What to Eat in Budapest: Lángos, Goulash

12 placesWith mapWhere to eat

Hungarian food to try in Budapest: goulash, lángos, chimney cake (kürtőskalács) and chicken paprikash. We ate our way through five days and twelve places: goulash at Rosenstein and New York Café, lángos and chimney cake at Molnár's on Váci Street, Italian at Trattoria Pomo D'Oro, cake at Gerbeaud, burgers in the Jewish Quarter and three breakfasts.

Budapest food felt good value to us after Scandinavia. Each card below has the moment in our video, what we ordered and where to stay nearby.

New York Café

Called the Most Beautiful Café in the World

CafésDistrict VII
What to order
goulash soup, cakes
Address
Erzsébet körút 9-11, District VII

Its 19th-century gilded interior is why it gets called the most beautiful café in the world; it was built as the ground floor of an insurance company's palace. The writer Ferenc Molnár is said to have thrown the key into the Danube so it could never close, and a tiny bronze statue of someone fishing that key out sits in the side street.

More about this place

We ordered the goulash soup and the house chicken dish, then cakes. Everything was very good, and the waiter who looked after us was lovely. It is a genuine recommendation from us: the room and the food were both worth it.

Our notes on the menu, booking and the queue are in our full guide: New York Café Budapest .

lángos, cinnamon chimney cake

Váci Street

We liked the lángos here more than our first one. Next to it, chimney cake (kürtőskalács) turns over the coals. We had not found a good one at the Prague Christmas markets, so in its homeland we tried almond first, then came back one evening for pistachio and cinnamon.

More about this place

Because we found the best one here, we did not try anywhere else. For us cinnamon wins; there are pistachio and chocolate versions too.

Goulash and a Hungarian Starter Platter

RestaurantsDistrict VII
What to order
goulash, house salamis, beef tartare
Address
near Keleti station

We came here to try proper Hungarian cooking. The starter platter had the house spicy salamis, beef tartare, duck liver, crispy fried duck skin and an egg dish, with tomato, cucumber and onion. The beef tartare was the highlight.

We also tried pálinka, the local fruit brandy: not bad, but very strong, like a plum spirit. Then the goulash arrived, well spiced, with meat that fell apart and potato and carrot in the broth. If you want traditional Hungarian food in one sitting, this is a good address.

We came to try Hungary's local food. Lángos is basically deep-fried dough, served here with sour cream and cheese; today you can get every topping you can think of. We were surprised by the size of it.

More about this place

Alongside it we had a paprika meat dish, with a dumpling-like side. Both were good, though we liked the lángos at Molnár's more.

Vörösmarty tér

One of the city's most famous cafés. We ordered its best-known walnut layer cake; without the fondant-like topping it would have been much better. The interior is beautiful, so stop in while you are on the square.

The Italian Place We Went Back To

What to order
burrata, pizza, penne all'arrabbiata
Address
Arany János utca, District V

We had been before and came back on this trip because it is genuinely good. We ordered burrata, pizza and penne all'arrabbiata; the olive oils on the table were excellent and the arrabbiata was not as fiery as we feared.

The staff are attentive but slow: our mains took an hour. Our dish-by-dish notes are in Trattoria Pomo D'Oro Budapest .

Street Food in the Jewish Quarter

Street foodDistrict VII
What to order
lángos burger
Address
Jewish Quarter

A courtyard packed with food trucks, from burgers and fried chicken to chimney cake, lángos and Mexican, with drinks stalls too. They had a lángos burger, so we ordered it: a burger in fried dough instead of a bun, and it was good.

More about this place

We had a small bite here and moved on; if you are in a group, everyone can pick their own stall.

The Queue Is Always There

The most talked-about burger in town, with a long queue outside every time. They smash the patty so the edges come out crispy, and the sauce tastes a lot like Big Mac sauce; it is very saucy. We liked it.

Our first breakfast in Budapest. We ordered two breakfast plates and pancakes; the plates were generous and the eggs were cooked exactly right. After a trip round Scandinavia, the prices felt very reasonable.

On our last morning we did not want to go far; people told us the breakfasts here were famous, and it was very close to our apartment. We had an avocado bagel and a beef burger, both good. Our second best breakfast in Budapest, after Blueberry.

It was right by our apartment; we saw it and walked in, and every surface is covered in plants. We had a quinoa salad one evening and came back for breakfast another morning, with an omelette and avocado toast.

The menu is short, but we loved the atmosphere. Photos come out better in the morning light, and it is a good spot for a quiet evening.

We had spotted the queue on the way to Blueberry and put it on our list. The breakfast did not suit our taste; Blueberry is much better for that. The giant cookies were good, though; ours came cold, so ask for yours warmed.

Hungarian Food

What We Tried and What We Did Not

The Hungarian food we tried. Goulash twice: a richly spiced one with meat that fell apart at Rosenstein, and goulash soup at New York Café. Lángos twice, and we preferred the one at Molnár's; at Karaván we had a lángos burger.

Chimney cake in almond, pistachio and cinnamon at Molnár's, and cinnamon was our favourite. At Rosenstein we had a starter platter with house salamis, beef tartare and duck liver, plus a glass of pálinka, the local fruit brandy, and at Gerbeaud a walnut layer cake.

  • Goulash
  • Lángos
  • Chimney cake

What we did not try this time: halászlé (fisherman's soup) and töltött káposzta (stuffed cabbage). We do not write about food we have not eaten.

Lángos, Goulash and Food Prices in Budapest

What is the most famous food in Budapest?

Goulash (gulyás), the paprika beef soup-stew; lángos, deep-fried dough with sour cream and cheese; chimney cake (kürtőskalács); and chicken paprikash. We tried the first three in several places.

What is lángos?

Deep-fried dough, usually topped with sour cream and grated cheese. Today you will find every topping, even kebab. Our favourite was at Molnár's on Váci Street.

Where can I eat goulash in Budapest?

We had it at Rosenstein, a traditional Hungarian restaurant near Keleti station, and as goulash soup at New York Café. Both were good; Rosenstein's was the spicier, heartier one.

Is food expensive in Budapest?

After Scandinavia it felt good value to us: full breakfast plates and generous portions. Tourist streets like Váci are pricier, so eat one street back.

Where to have breakfast in Budapest?

Our best was Blueberry, second was Stika; Twentysix is the prettiest room. We did not like the breakfast at Cookie Beacon, but the giant cookies are good.
