Things to Do in Vienna: Palaces, Tickets, Hours

16 stops6 free stopsWith mapThings to do

The top things to do in Vienna are Schönbrunn Palace, the Hofburg, the Belvedere, St. Stephen's Cathedral and the Prater; on both our trips these were the top places to visit in Vienna. The old town sights are within walking distance; Schönbrunn, the Danube Tower and Kahlenberg are outside the centre.

Our Vienna Pass covered most of these great things to do in Vienna. Each card has tickets, hours, our tips and the moment in our video, so you can pick the best things to do in Vienna, Austria for your days.

We moved quickly through the palace, the gardens, the zoo, the imperial carriage collection and the maze, and it still took us 5 hours. The Schönbrunn Palace gardens are too big to cover on foot, so we took the little garden train.

We watched the city from the panorama terrace and saw an apple strudel show; the train, the terrace and the show were all included in our Vienna Pass.

More about this stop

If you have a Vienna Pass, don't join the entry queue: you first have to scan the pass at the ticket desk to get your palace ticket. We were sent back from the gate to the desk.

Schönbrunn Palace tickets have new names: the State Apartments ticket (selected rooms) is €30 and the Palace Ticket, covering the whole main floor, is €42. The Classic Pass (€49), covering the palace, gardens, maze and the Gloriette terrace, is only on sale until 2 November 2026, and the published Gloriette terrace hours also end that day.

From 3 November 2026 to 31 March 2027 the palace is open daily 8:30-17:00 with timed tickets. The zoo is €29 for adults (official info, 19 October 2026). If you also want the Sisi Museum at the Hofburg, the Sisi Pass (€60) includes the Palace Ticket; see the Hofburg card (official info, 21 October 2026).

The Habsburgs' winter palace is huge. We rushed through parts of it; we'd recommend setting aside a whole day just for the Hofburg. The lockers inside take a €1 or €2 coin, which you get back when you leave, so carry some change.

The Sisi Museum is being redesigned and reopens in its new form on 19 November 2026. Until then only the Imperial Apartments are open, at a reduced adult price of €15; the new day-ticket price hasn't been published yet.

The Imperial Treasury (Schatzkammer) is €16 online and €18 at the door, open 9:00-17:30 every day except Tuesday, and since 1 April 2026 entry is by timed reservation only (official info, 19 October 2026).

Sisi Ticket or Sisi Pass: the official combined ticket is called the Sisi Pass. It covers the Schönbrunn Palace Ticket (the whole main floor), the Sisi Museum with the Imperial Apartments at the Hofburg and the Vienna Furniture Museum for €60, children from 6 €38.

Until 18 November the Sisi Museum is open daily 10:00-16:30, last entry 16:00; with a Vienna City Card the reduced ticket is €13.50 instead of €15 (official info, 21 October 2026).

We had breakfast at the Palmenhaus, the glasshouse in the Burggarten right next to the palace.

Stephansdom stands in the middle of the old town. We saw the free part by the entrance; the towers, the catacombs and the guided tour need separate tickets. The story told here is that during the second siege of Vienna in 1683, people gathered in the cathedral and the Ottoman army was watched from the tower.

On the side of the church there is a statue that, we were told, symbolises the victory over the Ottomans; we show this corner in the video. We're not historians, we're passing on what we were told there.

  • Towers: daily 9:00-19:00

Tickets for St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna, catacombs included (official info, 19 October 2026): the cathedral tour, the North Tower (with lift), the South Tower (343 steps) and the catacombs tour are €8 each; the All-Inclusive ticket covering the cathedral, one catacombs tour, both towers and the Teutonic Order treasury is €29 and valid for a year.

Tourist visiting hours are Monday to Saturday 9:00-11:30 and 13:00-16:30, Sunday 13:00-16:30, and can change during services. Large suitcases aren't allowed and there is no left luggage.

On our Christmas trip we came at 21:30 to see the Christmas market in front of the cathedral; the sign said 22:00, but it had already closed. If you're going in the evening, come early.

The Riesenrad, the Giant Ferris Wheel, was built for the 50th anniversary of Emperor Franz Joseph's accession. We went at night; the cabins stop often, which felt a bit slow, and in the dark there wasn't much of a view.

Go in daylight. For fun things to do in Vienna with children, this is the place. We skipped the roller coaster because there was nowhere to leave our bag, so come without one.

The Prunksaal, or State Hall, is an 18th-century baroque hall in the Josefsplatz wing of the Hofburg, with ceiling frescoes and wooden shelves rising to the ceiling. We also saw the library of Melk Abbey in the Wachau, and we think this hall is far more beautiful.

We came on our Christmas trip while the Christmas market was set up on the Rathausplatz in front of it; we didn't go inside the building. The square was very big and very crowded, and it felt a little too modern for us; it didn't have the atmosphere of the market in Dresden.

The ice rink in front of the building was the biggest we have ever seen. If you are in Vienna in December, these are the Christmas things to do we would pick: this market, the one in front of St.

Stephen's and the Anker Clock's 17:00 Advent parade. Most Vienna attractions stay open in winter, just with shorter hours; Schönbrunn, for example, is open 8:30-17:00 from 3 November.

The inside can be seen on a free guided tour on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 13:00, in German, with online registration; there are no tours on session days, public holidays or from 24 to 31 December. A free audio guide is available in other languages.

The Christmas market at Vienna City Hall, the Wiener Christkindlmarkt, runs from 13 November to 26 December, daily 10:00-22:00 (official info, 19 October 2026). Dates and hours of the other markets are in our Vienna Christmas markets guide .

On our first trip to Vienna we left this for the end and never filmed it, so on our Christmas trip it was our first stop. Stalls of fresh vegetables, fruit and deli food run one after another, with places in between where you can sit down and try something; give it a couple of hours.

We tried Nusszelten, a walnut pastry: not bad, and it would have gone well with a cup of tea. Everyone was eating the sausages, cooked whole and served with cheese on top, pickles and bread. Austrian sausages are usually pork, so ask before you buy.

Vienna Naschmarkt hours: the stalls are open Monday to Friday 6:00-21:00 and Saturday 6:00-18:00, closed on Sunday. On Saturdays a flea market sets up on the Kettenbrücke side from 6:30 to 15:00 (official info, 19 October 2026).

The view from the top of the tower was really good. The real surprise is the glass slide that winds around the outside: we paid an extra €5 each and went down it.

For safety reasons they don't let you film on the slide. Getting back to the centre from the tower is a bit of a hassle; we called an Uber. Still, for us it was one of the most unique things to do in Vienna.

Things to do in Vienna: frequently asked questions

What are the top things to do in Vienna?

Schönbrunn Palace, the Hofburg, the Belvedere, St. Stephen's Cathedral, the Kunsthistorisches Museum, the Prater and its Giant Ferris Wheel, the State Hall of the Austrian National Library, City Hall, the Naschmarkt, the Danube Tower, the Natural History Museum, Kahlenberg, the Anker Clock and the Plague Column on the Graben.

We visited all of these ourselves. The State Opera is on the list too, but we didn't go inside.

What are the free things to do in Vienna?

The Graben and the Plague Column, the Anker Clock's noon figure parade, the Prater park itself, Schönbrunn's park and the view from Kahlenberg are free. The guided tour of City Hall is free too, with online registration (official info, 19 October 2026).

Is the Vienna Pass worth it?

We bought one and it paid off for us: the canal cruise, the train and terrace at Schönbrunn and many museums were included. If you plan to see a lot quickly it pays off; for only a few sights, single tickets may be cheaper. According to official information, Schönbrunn Palace, the Kunsthistorisches Museum, the Natural History Museum, the Giant Ferris Wheel and the State Hall of the National Library are included.

Public transport is not included, but it can be added. Check current prices before you buy (official info, 19 October 2026).

Vienna City Card or Vienna Pass: what is the difference?

The Vienna Pass is an attractions pass: entry to the sights is included. The Vienna City Card covers public transport and gives discounts at museums rather than free entry; for example the State Hall of the National Library is €10.50 instead of €12 and the Sisi Museum €13.50 instead of €15 (official info, 21 October 2026).

If you will visit many sights, the Pass is the one we would choose; if you mostly want transport plus a few museums, the City Card.

What is the Sisi Ticket?

The official combined ticket is called the Sisi Pass: the Schönbrunn Palace Ticket, the Sisi Museum with the Imperial Apartments at the Hofburg and the Vienna Furniture Museum on one ticket, €60 for adults and €38 for children from 6. The redesigned Sisi Museum reopens with extra rooms on 19 November 2026 (official info, 21 October 2026).

How much are Schönbrunn Palace tickets and what are the opening hours?

State Apartments €30, and the Palace Ticket covering the whole main floor €42. The Classic Pass (€49) is only on sale until 2 November 2026. The park is free. In winter (3 November 2026 to 31 March 2027) the palace is open daily 8:30-17:00 (official info, 19 October 2026).

Are Vienna's museums closed on Mondays?

Not all of them. The Kunsthistorisches Museum is now open every day. The Natural History Museum and the Imperial Treasury close on Tuesdays. The State Hall of the National Library closes on Mondays from October to May (official info, 19 October 2026).

Do I need to book Kunsthistorisches Museum tickets in advance?

Yes. Since 8 September 2026 entry is by timed ticket only; €22 online, €24 at the door (official info, 19 October 2026). The Belvedere, Schönbrunn and the Imperial Treasury also require timed tickets.

How much is a public transport ticket in Vienna?

A single ticket is €3.20 (€3.00 digital), a 24-hour ticket €10.20 (€9.70 digital) and a 7-day ticket €28.90. The 48- and 72-hour tickets were withdrawn on 1 January 2026 (official info, 19 October 2026).

Can you visit Vienna City Hall?

Yes, on a free guided tour on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 13:00, in German, with online registration. A free audio guide is available in other languages (official info, 19 October 2026).
