Where to Stay in Budapest: Best Areas

Where to stay in Budapest, in short: District V for a first visit of two or three nights, District VI or VII for a better price without leaving the centre, District XIII for a quiet longer stay and District I on Castle Hill for the view. We spent five nights in an apartment on Király utca in District VII.

Below we compare five areas: who each one suits, the metro lines, and the sights and food stops nearby. Prices change a lot by date, and December is the most expensive month. To see every hotel with current prices for your dates: See Budapest hotels and prices  Ad

Prices change a lot by district and date: District V is the most expensive, XIII usually the cheapest. The link under each card opens that district's hotels with prices for your dates.

District V (Belváros-Lipótváros)

Who it suits: First visit, two or three nights: the Parliament, the Basilica, Váci Street and the Danube bank are all on foot, and the M1, M2 and M3 metro lines meet at Deák Ferenc tér. In return it is the priciest district in the city.

Best for: First visit, short stay

Metro: M1, M2, M3 Deák Ferenc tér; M2 Kossuth tér

Things to do: Hungarian Parliament Building , St. Stephen's Basilica and the Dome Terrace , Shoes on the Danube Bank , Chain Bridge , Váci Street , Vörösmarty Square , Párisi Udvar , Danube River Cruise from Vigadó Square , River Ride

District VI (Terézváros)

Who it suits: You want to walk into the centre in 10 to 15 minutes without paying District V prices: Andrássy Avenue and the Opera are here, and the yellow M1 metro runs under the avenue to Heroes' Square and the Széchenyi Baths.

Best for: Good value, close to the centre

Metro: M1 Opera and Oktogon

Things to do: Hungarian State Opera House , Andrássy Avenue , The M1 Metro ; M1 with a few stops: Heroes' Square (Hősök tere) , City Park and Vajdahunyad Castle , Széchenyi Thermal Baths , House of Music Hungary

District VII (Erzsébetváros)

Who it suits: You want the widest choice of food within walking distance of the centre: the Jewish Quarter, Gozsdu Udvar and most of the streets we ate on are here. We stayed in this district too, on Király utca. The streets are busy in the evening, so if you sleep lightly pick a room facing the courtyard rather than the street.

Best for: Food lovers; where we stayed

Metro: M2 Astoria and Blaha Lujza tér

Things to do: Dohány Street Synagogue and the Jewish Quarter , Gozsdu Udvar

District XIII (Újlipótváros)

Who it suits: You are staying longer and want a quiet residential area, perhaps an apartment with a kitchen: it lies north of the Parliament, right opposite Margaret Island. Booking lists it as Angyalföld. You reach most sights by tram or the M3 metro.

Best for: Longer stays, families

Metro: M3 Nyugati and Lehel tér; tram 4 and 6

Things to do: Margaret Island

District I (Buda Castle)

Who it suits: You are staying for the view: Buda Castle, Fisherman's Bastion and Matthias Church are on your doorstep, and you can see them early before the crowds. Booking lists the area as Budavár. The streets are steep and cobbled and most evenings you will go down to Pest to eat, so for a first visit the Pest side is easier.

Best for: The view, a quiet evening

Metro: No metro on Castle Hill; funicular and buses

Things to do: Buda Castle and the Hungarian National Gallery , Fisherman's Bastion , Matthias Church , Castle Hill Funicular (Budavári Sikló)

Watch in the video · 18:05  the view from Fisherman's Bastion

Where to Stay in Budapest at Christmas: How to Choose an Area by Market

Budapest's two best-known Christmas markets, the one on Vörösmarty Square and the one in front of St. Stephen's Basilica, are both in District V, within walking distance of each other. If you want to walk back to your hotel from the market in the evening, choose your area with that in mind.

We did not visit Budapest at Christmas; check this year's dates and opening hours on the markets' official pages before you go, as they can change every year.

District V

both markets are here

Vörösmarty Square and the Basilica square are both in this district, so you can walk between the markets and back to your hotel. If the centre is full, Districts VI and VII are also within walking distance of the markets.

Book early for December

Market weekends are when hotels fill fastest. Book early with free cancellation; a weekday night instead of a Saturday makes it easier to find a room.

Our stay5 nights, 2 people, booked on Booking

Where we stayed in Budapest. It is very central: Twentysix and Stika are on the next corners, with Gozsdu Udvar and the Opera a short walk away.

Halil's Notes

  • Location: Excellent; on our last morning we did not go far for breakfast, Stika was a couple of steps away.
  • Building: The building itself is a bit run-down; you go in through the street door and along a long open corridor above the courtyard. At night it can feel a little spooky.
  • Room: On the second floor, at the very end of the corridor. Our room was genuinely nice.
  • Arrival: We landed very late, so we took a taxi from the airport for about 25 euros. Earlier in the day the 100E express bus is the easiest and cheapest way into the centre.
  • Who it suits: Anyone who wants a central, good-value apartment and does not mind an old building's entrance.
  • Video: Watch in the video · 1:54  walking in and our room

Its Booking score is 6.9 (Booking, October 2026); read the latest reviews about the building before you book.

Where to stay in Budapest: your questions answered

Where to stay in Budapest?

First visit and two or three nights: District V, around the Parliament, the Basilica and Váci Street. For a better price without leaving the centre: District VI along Andrássy Avenue, or District VII, the Jewish Quarter, where we stayed. For a quiet longer stay: District XIII; for the view: District I on Castle Hill.

Is it better to stay in Buda or Pest?

For most visitors, Pest. It is flat, the metro lines meet there and most sights and restaurants are on that side. Buda, especially Castle Hill, is quieter and has the views, but the streets are steep and you will cross the river most evenings to eat.

How do I get from the airport to my hotel?

The 100E express bus is the easiest and cheapest way into the centre. We landed very late, so we took a taxi instead, which came to about 25 euros. If your hotel is in District V, VI or VII, the centre is a short walk or a couple of metro stops from where the bus drops you.

How much are hotels in Budapest?

It depends a lot on dates and district: District V is the most expensive, VI and VII are in between, and XIII is usually cheaper. December and market weekends are the priciest time. The best way is to put in your dates and compare; the link under each area card opens that district with prices.

Apartment or hotel in Budapest?

We stayed in an apartment in District VII and were happy with the room and the location. For three nights or more, or a family, an apartment makes sense; check the check-in arrangements and read the latest reviews about the building, as many apartments are in old buildings with shared corridors.

What should I check before booking?

Total price: compare with tourist tax included. Free cancellation: most places offer it, always choose it for December. Building and entrance: in old buildings, read recent reviews about the entrance and lift. Metro: check how many minutes the nearest M1, M2 or M3 station is.
