Where to stay in Bratislava, in short: the Old Town (Staré Mesto) for a first night or two, Podhradie below the castle for a quiet night, the Eurovea riverfront for space and parking, the main station for trains and the airport bus, and Petržalka across the Danube on a budget. We stayed in Vienna and came by morning train. See Bratislava hotels and prices Ad

Danube riverfront, west of the Old Town · about 15-20 min to the Main Square
Bratislava has only a handful of 5-star hotels, and most of the big names line the Danube. The two most searched are Grand Hotel River Park, the riverfront spa hotel, and Marrol's Boutique Hotel, the small one at the edge of the Old Town; both have their own card below. We haven't stayed in any of them; the details below come from the hotels' own websites and booking sites, and prices change with dates. Star ratings are as shown on Booking.com; Hotel Devín also states its 4 stars on its own website.Eurovea, Danube riverfront · about 15 min to the Main Square

A small boutique hotel in a restored historic building on Tobrucká street, with 54 rooms, its own restaurant and a spa. Best for: something quiet and personal over a big hotel.See Marrol's Boutique Hotel prices AdHviezdoslavovo námestie · about 3 min to the Main Square
On Hviezdoslavovo námestie in a neoclassical building, a few minutes from the Main Square. Listed as 4-star on Booking.com, in one of the most central spots in the city. Best for: walking straight out to the Christmas market and the Main Square.See Radisson Blu Carlton prices AdDanube riverfront · about 5 min to the Main Square
On the riverbank directly in front of the Old Town; its own website lists it as 4-star. The Danube in front, the old streets behind. Best for: a river-view room within walking distance of the Old Town.See Hotel Devín prices AdBetween the Old Town and the main station · about 10 min to the Main Square
A modern design hotel on Štefánikova street, listed as 4-star. Best for: a middle ground close to both the Old Town and the trains.See LOFT Hotel Bratislava prices AdGood to know: star ratings on booking sites are not always the official classification; if the category matters to you, check the hotel's own website. For an Old Town base, choose the Carlton, Devín or Marrol's; for big rooms and parking, the Sheraton or River Park.
Prices vary a lot by area and date: the Old Town, Staré Mesto, is the most expensive and Petržalka the cheapest. Bratislava has no metro; you walk the Old Town and use trams and buses from the outer areas. The link under each card opens that area's hotels with prices for your dates.
The right base for a first visit of one or two nights: the Main Square, the cathedral and the foot of the castle hill are a few minutes apart; in return it's Bratislava's most expensive area.
Good for: First-timers, short stays
Getting around: Pedestrian zone; walk to the sights
Things to do: Hviezdoslav Square and the Old Town , St. Martin's Cathedral
Food and drink: Café Mayer (croissants and coffee on the Main Square), Slovak Pub (just north of the Old Town on Obchodná street)
Watch the video · 29:21 breakfast at Café Mayer
Hotels are mostly in old buildings, so rooms can be small and not every place has a lift. Taxis may not reach hotels inside the pedestrian zone.
Podhradie below the castle and Palisády to its north sit right next to the Old Town without the evening crowds; a good pick for couples who want a quiet night.
Good for: Couples who want a quiet night
Getting around: On foot; uphill to the castle and back from the Old Town
Things to do: Bratislava Castle , Slavín War Memorial , St. Martin's Cathedral
Watch the video · 31:18 walking through the castle courtyard
The downside is the hills: with luggage, a stroller or tired legs, the ups and downs add up. We walked up from the cathedral to the castle; it's short but steep.
A newer district on the Danube east of the Old Town, with the Eurovea mall, a river promenade and big chain hotels.
Good for: Families, big rooms, parking
Getting around: 15-20 min walk along the river to the Old Town; Nivy bus station nearby
Things to do: Hviezdoslav Square and the Old Town , about 20 minutes on foot along the river
There's no historic feel; the edge of the Old Town is a 15-20 minute walk along the river. Nivy, the intercity bus station, is on this side too.
Airport bus 61 and the trains to Vienna and Budapest all stop here.
Good for: Train travellers, late arrivals
Getting around: Trains to Vienna and Budapest; airport bus 61 ends here
Things to do: Slavín War Memorial about 10 minutes on foot, the Slovak Radio building about 15 minutes

The northern edge of the Old Town is a 20-25 minute walk, downhill on the way in and uphill on the way back. The station area is quiet at night, and you'll head into the Old Town to eat.
A big residential district on the south bank of the Danube and the city's cheapest area; pick the southern end of the UFO bridge and the Old Town is a 15-20 minute walk.
Good for: Budget travellers, drivers
Getting around: Walk over the UFO bridge; trams and buses from the inner estates
Things to do: the UFO bridge (Most SNP), seen from Hviezdoslav Square and the Old Town
Watch the video · 30:10 looking at the UFO bridge from Rybné námestie
The inner estates are far from the centre, so you'll rely on trams and buses, and there are fewer restaurants. Some trains from Vienna stop at Bratislava-Petržalka station here.
Bratislava Christmas runs from 27 November 2026 to 3 January 2027; the main Christmas market opens on 26 November 2026 and fills the Main Square, Hlavné námestie, and the neighbouring Františkánske and Primaciálne squares (official info, 24 October 2026).
Opening hours haven't been published yet. Dates can change; check the market's official page before you go.
Good to know: central hotels sell out early on December weekends. If your dates are set, book a free-cancellation room now and decide later. Rooms overlooking the squares are noisy during market hours.
The best base for these weeks is the Old Town: when the lights come on you're a few minutes from your room, mulled wine in hand, with no long walk in the cold. The Radisson Blu Carlton, about 3 minutes from the Main Square, and the riverside Hotel Devín are the closest big hotels; both are on the luxury card above.
If the Old Town is full, Eurovea and the main station area are good fallbacks, 15-20 minutes on foot from the stalls. We haven't been to Bratislava at Christmas ourselves.
Bratislava's Old Town has many apartments inside historic buildings; for two nights or more, or for a group, you often get more space for the same money. Along the Danube there are also botels, hotel boats moored on the river, for something a bit different.
Apartments in old buildings often have no lift, so check the floor in the listing. Cars can't easily reach places in the pedestrian zone, so arrange parking separately.
It depends heavily on dates, so we won't quote a fixed number. We compared the featured hotels on Booking.com's area pages on the same day: the Old Town was the most expensive, Eurovea close behind, the station area a little cheaper and Petržalka the cheapest.
Featured hotels in Vienna were clearly pricier than in Bratislava that day (Booking.com, October 2026). Central hotels fill up early during the Christmas market weeks. For live prices on your dates, use the link at the top of the page.
Inside the Old Town, between the Main Square and Michael's Gate. We walked the Old Town, the cathedral and the castle in half a day; stay here and you start that same route from your hotel door. The streets around Michael's Gate, at the northern edge of the Old Town, are central without the full Main Square crowds. See hotels near Michael's Gate Ad
Petržalka and the main station area. On Booking.com's area pages, featured hotels in Petržalka were clearly cheaper than in the Old Town on the same day, with the station area in between (Booking.com, October 2026).
In Petržalka, pick a place near the Danube bridges; from the inner estates you'll need a tram or bus into town. In the Old Town, the way to save is an apartment or guesthouse instead of a hotel.
City bus 61 runs from the airport straight to the main railway station, Hlavná stanica. If you land late or fly out early, a hotel near the station makes life easier; the northern edge of the Old Town is about 20-25 minutes' walk from there. Many visitors fly into Vienna instead; trains and buses link the two cities.
By train in about an hour; that's how we came in the morning. REX trains from Vienna arrive either at Bratislava hl. st., the main station, or at Bratislava-Petržalka, depending on the line, so pick your hotel by the station on your ticket.
From March to November the Twin City Liner boat also sails down the Danube in about 75 minutes (official info, October 2026). Details are in the getting there section of our Bratislava guide .
Much of the Old Town is pedestrianised, so you may not be able to drive up to your hotel. Bratislava has a city-wide paid parking scheme called PAAS, and street parking in the Old Town is paid (official info, October 2026).
Check whether your listing includes parking and what it costs; hotels with their own parking are easier to find in Petržalka and around Eurovea. If you plan to rent a car: Bratislava Airport car rental prices Ad
Petržalka is a large residential district. Official travel advice has no specific warning about Petržalka; its pickpocketing warning focuses on the Old Town, nightlife areas and the Christmas markets, and it also mentions drink spiking and overcharging in some Old Town clubs (official info, October 2026).
Petržalka's real downside is distance: stay deep inside it and you'll take public transport into town every day.
One day covers the Old Town and the castle; we had until 14:00 and still saw the Old Town, the cathedral, Slavín and the castle and had lunch. Stay one night and you can add Devín Castle on the Danube the next morning. If you prefer a guide: Old Town and castle walking tour Ad
