Budapest
Capital, 5 districts. We stayed in an apartment on Király utca in District VII and walked to the Opera and Gozsdu Udvar.
Budapest: hotels area by area
Where to stay in Hungary, in short: base yourself in Budapest on a first trip, do Szentendre and Esztergom as day trips, and give Lake Balaton and Eger a night each. We spent five nights in an apartment in Budapest's District VII. Below are the most booked Hungary hotels, region by region. See Hungary hotels Ad
Capital, 5 districts. We stayed in an apartment on Király utca in District VII and walked to the Opera and Gozsdu Udvar.
Budapest: hotels area by areaWe split the Hungarian towns outside Budapest into five regions. Every card below holds three well rated hotels from that place's most booked ranking on Booking and a link to all of its hotels. Times are from Budapest, approximate, and vary by service (MÁV, October 2026).
Siófok, Balatonfüred and Keszthely
Hungary's summer lake. Siófok on the south shore is known for its beaches and crowds, Balatonfüred on the north shore for a calmer promenade and the wineries around it; Keszthely at the western end has the Festetics Palace, and Hévíz a few kilometres away has its thermal lake.
Keszthely is about 2.5 hours by train, Hévíz close to 3 hours by bus (MÁV, October 2026). Tihany sits on a peninsula on the north shore; for Siófok, Keszthely and Tihany hotels around Hungary's big lake, the link below opens every hotel on Balaton.
Best for: A summer lake holiday; the thermal lake at Hévíz
From Budapest: Siófok: about 1 hour 20 minutes by train; Keszthely: 2.5 hours
Good to know: pick your shore first; the lake is big, and Siófok to Keszthely takes more than an hour by train.

The stretch north of Budapest where the Danube bends and turns south. Szentendre is known as an artists' town with the Skanzen open air museum, Visegrád for its hilltop castle, and Esztergom for its basilica, the largest church in Hungary.
All three are close enough for a day trip; stay a night if you want them quiet in the evening. Hotels in Visegrád (Visegrad), Hungary sit below the castle along the river; the link below opens the whole Danube Bend list.
Best for: A quiet small town close to Budapest, a castle and a basilica
From Budapest: Szentendre: about 40 minutes by HÉV; Esztergom: 1 hour by train

A small baroque town under its castle, walkable end to end, with thermal baths near the centre. Eger is also one of Hungary's best known wine towns: the Valley of the Beautiful Women (Szépasszony-völgy) is lined with cellars where you can taste Egri Bikavér, or Bull's Blood.
The round trip is four hours on the train, so a night makes more sense than a day trip (MÁV, October 2026).
Best for: A castle, a baroque centre, thermal baths and wine cellars
From Budapest: About 2 hours by train

A university city in the east; the Great Reformed Church on the main square is its landmark. It is also the nearest big city to Hortobágy National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is far for a day trip from Budapest; if you are heading east, it is a place for a night or two (MÁV, October 2026).
Best for: Eastern Hungary and Hortobágy National Park
From Budapest: About 2 hours 45 minutes by train
Debrecen
Booking: 9.3 (1,760 reviews).Western Hungary
A baroque old town where rivers meet, right on the line between Vienna and Budapest. If you are travelling between the two capitals by train and want to break the journey, Győr is an easy stop for one night (MÁV, October 2026). The Győr (Gyor) hotels in Hungary we list below come from Booking's most booked ranking for the town.
Best for: Breaking a Vienna to Budapest train trip
From Budapest: About 1 hour 10 minutes by train
Győr
Booking: 8.7 (3,514 reviews). On a first trip, Budapest. The airport is there, the city easily fills three days, and the trains to the other regions leave from Budapest stations. We stayed in Budapest too: five nights in a Király utca apartment, in District VII. Our Budapest page compares Districts V, VI, VII, XIII and Buda Castle: where to stay in Budapest .
Szentendre is about 40 minutes on the HÉV suburban train from Batthyány tér, and Esztergom about 1 hour by train from Nyugati station; both are easy day trips. Siófok, the nearest Lake Balaton town, is 1 hour 20 minutes by train.
Eger takes about 2 hours: it works as a day trip, but the castle, the baths and the wine cellars are easier with a night there (MÁV, BKK, October 2026).
It depends a lot on season, day and place. In Budapest, District V is the priciest and District XIII is usually the cheapest; district by district advice is in our Budapest accommodation guide . We have not checked prices outside Budapest; under each region card is a link that shows that place's hotels priced for your dates.
Station: trains to each region leave from a different Budapest station: Déli for Lake Balaton, Keleti for Eger, Nyugati for Esztergom and Debrecen, Kelenföld for Győr (MÁV, October 2026). If you plan several trips, a Budapest hotel near one of these stations saves time. No train: there is no railway to Hévíz or Visegrád; Hévíz is reached by bus, Visegrád by bus or by ferry from the opposite bank. Wellness: for hotels with wellness in the name, pool and sauna hours and any extra fee are on the hotel's Booking page; check before you book.
We only slept in Budapest. From Siófok to Debrecen we opened each town's most booked ranking on Booking and kept hotels with strong scores and long review records; the 15 on this page score between 8.7 and 9.5. Hungarian hotel scores drift over time, so recheck the score and the price on the Booking page before booking.
