Slovak is read the way it is written, and once you know a handful of letters it stops looking scary. č sounds like English ch, š like sh and ž like the s in pleasure. c is always ts, so ulica (street) is "OO-lee-tsah". An accent mark (á, í, ú, é) makes the vowel long; ä is usually said like e, and ô like "wo". ľ, ď, ť and ň are soft, a bit like ly, dy, ty and ny, and ch is the throaty sound in Scottish loch.
