The biggest and best known Christmas market in Vienna. You walk in under a huge arch of lights; behind it stands the fully lit City Hall (Rathaus), in the middle a giant Christmas tree and dozens of wooden stalls. Deeper into the park come heart shaped lights, the Herzerlbaum (heart tree), photo spots and small trains for children.

On 24 December it is open 10:00-18:30. The ice rink is open 13 November 2026 to 6 January 2027, 10:00-22:00; on 24 December 10:00-18:30, closed on 31 December. When the rink closes, the bigger Wiener Eistraum takes over the square: 22 January to 7 March 2027, 10:00-22:00. U3 Volkstheater is also close (official info, October 2026).

Watch in the video · 8:54  Ice skating is part of this Vienna Christmas market: the square in front of City Hall turns into an ice rink, with ice paths winding between the trees, and you can rent skates on site. It was the biggest ice rink we have ever seen.

Our experience: we came on a Saturday evening. The market is huge, but it felt modern and crowded to us; we felt the old Christmas atmosphere more in Dresden. Watch in the video · 10:44  We also rode the Ferris wheel inside the market: a nice view, but the trees hide part of the market.

Watch in the video · 1:03:37  On the U-Bahn we followed the U2 signs and walked the wrong way for a while; when you change lines, go by the station name, not the line sign.

Where to Stay for the Vienna Christmas Markets

Twin room at the Mercure Grand Hotel Biedermeier Wien, Vienna

Most markets are in the Innere Stadt (1st district): Rathausplatz, Stephansplatz, Am Hof, Freyung and Maria-Theresien-Platz are all within walking distance of each other. The centre fills up early at Christmas; on Saturday nights in December the number of hotels still available drops to about half of the same night in January.

Spittelberg is in Neubau (7th district), Belvedere in Landstraße (3rd) and the Prater market in Leopoldstadt (2nd). Our area by area picks, with a section on staying in Vienna at Christmas, are in our where to stay in Vienna guide .

Closest to the markets: Innere Stadt is the most expensive area and the first to fill up, but you can walk back to the hotel late at night.

How Many Days for the Vienna Christmas Markets?

1 day: Freyung and Am Hof in the afternoon, Stephansplatz at dusk, then Rathausplatz and the ice rink in the evening. All in the old town, on foot.

2 to 3 days: on day two, Schönbrunn Palace and its market, then Spittelberg in the evening; on day three, Belvedere, Karlsplatz and the Prater. With a week, add Prague or Budapest by train: their Christmas markets are open in the same weeks.

Our own Christmas trip was Prague, Dresden and Vienna. Hallstatt , the lakeside village, also works as a day trip from Vienna.

How to Get to the Vienna Christmas Markets: Flights, Trains and the U-Bahn

Train to Vienna at the platform in Prague main station

By plane: you arrive at Vienna International Airport (VIE). The main S-Bahn line from the airport to the centre is closed from 7 September 2026 to 31 October 2027; during the closure the City Airport Train (CAT) runs as a bus between Terminal 3 and Wien Mitte, €14.90 one way, and the fastest way in is the Railjet to Hauptbahnhof in about 15 minutes (official info, October 2026).

By train from Prague: Watch in the video · 0:40  Vienna was the third stop of our Christmas market trip. We took the train from Prague with a change in Břeclav; the trip took about 4 hours and we only waited a few minutes for the connection. The ticket with a change was cheaper than the direct train. From Budapest, the Railjet takes about 2 hours 40 minutes.

Getting around: Watch in the video · 1:44  Our hotel was a little outside the centre, so we bought a 24-hour public transport ticket and used the U-Bahn between the markets. The 48 and 72-hour tickets are no longer sold; the 24-hour ticket costs €9.70 in the app and €10.20 as a paper ticket from the machines (official info, October 2026).

What to Eat and Drink at the Vienna Christmas Markets

Trdelnik stall at a Vienna Christmas market, dough on spits rolled in sugar

The stall classics are roasted chestnuts, candied almonds, langos and sausages; for dessert, waffles, strudel and Kaiserschmarrn sell the most. For children there is alcohol-free Kinderpunsch. The typical Vienna market scene: a mug of hot punch in one hand and a snack in the other, wandering under the lights.

Hot drinks come in a Vienna Christmas market mug with a deposit; bring the mug back and you get the deposit back. The amount is posted at each stall.

Vienna Christmas Market Tips: Know Before You Go

Which day to go? We went to Rathausplatz on a Saturday evening and it was packed. For a calmer visit go on a weekday afternoon, and arrive just before dark to see the lights come on; in December it gets dark around 16:00.

Crowds and pickpockets: Rathausplatz and Stephansplatz are very busy in the evenings. Keep your phone and wallet in a front pocket and leave the big backpack at the hotel.

Public holidays: 8, 25 and 26 December are public holidays in Austria. Most markets are open, with different hours, but shops and some museums close.

Do I need a visa for Vienna? Austria is in the Schengen Area, and whether you need a visa depends on your passport; see our Austria visa guide . Prague, Bratislava and Budapest are in the same area, but carry your passport on trains, as ID checks can happen.

Vienna Christmas markets: your questions

When do the Vienna Christmas markets 2026 start and end?

The Vienna Christmas markets 2026 start on 6 November and the last ones close on 6 January 2027 (official info, October 2026). Stephansplatz and Schönbrunn open first; the biggest, Rathausplatz, is open from 13 November to 26 December. If you travel in January, Schönbrunn and the Prater market are still open.

When are all the Vienna Christmas markets open at the same time?

Between 20 November and 23 December 2026 all 13 big markets are open. They open in stages: 6 November Stephansplatz and Schönbrunn; 13 November Rathausplatz, Spittelberg, Karlsplatz, Am Hof, Schwarzenbergplatz, the University Campus and Türkenschanzpark; 14 November Freyung; 20 November Belvedere, Maria-Theresien-Platz and the Prater (official info, October 2026).

Where is the main Vienna Christmas market?

The main and biggest Vienna Christmas market is the Wiener Christkindlmarkt on Rathausplatz, in front of City Hall in the 1st district (U2 Rathaus). Next to it is the biggest ice rink we have ever seen, and there is a Ferris wheel. We went on a Saturday evening and it was very crowded; for a calmer visit choose a weekday afternoon.

Is the Vienna Christmas market worth it?

Yes, for the size and the lights, but set your expectations: Rathausplatz felt modern and crowded to us, and we felt the old Christmas atmosphere more at the Striezelmarkt in Dresden. For a more traditional feel in Vienna, add the smaller crafts markets at Spittelberg, Am Hof and Freyung.

How many days do you need for the Vienna Christmas markets?

Two days are enough. On day one walk Freyung, Am Hof and Stephansplatz in the old town and keep the evening for the lights of Rathausplatz; on day two go to Schönbrunn, Belvedere and Spittelberg. See Stephansplatz before 21:00 (official info, October 2026): we arrived at 21:30 and it had closed.

Are the Vienna Christmas markets open on 24, 25 and 26 December?

Yes, seven markets are open on 24, 25 and 26 December, but all of them close early on the 24th. On 24 December Stephansplatz, Schönbrunn, Maria-Theresien-Platz and Schwarzenbergplatz close at 16:00, Belvedere and the Prater at 17:00 and Rathausplatz at 18:30. On 25 and 26 December Rathausplatz is open 10:00-22:00, Stephansplatz 11:00-19:00, Schönbrunn 10:00-19:00, Belvedere 10:00-21:00, the Prater 11:00-22:00, Maria-Theresien-Platz and Schwarzenbergplatz 11:00-16:00 (official info, October 2026).

Spittelberg, Karlsplatz, Am Hof, Freyung, the University Campus and Türkenschanzpark close on 23 December, so see them before Christmas.

Are any Vienna Christmas markets open after New Year?

Yes, the Schönbrunn Palace market and the Prater winter market are open until 6 January 2027 (official info, October 2026). The Rathausplatz ice rink is also open until 6 January, and from 22 January to 7 March 2027 the Wiener Eistraum fills the same square, so you can still skate in January.

What is there to do in Vienna on New Year's Eve?

Vienna celebrates New Year's Eve on the Silvesterpfad in the old town: on 31 December 2026 it runs from 14:00 until 02:00, with food stalls opening at 11:00 (official info, October 2026).

The Prater winter market is also open until 02:00 that night. The next morning, 1 January 2027 at 11:15, the Vienna Philharmonic plays the New Year's Concert at the Musikverein; tickets were allocated by lottery in February.

Where should I stay for the Vienna Christmas markets?

The Innere Stadt (1st district) is closest: Rathausplatz, Stephansplatz, Am Hof, Freyung and Maria-Theresien-Platz are within walking distance. For lower prices look at Neubau and Mariahilf, where Spittelberg is.

The centre fills up early at Christmas; when we couldn't find a room we stayed at the Mercure Grand Hotel Biedermeier Wien in Landstraße and walked 5 minutes to the U4 Landstraße station. Area by area picks are in our where to stay in Vienna guide .

How do I get from the airport to the Christmas markets?

Vienna International Airport (VIE) is the arrival point. The main S-Bahn line to the centre is closed until 31 October 2027; in the meantime the CAT runs as a bus to Wien Mitte, and the Railjet reaches Hauptbahnhof in about 15 minutes (official info, October 2026).

Between the markets, use the U-Bahn: we bought a 24-hour ticket, €9.70 in the app (official info, October 2026).
