Great Market Hall Budapest

The Great Market Hall (Nagycsarnok), also called the Central Market Hall, is the biggest and oldest covered market in Budapest, Hungary, at Vámház körút 1-3, at the south end of Váci Street. It is open Monday to Friday 6:00-18:00, Saturday 6:00-16:00 and Sunday 10:00-16:00, it is closed on public holidays and entry is free (official information, October 2026).

Where do you want to start

We went on our Budapest trip: paprika, cured meats and souvenirs downstairs, food counters upstairs, and prices clearly lower than on Váci Street. If you buy paprika or souvenirs in Budapest, buy them here.

Is the Great Market Hall in Budapest, Hungary worth it?

Yes. It opened in 1897 and is still a working market where locals shop, not only a sight. Honestly, it is one of the biggest markets we have ever seen. Walk the ground floor first, then take the stairs to the gallery: from up there you see the whole iron-and-glass hall at once.

Plan about an hour. If you are walking Váci Street anyway, the market is at its southern end, so it fits easily into a day in central Pest.

Central Market Hall Budapest food: eating upstairs

The places to eat are on the upper floor. The market operator lists nine of them among its 208 shops (official information, October 2026). When we walked past, the counters had ready Hungarian food on display, sausages and filled flatbreads among it, with bar stools along the gallery.

We did not eat here, so we are not going to rate the food. Where we did eat goulash and lángos in Budapest, and what we paid, is in our what to eat in Budapest  guide.

What to buy at the Great Market Hall: paprika and souvenirs

  • Ground floor: fruit and vegetables, cured meats and sausages, and paprika in every form, ground, in tins and in strings.
  • Upper gallery: souvenir and handicraft stalls, the place for magnets, embroidery and paprika gift packs.
  • Hungarikum utca: a section the operator set up to show quality Hungarian products you can buy in the hall (official information, October 2026).
On Váci Street the big souvenir shop asked 17.50 euros for a small handmade figurine; prices in the market were clearly lower. Our advice: look on Váci Street if you like, buy here.

Great Market Hall shopping list: what Hungary is famous for

  • Winter salamiPick from Szeged and Herz from Budapest; Visit Hungary lists both as Hungarikums, Hungary's officially recognised national products. Look for the white mould coating. You will find them at the butchers on the ground floor.
  • PaprikaGround sweet (édes) or hot (csípős), from the two paprika regions, Kalocsa and Szeged; in tins, bags, gift sets and dried strings. Tins travel best.
  • Goose liverLibamáj, in tins and jars at the deli counters; one of Hungary's best-known gourmet products and an easy gift because it keeps.
  • Tokaji, pálinka and UnicumTokaji is the sweet wine from the Tokaj region, pálinka the fruit brandy, Unicum the herbal bitter Zwack has made since the 18th century (Visit Hungary). Put bottles in your hold luggage.
  • Honey and jamsAcacia honey is the classic Hungarian one.
  • Embroidery and handicraftsKalocsa and Matyó patterns, on tablecloths, blouses and bags, at the stalls on the upper gallery.
  • Magnets and small souvenirsUpper gallery; compare prices between a few stalls before you buy.

Flying home? Many countries limit meat and dairy you can bring in from abroad, so check your own customs rules before you buy salami or goose liver. At most airports bottles over 100 ml still have to go in checked luggage.
