Do You Need a Visa for South Korea? The Quick Answer by Nationality
- Path 1: exempt until 31 Dec 2026
- Path 2: K-ETA before you fly
- Path 3: visa from an embassy
Whether you need a South Korea visa depends only on the nationality in your passport, not on where you live or fly from. Short tourist trips fall into one of three paths:
| Your passport | What you need for a short tourist trip | Stay per visit |
|---|---|---|
| 22 countries and regions on the temporary exemption list: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Macao, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan, United Kingdom (British citizens), United States | No visa and no K-ETA until 31 December 2026 (Korean time). You fill in an arrival card instead. | 90 days for most; 3 months for Belgium, Netherlands, New Zealand; 6 months for Canada |
| Other visa-free countries on the K-ETA list, for example Ireland, Portugal, Greece, Czechia, Israel, Türkiye, UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Thailand, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, South Africa | No visa, but a K-ETA (Korea Electronic Travel Authorization) approved before you board. | 30 days to 6 months, depending on nationality |
| Every nationality not on the K-ETA list, for example China, India, Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam, Mongolia, Pakistan, Nigeria | A visa from a Korean embassy or consulate, such as the C-3-9 short-term tourism visa. Special rules exist for Jeju direct flights, transit and some group tours. | Set by the visa (C-3-9: up to 90 days) |
In short, there is currently no South Korea visa for US citizens on holiday, and none for UK, Canadian or Australian travellers either; they also need no K-ETA. Travellers aged 17 or under, or 65 or over, are also K-ETA exempt, whatever their visa-free nationality. The full country table is in the next section.

South Korea Visa Requirements by Country: Full Table
- 22 exempt countries/regions
- 116 lines on the K-ETA list
- Everyone else: visa
These are the South Korea visa requirements by country, taken from the official K-ETA eligibility list and the embassy notices on the temporary exemption. The K-ETA list has 116 lines because the United Kingdom is split into six passport types.
Together, the exempt list and the K-ETA list form the list of Korea visa-free countries for short trips; every other nationality needs a visa. "Stay" is the maximum visa-free stay per visit; a K-ETA never lets you stay longer than that.

How to Check Your Status on the Official K-ETA Site
- Free to check
- Official site: k-eta.go.kr
- Pop-up shows "K-ETA Exempt"
Not sure which K-ETA exempt countries list you are on? The official site tells you. Start a K-ETA application on www.k-eta.go.kr and scan the photo page of your passport. If your nationality is temporarily exempt, a "K-ETA Exempt" pop-up appears. The US and Guam notices say the pop-up appears when you select your nationality.
If you get the pop-up, you do not need to continue. If you see no pop-up and your country is on the K-ETA list, the K-ETA is required for you. If your nationality is not on the K-ETA eligible countries page, you need a visa.

What Is K-ETA? The Korea Electronic Travel Authorization Explained
- Not a visa
- Online only
- Needed before boarding
What is K-ETA? The Korea Electronic Travel Authorization (K-ETA, sometimes searched as "Korea ETA" or "South Korea ETA") is an online pre-screening for nationals who can enter Korea without a visa.
You apply for the K-ETA for South Korea online: you enter your passport and travel details, Korean immigration reviews them, and if you are approved you can board your flight or ship to Korea. Without it the airline will not let you board.
Many people call it the "K-ETA visa", but the official pages are clear: K-ETA is not a visa and it does not guarantee entry. The immigration officer at the airport or port makes the final decision.
It covers tourism, visiting relatives, events and meetings, and business without paid activity. It is valid for multiple entries during its validity, but each stay is still limited by your nationality's visa-free period.

K-ETA Application Step by Step: Fee, Processing Time, Validity
- Fee: ₩10,000 + about 3%
- Usually within 72 hours
- Valid 3 years
The K-ETA application is done in English on the official K-ETA website, www.k-eta.go.kr, or in the official K-ETA app (Google Play and App Store). There are no official agents. A K-ETA application for US citizens is optional until 31 December 2026: they are exempt, but may apply to skip the arrival card.
Before you start
The K-ETA requirements are simple. Have ready: a valid passport, a working email address, a face photo and a credit or debit card that is open for overseas payments. The photo must be a colour JPG under 20 MB showing your full face, with no hat, scarf or sunglasses; a religious head covering is fine if your face is fully visible.
The steps
- 1Open www.k-eta.go.kr or the K-ETA app yourself; do not click an ad or a look-alike site.
- 2Scan the photo page of your passport. Exempt nationals see the "K-ETA Exempt" pop-up here.
- 3Fill in your personal and travel details in English (the form is shown in 10 languages). Up to 9 companions can be added without an account.
- 4Check everything before you submit: you cannot edit the application afterwards.
- 5Pay ₩10,000 per person plus an online payment fee of about 3% (Visa, Mastercard, JCB, AMEX, Diners Club, Discover, UnionPay, Alipay+).
- 6Wait for the result, usually within 72 hours, then check it on the site or app.
- 7If your entry dates, address, flight or companions change later, use "Update Travel Information".
Fee, processing time and validity
| Item | Official rule |
|---|---|
| Fee | ₩10,000 per person (about USD 7 to 8) plus about 3% online payment fee; not refunded whatever the result |
| Processing time | Usually within 72 hours, sometimes longer; no express service |
| When to apply | Before boarding. A 2022 official notice recommends applying 1 to 2 months before your trip |
| Validity | 3 years from approval, or until your passport expires if that is sooner |
| Entries | Multiple, each stay limited by your visa-free period |
| Reapply when | New passport, or a change in name, nationality, sex, date of birth, passport number or expiry |
| If refused | No reason is given; to travel, apply for a visa at a Korean embassy or consulate (see "Korean Visa Denied or K-ETA Refused" below) |

K-ETA Exemptions: Under 17, 65 and Over, and Other Groups
- 17 and under: exempt
- 65 and over: exempt
- Arrival card still needed
Besides the temporary country exemption, these groups never need a K-ETA:
| Who | Rule |
|---|---|
| Visa-free nationals aged 17 or under, or 65 or over, on the day of entry | Exempt since 3 July 2023. If you turn 18 on your arrival day, you need a K-ETA. |
| Diplomatic and official passport holders | Exempt since 9 January 2023 |
| UN passport holders | Exempt |
| Holders of a valid Korean visa or Residence Card | Exempt; the visa or card status takes priority over a K-ETA |
| APEC Business Travel Card (ABTC) holders | Exempt only if "KOR" is printed on the card |
| On-duty aircraft crew and seafarers; cruise travellers | Exempt |
| US Forces Korea active-duty members (SOFA) | Exempt; dependants need a K-ETA unless they hold an A-3 visa or SOFA stamp |
| Transit passengers who stay in the airport | Exempt; you need a K-ETA if you have to pass through immigration, for example to collect your bags or because your itinerary changed |
| Korean citizens, including dual nationals with a valid Korean passport | Exempt |

Korea e-Arrival Card: Who Needs It, and K-ETA vs e-Arrival Card
- Free
- Up to 3 days before arrival
- Separate from K-ETA
The Korea e-Arrival Card (www.e-arrivalcard.go.kr) is the online version of the paper arrival card, with the same legal effect. It is free and has nothing to do with K-ETA approval. In other words, the South Korea e-Arrival Card is simply the Korea e-Arrival Card online, and it costs nothing.
For US citizens, who are K-ETA exempt until 31 December 2026, the South Korea e-Arrival Card is the form to fill in. If you are asking "do I need a K-ETA to enter Korea?", the answer depends on your passport: K-ETA-required nationals need one, while exempt travellers fill in an arrival card instead.
| K-ETA | e-Arrival Card | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Travel authorization before boarding | Arrival card for immigration |
| Cost | ₩10,000 + about 3% card fee | Free |
| When | Before you board | From 3 days before arrival (Korean time), or after landing before immigration |
| Valid for | 3 years, multiple entries | 72 hours after submitting, one entry |
| Who uses it | K-ETA-required nationals (optional for exempt ones) | Travellers without a K-ETA, such as exempt nationals, ages 17 and under or 65 and over, visa holders and diplomatic passport holders (residence card and group e-visa holders are excluded) |
In short: if you have a K-ETA, you skip the arrival card. If you are exempt or travel on a visa, you fill one in. On a phone you can submit for up to 9 people at once, on a computer up to 1,000; there is no app. If you did not submit it before your trip, you can still fill in an e-Arrival Card or a paper card before immigration.

Visa-Required Nationalities: C-3-9 Tourist Visa Basics
- Apply at a Korean embassy or consulate
- Up to 90 days
- Rules differ by mission
If your nationality is not on the K-ETA list, you need a visa for South Korea, and your South Korea visa application goes to a Korean embassy or consulate, not to the K-ETA site. This is the case, for example, for the South Korea visa for Indians and for Filipino tourists.
For a holiday the usual type is the C-3-9 short-term tourism visa. This is what most people mean by a South Korea tourist visa. The Korean visa requirements for it are set by the mission that handles your Korean visa application; the table below shows what the official mission pages say.
The Korea visa documents required by those pages are in the last row. You apply at the Korean embassy or consulate (or its visa application centre) responsible for where you live; the Korea Visa Portal (www.visa.go.kr) is linked from the official sites.
| Item | What official mission pages say |
|---|---|
| Stay | Up to 90 days (Vancouver consulate) |
| Entries | Single entry (valid 3 months); Singapore also issues double (6 months) and, at its discretion, multiple-entry visas (5 years) |
| Processing | About 14 business days in Vancouver, 8 working days in Singapore |
| Fee | Standard USD 40 for a single entry of up to 90 days; the actual amount varies by nationality and mission (fee tables in the next section) |
| Photo | South Korea visa photo requirements: 3.5 × 4.5 cm in natural colour, plus each mission's own rules; the K-ETA photo rules above apply only to K-ETA |
| Typical documents | Application form and photo; passport valid 6+ months and a copy; proof of legal residence if you are not a citizen of that country; employment letter, business registration or school letter; last 3 months of bank statements; travel plan; any invitation letter |

Korean Visa Application Form, Photo Size, Fee and Validity
- Form No. 17
- Photo 3.5 × 4.5 cm
- Standard fee from USD 40
Every Korean visa application starts with the same document: the Korean visa application form (Form No. 17). Korean embassies and consulates link it from their home pages under "Visa Application Form", and the Korea Visa Portal (www.visa.go.kr) lets you fill in the same form online as an e-Form.
Tourists use it too: the Philippine embassy's C-3-9 tourist checklist asks for Form No. 17 and says to print it on A4 paper.
Can you apply for a South Korea visa online?
Partly. You can fill in the e-Form on the portal, print it with its bar code and take it, with your passport, photo, fee and documents, to the Korean embassy or consulate (or its visa centre) for the country where you live. The portal's fully online e-Visa is listed only for certain categories, such as some professionals, invited business visitors, medical tourists and Chinese group tours; an ordinary tourist visa goes through a mission.
The Chennai consulate describes exactly this for Indian applicants: fill in and print the e-Form, then hand it in at the visa centre.
Korean visa photo size
The South Korea visa photo size is 3.5 × 4.5 cm in natural colour; every official page we checked gives the same size. Some missions add their own rules:
| Where | Photo rule |
|---|---|
| Korea Visa Portal | 3.5 × 4.5 cm, natural colour (also for the e-Form, as a digital photo) |
| Philippines | Front-facing, plain white background, taken within the last 6 months; no copies, selfies or edited photos |
| Melbourne | Printed photo only (no digital files), taken within the last 6 months |
| Vancouver | White background, taken within the last 6 months, with the date on the back |
South Korea visa cost
The Korea Visa Portal lists these standard fees. Missions may charge a different amount depending on nationality, reciprocity or agreements, and the fee is not refunded if the visa is refused.
| Visa | Standard fee |
|---|---|
| Single entry, stay of 90 days or less (the usual tourist visa) | USD 40 |
| Single entry, stay of 91 days or more | USD 60 |
| Double entry | USD 70 |
| Multiple entry | USD 90 |
What some missions charge for a short tourist visa:
| Mission | Short-stay single-entry fee | Date of the official page |
|---|---|---|
| Philippines (Filipino passports) | Free for stays of 59 days or less; PHP 2,000 for 60 to 90 days; plus PHP 900 visa centre fee | 6 Aug 2026 |
| India (Chennai consulate) | USD 40 / INR 3,400; express USD 70 / INR 5,950 | from 1 Jun 2025 |
| Sydney | A$60 for nationalities not listed separately; free for Filipino C-3 stays of 59 days or less | 1 Jan 2025 |
| Vancouver | CAD 54 for the C-3-9 (varies by nationality) | 12 Nov 2024 |
Korean visa validity
Validity and length of stay are two different things. The validity ends on the "final entry date", the last day you may enter Korea; after it the visa is void. The period of stay counts from the day you enter.
A single-entry visa lets you enter once before it expires (the tourist missions we checked issue it for 3 months), a double-entry visa twice within 6 months, and multiple-entry visas run for 1, 3 or 5 years. A C-3-9 tourist stay is up to 90 days.

Tourist visa documents for employees

| Document | Detail |
|---|---|
| Basic | Visa application form No. 17, 1 colour passport photo, original passport and a copy of the photo page, original bank certificate |
| Bank certificate | In your name, issued within 3 months, showing account name, number, type, opening date, current balance and 6-month average daily balance |
| Employment | Certificate of employment on company letterhead with position, salary, hire date, company address and the HR manager's phone and email (issued within 3 months), plus your ITR (BIR Form 2316 or 1701) |
| If you have them | Copies of visas and arrival stamps for OECD countries from the past 5 years; PRC or IBP card |
The embassy may ask for more documents during screening, and the processing period can be recalculated when you hand them in. The checklist names no minimum bank balance.
Simplified Korean visa requirements
From 1 January to 31 December 2026 the embassy waives the financial documents (bank certificate, bank statement and ITR) for the groups below. All other documents are still required.
| Who | What they submit instead |

Each of these routes also covers the holder's parents, spouse, minor children (and adult children who can prove they are students) and spouse's parents, who must show proof of the relationship.

Korea Visa for Indians: VFS Visa Centres, Fee and Reapplication Rule
- Apply through the Visa Portal and a KVAC
- USD 40 / INR 3,400 short-stay fee
- Three missions, split by state
India is not on the K-ETA list, so Indian passport holders need a visa for a holiday in Korea, usually the C-3-9 (the Jeju direct-flight and transit exceptions aside).
The Korean Consulate General in Chennai states that Indian nationals must apply for and obtain the visa through the Korea Visa Portal and a Korean Visa Application Centre (KVAC) run by VFS Global. The steps:
- 1Check the visa type and its document list (the consulate points to the KVAC's visa-type page)
- 2Fill in the e-Form on www.visa.go.kr and print it
- 3Hand it in with your documents at the KVAC (VFS Global) for your state; incomplete applications are not accepted at the counter
- 4Check the status on the Korea Visa Portal

If someone in Korea invites you, the New Delhi page asks for the invitation letter and the inviting company's business registration (or the inviter's employee certificate), and from you a business registration or employee certificate, income tax returns for the last 2 years and bank statements for the last 6 months; the consul can ask for more.

Applying in the UK, Australia, Canada or Singapore on a Visa-Required Passport
- Apply where you live
- Often 2+ years of residence needed
- 7 to 20+ working days
British, Australian, Canadian and Singaporean citizens need no visa for a holiday (see the questions at the end). This section is for people who live in those countries on a passport that does need one, for example Indian or Filipino nationals in London, Sydney or Toronto.
You apply to the Korean office for the area where you live, and several offices accept certain nationalities only after 2 years of residence. The South Korea visa processing time and the rules differ by office:
| Where you live | Where to apply | Processing time | Points to note |
|---|---|---|---|
| United Kingdom | Korea Visa Application Center (KVAC) in London, run by the IOM, for UK nationals and third-country nationals living in the UK; the embassy only takes diplomatic and official visas | Ask the KVAC; the embassy page gives no time for KVAC applications | Open since 17 January 2022 |
| Sydney (NSW, NT) | Korean Consulate General in Sydney, in person (no booking needed), or by post if you live in the NT or in NSW outside Greater Sydney | About 7 working days in person, about 10 by post | No express service |
| Melbourne (VIC) | Korean Consulate General in Melbourne, by appointment only | At least 10 business days | Flights you have already bought do not count as an emergency |
| Queensland; ACT, SA, WA, TAS | Consulate in Brisbane; Embassy in Canberra | Ask the office | |
| Toronto | Korean Consulate General in Toronto, in person; residents of Ontario or Manitoba who live more than 2 hours away may apply by mail | 7 to 10 business days in person, 17 to 20+ by mail | Mail-in fees by certified cheque or bank draft in CAD |
| Vancouver (BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Yukon, NWT) | Korean Consulate General in Vancouver | About 14 business days (C-3-9) | CAD 54; some nationalities need 2+ years in Canada |
| Singapore | Korean Embassy in Singapore, in person at the KVAC, by appointment | 8 working days, no express | K-ETA nationals must use the K-ETA instead; short-term visitors in Singapore cannot apply there |
In Sydney and Melbourne, nationals of China, the Philippines, Indonesia, India, Vietnam, Thailand, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal and several other countries must show they have lived in Australia continuously for more than 2 years. For the C-3-9 both consulates ask for Australian bank statements for the last 3 months and a passport photo taken within 6 months; Sydney also wants a return ticket and an accommodation booking.

Korean Visa Application Status: How to Check, Track and Print Your Visa
- Free on www.visa.go.kr
- Passport number, name, date of birth
- Print the Visa Grant Notice
To check your South Korea visa status you use one official page: "Check Application Status" on the Korea Visa Portal (www.visa.go.kr). The Korean embassy and consulate home pages we checked link straight to it. It covers applications made at an embassy or consulate, at a visa centre and online as an e-Visa.
How to check Korean visa status, step by step
- 1Open www.visa.go.kr and choose "Check Application Status"
- 2Pick how you applied: Diplomatic office, Visa Application Center, e-Visa (individual or group) or Confirmation of Visa Issuance
- 3Enter the application, receipt or passport number, your name in English and your date of birth. Type the name exactly as it appears in the machine-readable line at the bottom of your passport's photo page; the Philippine embassy adds: last name, space, first name, without the middle name
- 4Read the result: the date of application, the visa type or purpose, the application status and, for refused applications, a line that begins "Your application is denied because"
Applications made at a visa centre show up on the same page; the Chennai consulate, for example, sends its VFS applicants there. If you applied at a visa centre, you can collect your passport only when the status reads "Passport pickup"; "Approved" or "Rejected" alone does not mean it is ready.
In the Philippines the KVAC also sends an SMS, while the Singapore embassy gives no status updates other than the portal.
Print the Visa Grant Notice
Korean missions stopped putting visa stickers in passports on 1 July 2020. Once your visa is approved, the details appear at the bottom of the result page: click "Visa Grant Notice" and print it; a colour or black-and-white print is fine.
You show it with your passport at immigration. The notice shows the visa number, status of stay, period of stay, number of entries, issue date, validity and issuing office.

Korean Visa Denied or K-ETA Refused: Reasons, Reapplying and Refused Entry
- Often no reason is given
- Some missions: wait 2 to 3 months
- Fees are not refunded
A refused K-ETA, a denied Korean visa and being turned back at the airport are three different situations. Below is what the official Korean pages say about each, and where they say nothing.
If your K-ETA is refused
The K-ETA Center does not tell you why: the assessment criteria are classified. The way in is then a visa from a Korean embassy or consulate; the fee rules and the limit on repeated applications are in the K-ETA and C-3-9 sections above.
An approved K-ETA can also be cancelled at any time if information was false, left out or wrong, and false information can bring penalties or entry restrictions under Korean law.

| Will I be told why? | Not always. The Korean Embassy in Uganda, for example, states that no explanation is given, especially for rejections. Check your result on the Korea Visa Portal: refused applications show a line that begins "Your application is denied because". |
| Why are visas refused? | The Korean Consulate General in Hong Kong lists: no valid passport or no clear purpose and length of stay; being considered a risk to Korea's interests or public safety (for example illegal stay) or to economic or social order; certain health grounds; being entry-restricted; false statements or false documents; not attending an interview or not answering honestly. |
| When can I reapply? | It depends on the mission: Hong Kong, after 2 months under normal circumstances; Chennai, Dubai and Uganda, after 3 months. The Philippine and New Delhi pages we read give no waiting period, so ask your mission. |
| Can I appeal? | None of the official pages we read describes an appeal. Chennai says the final decision rests solely with the consulate; the route the pages describe is reapplying after the waiting period. |
| Do I get my money and papers back? | No. The visa fee is not refunded when an application is denied (Korea Visa Portal), and submitted documents are not returned (Dubai, Sydney, Hong Kong, Vancouver). |
| Will it affect later trips? | The pages we read do not say how an ordinary refusal is weighed later. Two cases are spelled out: false statements or false documents can bar you from a visa for up to 3 years (Singapore and Uganda embassies), and anyone refused entry into Korea in the past 3 years cannot use the 30-day visa-free transit scheme. |
A South Korea visa denied by one mission cannot simply be tried again at another: you apply to the Korean embassy or consulate for the country or area where you live (see the sections above).
What to fix before you reapply
No official page promises approval, but the checklists show what missions look at. Hand in every document on your own mission's list for your job, with all the details it asks for (see the Philippine and Australian lists above).
Hong Kong says that if you cannot get a listed document, you should hand in another one that proves the same thing. Make sure your stated purpose and dates match your documents, expect that the mission may ask for more papers, and never use fake documents.
If you are refused entry at the airport
Neither a visa nor a K-ETA guarantees entry. The immigration officer at the port of entry, under the Ministry of Justice, decides. The Korea Visa Portal says officers will refuse an expired, fake or false passport, may refuse you if your visa type does not match your purpose, and that you must have no grounds for entry restriction under the Immigration Act.
The Hong Kong consulate adds that the office that issued your visa takes no responsibility in that case. If the details on an approved K-ETA do not match your passport, you will not be allowed to board.
A refusal of entry also shuts you out of the 30-day visa-free transit scheme for 3 years (2023 notice).

Jeju Island Visa-Free Entry: The Direct-Flight Rule
- Direct international flight
- Visa-required nationals
- 23 countries excluded
Jeju has its own rule. Most nationals who normally need a visa can enter Jeju Island visa-free if they arrive on a direct international flight to Jeju. A route like Singapore → Shanghai → Jeju counts as direct; flying Seoul or Busan → Jeju does not.
Excluded are the 23 countries designated by the Ministry of Justice: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Cameroon, Cuba, Egypt, Gambia, Ghana, Iran, Iraq, Kosovo, Kyrgyzstan, Myanmar, Nigeria, Nepal, Pakistan, Palestine, Senegal, Somalia, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Syria, Uzbekistan, Yemen.
| Your passport | Jeju rule |
|---|---|
| Temporarily exempt (e.g. Singapore, US, UK) | No visa and no K-ETA, whether you fly direct to Jeju or via Seoul |
| K-ETA-required nationalities | K-ETA needed for Jeju too, even on direct flights or ships (since 1 September 2022), unless you are exempt by age or otherwise |
| Visa-required, not one of the 23 | Visa-free on a direct international flight to Jeju; the scheme covers Jeju only, so check with the Korean embassy before travelling on to the mainland |
| One of the 23 countries | Visa required, also for Jeju |

Transit Through Korea: When You Need a K-ETA or a Visa
- Airside: no K-ETA
- Through immigration: K-ETA or visa
- Transit schemes for visa nationals
If you change planes at Incheon and stay in the transit area, you do not need a K-ETA. If you have to pass through immigration, for example to collect your bags or because your itinerary changed, you need a K-ETA (or a visa if your nationality needs one). So a Korea transit visa only matters if you have to pass through immigration and your nationality needs a visa, and even then the visa-free transfer schemes below may apply.
Visa-required travellers have visa-free transfer options. The latest official notice we found (Korean Consulate in Chicago, May 2023) lists, among others:
| Scheme | Who | Stay |
|---|---|---|
| Third-country transit | Visa-required nationals (not the 23 excluded countries) holding a visa (incl. permanent residence or a re-entry permit) for the US (incl. Guam, Saipan), Canada, Australia or New Zealand, or a visa (incl. permanent residence) for one of 32 European countries, travelling to or from that country, with an onward ticket | Up to 30 days |
| Incheon Transit Tourism Program | Transfer passengers on the airport's approved transit tour programme, onward ticket within 72 hours, staying in the capital area | Up to 3 days |
For the 30-day scheme the notice adds: no entry refusal in Korea in the past 3 years, no fine over ₩5 million or deportation, no more than 3 days in the transit country before Korea, and the visa sticker must be in your passport (Australian visas are checked through VEVO). If you are searching for a South Korea visa for green card holders, this is the rule that applies: it covers transit to or from the US, not a stand-alone holiday.

Switzerland and Liechtenstein: Two Official Lists Disagree
- Embassy in Bern: exempt
- Other official lists: not named
- Check the pop-up
Swiss and Liechtenstein travellers: the Korean Embassy in Bern lists you as exempt until 31 December 2026. The earlier official lists of the 22 exempt countries and regions (2023 and 2024) do not include Switzerland or Liechtenstein, and the K-ETA site's own extension notice gives no list. Both countries appear on the K-ETA list with a 3-month stay.
Confirm with the pop-up on k-eta.go.kr: scan your passport in the application and see whether "K-ETA Exempt" appears. If it does not, apply for the K-ETA.

Our Experience: Arriving at Incheon With an Approved K-ETA
- Istanbul → Incheon: about 9.5 hours
- Turkish passport: K-ETA required
- Asked: how many days
Our chef Halil flew from Istanbul to Incheon, a flight of about 9.5 hours. He travelled on a Turkish passport, and Türkiye is on the K-ETA list with a 90-day stay, so he needed a K-ETA (rules for your passport may differ; see the table above).
His advice from the trip: fill in the K-ETA before you come. Once it was approved, entry was easy. At immigration the officer only asked how many days he would stay, then put a sticker in his passport.

Your questions answered
Is K-ETA required for US citizens, and do they need a visa?
No to both. US citizens are temporarily exempt from the K-ETA until 31 December 2026 and can stay up to 90 days visa-free. So the South Korea entry requirements for US citizens on a short trip come down to the arrival card.
Fill in an arrival card (paper or e-Arrival Card). An optional K-ETA for US citizens costs the normal fee and saves you the arrival card.
Do UK citizens need a visa for South Korea?
There is no South Korea visa for UK citizens on holiday. British citizen (GBR) passports are K-ETA exempt until 31 December 2026, with 90 days per visit.
Other UK passport types get 30 days; check the "K-ETA Exempt" pop-up on k-eta.go.kr to see whether you need a K-ETA. If you live in Britain but hold another passport, the rule for a South Korea visa from UK depends on that nationality: check the country table.
Do Australians need a visa or K-ETA for South Korea?
No. There is no South Korea visa for Australian citizens on holiday: Australia is on the temporary exemption list, so no K-ETA is needed until 31 December 2026, and you can stay up to 90 days per visit.
Fill in an arrival card (paper or e-Arrival Card). These South Korea visa requirements for Australian citizens follow the passport, not where you live: an Australian permanent resident follows the rule for their own nationality.
Do Canadians need a K-ETA or visa for South Korea?
No. Canada is on the temporary exemption list, so there is no K-ETA and no South Korea visa for Canadian citizens on holiday until 31 December 2026, and you can stay up to 6 months per visit.
Fill in an arrival card (paper or e-Arrival Card). The South Korea visa requirements for Canadian citizens follow the passport: Canadian permanent residents follow the rule for their own nationality.
Do Singaporeans need a K-ETA for South Korea?
No. Singapore is on the temporary exemption list, so Singapore passport holders need no K-ETA and no visa until 31 December 2026 and can stay up to 90 days per visit. Fill in an arrival card (paper or e-Arrival Card).
If you live in Singapore on another passport and need a Korea visa in Singapore, you apply to the Korean Embassy in Singapore, which processes the C-3-9 in about 8 working days.
Is the K-ETA a visa?
No. It is an electronic travel authorization for visa-free nationals. It does not guarantee entry; the immigration officer decides.
How much does the K-ETA cost?
₩10,000 per person plus an online payment fee of about 3%. It is not refunded, even if refused.
How long does the K-ETA take?
Usually within 72 hours, but it can take longer and there is no express service. Apply well before your flight.
How long is the K-ETA valid?
3 years from approval, or until your passport expires if sooner, for multiple entries.
What is the official K-ETA website?
www.k-eta.go.kr, or the official K-ETA app. There are no official agents.
Is South Korea visa-free for Indians?
No. India is not on the K-ETA list, so Indian citizens need a visa, for tourism usually the C-3-9. Applying for a South Korea visa in India works like anywhere else: through the Korean embassy, consulate or its visa centre for your place of residence, and the South Korea visa requirements for Indian citizens are set by that mission.
Jeju direct flights and transit schemes are exceptions. In short, the South Korea tourist visa for Indians is the C-3-9, and India is not one of the 23 countries excluded from the Jeju scheme.
What are the South Korea visa requirements for Filipino tourists?
Philippine passport holders need a visa. So Korea is not visa-free for Filipinos, except on a direct international flight to Jeju: the Philippines is not one of the 23 excluded countries. Documents differ by mission, so follow the Korean mission where you apply.
The C-3-9 pages we checked (Singapore, Vancouver) ask for a passport valid 6+ months, a photo, proof of employment or study and the last 3 months of bank statements. Group e-visas for the Philippines are issued via visa.go.kr.
Do I need both a K-ETA and an e-Arrival Card?
No. K-ETA holders do not fill in an arrival card. Travellers without a K-ETA (exempt nationals, ages 17 and under or 65 and over, visa holders) fill one in.
What are the South Korea entry requirements for a short trip?
They depend on your passport. Korea entry requirements for tourists follow three paths: the 22 exempt countries and regions (including the US, UK, Canada and Australia) need no visa and no K-ETA until 31 December 2026 and fill in an arrival card; other visa-free nationalities need an approved K-ETA before boarding; everyone else needs a visa, usually the C-3-9. Jeju direct flights and transit have their own rules, shown above.
Can I visit South Korea with a US visa or a UK BRP?
Not on a normal trip from home. A US visa or UK residence does not replace a Korean visa: if your passport needs one, you still apply for it, and UK residents do so through the KVAC in London. These visas only help under the 30-day visa-free transit scheme, when Korea is a stop on your way to or from that country (see the transit section).
The 2023 notice accepts US, Canadian, New Zealand and European visas only as a sticker in the passport and does not mention BRP cards.
Is there a Korea visa on arrival for Indian citizens?
None of the official pages we read mentions one. The Korean Consulate in Chennai states that Indian nationals must apply for and obtain the visa through the Korea Visa Portal and a visa application centre. The only ways in without a visa are the Jeju direct-flight and transit schemes described above.
K-ETA member vs non-member: what is the difference?
Without an account (non-member) you can add up to 9 other people to one application; with an account (member) up to 1,000, which suits large groups. A saved application is continued by confirming your email again as a non-member, or by logging in as a member, and it is deleted if not continued within 7 days.
