What kind of place is Trattoria Pomo D'Oro?
Trattoria Pomo D'Oro is an Italian restaurant on the Pest side, at Arany János utca 9, a short walk from St. Stephen's Basilica. It is one of the best-known Italian places in the city and evenings are usually full.
We went twice. On this trip we went back because, honestly, it is that good. This time we focused on a starter, a pizza and a pasta.

What to order
Burrata
Creamy, fresh and simple; we tried it on both visits and it was the best plate each time. One plate in the middle is plenty for two or three people.
The olive oils
The olive oils that come to the table are so good you could eat them with bread on their own. Most tables skip them; we loved them, so do not.
Pizza
Thin in the middle with a slightly puffy edge. It comes with a knife and fork and is eaten that way; we prefer eating pizza with our hands, but here there was no choice. If you are a group, do not order one pizza each: a pizza, a pasta and a starter in the middle is plenty for two.
Penne all'arrabbiata
We were worried it would be very spicy. It is not: anyone with an average tolerance for chilli will finish it happily, and it was very good.
Steak and desserts
On our first visit we also tried a dry-aged steak, which was good but pricey and large, so share it; ask for it one level more cooked than you would at home if you do not like it rare. The dessert plate of tiramisu, profiteroles and lemon millefeuille was fine but not at the level of the mains, so you do not have to save room.
Before you go
Book for dinner. Evenings are busy and finding a table without a booking is hard.
Allow time. The waiters are attentive but slow; on this visit we waited about an hour for our mains. Do not squeeze it in before a concert or a tour; make it the evening itself.
Getting there. The restaurant is on a quiet street between the Basilica and the Parliament, a few minutes' walk from the Arany János utca stop on the blue M3 metro line.
Want to stay nearby? The restaurant is in District V; you can see District V hotels Ad for your dates, or compare areas in our where to stay in Budapest guide.
Our verdict
Burrata, pizza and penne all'arrabbiata are the three stars here, with the olive oils a surprise fourth. Book ahead and give yourself time. For the rest of what we ate in the city, see our what to eat in Budapest guide.
