Where to stay in Strasbourg, in short: the Grande Île or La Petite France for a first visit and the Christmas market, the station area for train day trips, and the European quarter or Kehl across the Rhine if you drive or watch your budget. We didn't sleep in Strasbourg; we drove in on our Alsace trip, walked until night and went back to our hotel. See places to stay in Strasbourg Ad

Cathedral and Grande Île
Inside the Christmas Markets
Best for: a first visit and waking up inside the Christmas markets. The island between two arms of the river Ill holds the cathedral at its heart, the historic Christkindelsmärik on Place Broglie to the north and Place Kléber with the Great Christmas Tree to the west. It is also the dearest area in December: hotels within 800 m of the cathedral showed roughly 300-€750 for two on 8-9 December 2026 and 60-€170 on 12-13 January 2027 (Booking, checked 15 October 2026).
Cars are banned on the island during market hours, with checks at the bridges. Our own walk began on Rue Mercière, where the cathedral facade rose straight ahead.
Best for: photographers and anyone who wants a quieter evening after the crowds. This is the canal end of the island, ten minutes west of the cathedral on foot, with its own market on Place Benjamin-Zix and Place Saint-Thomas. Booking files it under one district with the cathedral area, and December prices sit in the same band.
Nightly rate: 300-€750
Best for: Photos, quieter evenings
Trade-offs: Booking groups it with the cathedral area
Vibe: Canals and timbered houses
Distance to centre: 10 min walk to the cathedral
Within a short walk:the Petite France canals , the covered bridges of the Ponts Couverts and the Barrage Vauban roof terrace
Best for: stepping off the train with a suitcase and riding out to the Alsace villages next morning. The station sits just west of the Grande Île; the official Christmas site marks a signed walking route from the station forecourt, about ten minutes to the first chalets.
Hotels within 800 m of the station showed roughly 220-€610 for two on 8-9 December 2026 and 65-€160 in mid-January; cheaper than the island, but still busy in Advent.
Nightly rate: 220-€610
Best for: Train travellers, day trips
Trade-offs: Also fills up in Advent
Vibe: Practical, rail links
Distance to centre: 10 min walk to the markets
Transport: trains to Basel, Colmar and Obernai; tram lines A, C and D
Best for: arriving by car, wanting parking, or travelling as a family. The modern district around the European Parliament and Council of Europe, with leafy Robertsau next to it, north-east of the centre.
Calmer and cheaper than the island: hotels near the Parliament showed roughly 170-€340 for two on 8-9 December 2026 and 90-€145 in mid-January. Leave the car at the hotel and take the tram in.
Nightly rate: 170-€340
Best for: Drivers, families
Trade-offs: Tram or car back from the markets
Vibe: Modern chains, a château
Distance to centre: 2-5 km, tram
Transport: 2-5 km from the centre by tram
Nearby: European Parliament, Orangerie Park
Before you go: leave the car at the hotel in December; the tram drops you closer to the stalls than any car park could.
Best for: anyone priced out of Strasbourg in Advent, or driving. Kehl is the German town linked to Strasbourg by bridge; both are in Schengen, with no routine border checks.
The CTS 24-hour ticket also covers tram line D to Kehl (CTS, January 2026). Rooms are scarce here too: on 8-9 December 2026 Booking showed only 12 hotels open, at roughly 70-€185 for two.
Nightly rate: 70-€185
Best for: Budget, drivers
Trade-offs: Few hotels, early sell-out
Vibe: Across the Rhine, calm
Distance to centre: Tram D to the centre
Transport: tram D into central Strasbourg
Nearby: the Rhine bank, Kehl station
Before you go: Kehl is in Germany. You cross freely within Schengen, but carry your passport or ID.
Looking for hotels near the Strasbourg Christmas market? The eight markets cluster on and around the island, none more than a short stroll from the next. In 2026 they open daily 11:00-21:00 from 27 November to 24 December, with a 14:00 start on opening day and an 18:00 finish on the last (noel.strasbourg.eu).
If you don't want to queue for a tram at closing time, choose a hotel a few streets from the square you'll spend most time on. Every market is described on our Strasbourg Christmas market page.
More about this area
Between Broglie and the cathedral: the Christkindelsmärik on your doorstep
Broglie, home of the 1570 Christkindelsmärik, and the chalets in front of the cathedral are only a few minutes apart. Hôtel Léonor is just north of Broglie; Gutenberg and Cour du Corbeau are a few streets from the cathedral.
Place Kléber and La Petite France: the tree and the canal markets
Kléber has the giant fir and the charity village; the canal quarter has its own chalets around Benjamin-Zix and Saint-Thomas. Maison Rouge is beside Kléber; Regent Petite France and Le Bouclier d'Or are on the canals.
Near the station: for day trips by train
It is ten minutes on the signed route to the first chalets. If you're adding the Colmar and Obernai markets, it is the easiest base for catching trains without dragging luggage around.
Best Hotels in Strasbourg: Two Five-Stars and 12 Picks by Area
Two five-star addresses, boutique hotels in the old town, practical choices facing the station and chains with parking: 14 hotels, sorted by area. We didn't stay in any of them; ratings and review summaries were read on Booking's hotel pages on 15 October 2026.
Hotel & Spa Regent Petite France
Petite France · 5 stars · 5 Rue des Moulins
For a canal view: Booking 9.0 (2,198 reviews), location 9.8. Guests praise the spacious, clean rooms and the staff; attic rooms can feel dark and the spa needs booking. Paid covered parking.
To sleep next to the Christmas tree: Booking 8.9 (1,302 reviews), location 9.6. Location, cleanliness and staff are praised; the sofa bed is uncomfortable and parking is hard to find.
Grande Île · 4 stars · historic courtyard building
For a historic building: Booking 9.3 (1,403 reviews), location 9.9, staff 9.7. Guests love the building and family rooms; some find breakfast poor value. Valet parking.
In December, most free beds in Strasbourg are not in hotels: of the 200 properties Booking showed open for 8-9 December 2026, 42 were hotels and the rest apartments and guesthouses. A flat with a kitchen suits longer stays; a hostel suits a short solo trip.
Which suits whom
Apartment: three nights or more, a kitchen, or a large family. Read the key handover time and whether there is a lift; central flats can top €450 for two in December.
Hostel: solo and budget travellers. Dorm or private room, and how many minutes to the nearest tram stop: check both in the listing.
Cleaning fees and tourist tax often sit outside the nightly rate; compare the total.
How do I get from Basel airport to a Strasbourg hotel?
Leave EuroAirport by the French exit, take the shuttle bus to Saint-Louis station and the regional train straight to Strasbourg station; hotels near the station are easiest with luggage. Check Basel to Strasbourg train times Ad
Where should first-time visitors stay in Strasbourg?
On the Grande Île, the island old town: around the cathedral or in La Petite France. All eight Christmas markets are on or beside the island, and the cathedral, Place Kléber and the canals are a walk apart. We parked once and did everything on foot.
How far ahead do Christmas market hotels sell out?
As early as you can. The official site gives the 2026 market as 27 November to 24 December (noel.strasbourg.eu). In mid-October, Booking already showed only 42 hotels with rooms for the night of 8-9 December, and Saturdays were tighter still. A Monday or Tuesday night is easier to find and cheaper.
How much are hotels in Strasbourg?
Approximate ranges for two people, one night, before taxes, seen on Booking on 15 October 2026 for 8-9 December 2026: Kehl 70-€185, European quarter 170-€340, station area 220-€610, cathedral and Petite France 300-€750. The same areas drop to 55-€205 on 12-13 January 2027.
Strasbourg or Colmar: where should I stay?
If you are seeing both, Strasbourg is bigger with far more rooms, and Colmar is about 30 minutes away by train. Colmar is small and very crowded on Advent weekends. Check Strasbourg to Colmar train times Ad
What should I check before booking?
Total price: Booking shows taxes and fees on a separate line. Parking: we left our car outside the old town and walked in; island hotels rarely have spaces and motor traffic is barred there while the stalls are open. Park-and-ride is €4.20 a day, tram fare included for the whole car (official site). Location: outside the island, check the walk to the nearest tram stop.
