Alsace Christmas Markets 2026: Dates, Route, Best Towns

The Alsace Christmas markets open in late November, with Colmar first on 23 November 2026 and four more towns on 27 November. Strasbourg closes on Christmas Eve, while Colmar and Obernai carry on past Christmas. We flew into Basel and toured these towns by coach; here is how to choose between them, and when.

Alsace Christmas Markets 2026 Dates and Opening Hours

Alsace has no single Christmas market and no shared calendar: each town sets its own 2026 dates, and every market here is free to walk into. Usual hours are below; opening days, Christmas Eve and other exceptions are in the guide for each town.

Market2026 datesUsual hours
Strasbourg27 November to 24 DecemberEvery day 11:00 to 21:00
Colmar23 November to 29 DecemberMonday to Thursday 11:00 to 19:00; Friday to Sunday 10:00 to 20:00
Riquewihr27 November to 20 DecemberMonday to Friday 10:00 to 18:30; weekends 10:00 to 19:00
KaysersbergFridays to Sundays only: 27 to 29 November; 4 to 6, 11 to 13 and 18 to 20 December10:00 to 20:00
Obernai27 November to 31 December, closed 25 DecemberSunday to Thursday 10:00 to 20:00; Friday and Saturday 10:00 to 21:00

All five trade together only on the weekends from Friday 27 November to Sunday 20 December. If you were looking for the Alsace Christmas market 2025 dates, that season has ended and this table is for this winter. Obernai's calendar also shows 30 December as a last day, so ask the tourist office before planning around the 31st.

Dates can change, confirm before you go on the official page in each market's card (official information, checked 1 November 2026).

Other countries are on our all Christmas markets  page.

Best Christmas Markets in Alsace: Which One Suits You?

A tourist boat on the Lauch canal in Colmar's Little Venice, with half-timbered houses and the Ferris wheel
  • First visit, big city: Strasbourg, with eight markets and the Great Christmas Tree.
  • The storybook canal scene, or travelling with children: Colmar, which has a whole market for kids in Little Venice.
  • A medieval village inside its walls: Riquewihr, open daily until 20 December.
  • Crafts on a weekend away: Kaysersberg, open only from Friday to Sunday.
  • Something small and easy by train: Obernai, a short ride from Strasbourg.
  • Between Christmas and New Year: only Colmar and Obernai are still trading.

Colmar or Strasbourg Christmas market? For us the highlight was Colmar, for the way it looks, and it was also where we could hardly move. Strasbourg gives you more markets and more evening. Trains between them need only about thirty minutes, which makes both possible on a two-night trip.

The largest in the region spreads over eight sites on the island that holds the old town, from the Christkindelsmärik on Place Broglie, which the official site dates to 1570, to the tree on Place Kléber (official information, checked 1 November 2026). Opening-day hours, the eight sites and parking are in our Strasbourg Christmas market guide .

More about this market

Our experience: Strasbourg was our last stop, half an hour's drive from Obernai. We walked in from the car park to the cathedral and La Petite France, then had a coffee on Place Kléber once the lights were on. We had not booked anything, and the canal boats were full until the following month.

Hours

Where
old town squares

Colmar opens first and runs past Christmas. The old town holds six separate markets, including one built for children, and the Ferris wheel and gourmet market carry on after the stalls pack up (official information, checked 1 November 2026). Each square, the wheel and the parking rules are in our Colmar Christmas market guide .

More about this market

Our experience: we came straight from two quiet villages and it was a shock: so full that we struggled to walk by the canal. The boat queue in Little Venice was about an hour, so we skipped it, and it took four or five restaurants before one could seat us.

Chalets line the village's central street and its side lanes, under what the tourist office describes as thousands of lights (official information, checked 1 November 2026). It closes before Christmas week, so plan this one early. The shuttle, parking and village lanes are in our Riquewihr guide .

More about this market

Our experience: we walked the main street among the waffle and food chalets, in the days after Christmas, with a pretzel topped with sesame and poppy seeds in hand. Swiss cheeses sit on the counters next to local ones here, a reminder of how close the border is.

Dates

Hours
10:00 to 20:00
Where
Arsenal courtyard and behind Sainte-Croix church

This market is not daily: it runs on the four weekends before Christmas, with chalets in the Arsenal courtyard and on the square behind the church. The village promises stallholders chosen against a strict set of rules (official information, checked 1 November 2026). Parking, the church concerts and the castle walk are in our Kaysersberg guide .

More about this market

Our experience: a 20-minute drive from Riquewihr. The stalls had gone when we came after Christmas, but the facades were still dressed up and the stream with its stone bridge was reason enough to stop. Coming on a weekend in Advent gives you the market as well.

five squares in the old town

Forty-five chalets of food and crafts spread over five squares. New for 2026 is a light show on the town hall, at 18:00 and 19:00 each evening from 1 December until Christmas Eve (official information, checked 1 November 2026). The Christmas train, the miniature village and the hotels are in our Obernai guide .

More about this market

Our experience: we stopped here in daylight on the way to Strasbourg and the stalls were still open. It was the opposite of Colmar: a small market with a calm square, cured meats and sweets, and room to look at them.

How Many Days for the Alsace Christmas Markets? Itinerary and Route

Suits of armour and a crossbow in a wood-panelled room at Haut-Koenigsbourg Castle, Alsace

Two days: Colmar and Strasbourg, by train. You miss the villages but need no car and no shuttle.

Three days, our suggestion for all five: arrive on a Friday between 27 November and 18 December. Friday: Obernai in daylight, Strasbourg for the evening. Saturday: train to Colmar and the shuttle to Riquewihr and Kaysersberg, back for dinner. Sunday: Colmar's squares in the morning, before the crowds, then home through Basel.

The route we took: we did this on a coach tour from Basel airport, after a first day in Freiburg and Basel. The order was Riquewihr, Kaysersberg 20 minutes on, Colmar half an hour later; next day Haut-Kœnigsbourg Castle, Obernai and finally Strasbourg. That order works just as well in a hire car.

Haut-Kœnigsbourg: no market, but the castle sits above the plain between Colmar and Obernai, and we broke the drive there. Winter days are short: on 1 November 2026 the official hours stopped at 17:00, with a break at lunchtime. See castle entry tickets  Ad

Getting to the Alsace Christmas Markets: Basel, Strasbourg and the Shuttle

Through Basel: we landed at EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg and left by the French exit. Without a tour, the bus from that exit goes to Saint-Louis station for regional trains north. From Basel, the fastest train reaches Colmar in 37 minutes and Strasbourg in 75 to 90 (Omio, October 2026).

Through Strasbourg: from Paris Gare de l'Est, the TGV needs about 1 hour 46 minutes. From Strasbourg, regional trains reach Obernai in 28 minutes and Colmar in about half an hour (Omio, October 2026).

The village shuttle bus: Riquewihr and Kaysersberg have no station. From 27 November to 20 December 2026, on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, the Christmas shuttle leaves Colmar station for both. A day ticket is €17, under-12s are free, and sales open on 12 November at 12:00 CET on the shuttle page  (official information, checked 1 November 2026).

By car or tour: a hire car adds the castle, but Strasbourg and Colmar keep traffic out of the centre during market hours, so use the park-and-ride sites listed in each guide. A guided Christmas market tour from Strasbourg or Colmar saves all of this planning.

Where to Stay for the Alsace Christmas Markets

The Lauch canal in Little Venice, Colmar, with yellow facades and Christmas decorations

We did not sleep in Strasbourg or Colmar on our tour, so this is about choosing a base rather than a hotel. Rooms go early: Booking showed over 98 per cent of Riquewihr and Kaysersberg places gone for the second Saturday of December when we searched on 15 October 2026.

Strasbourg: the widest choice and the best trains; for each neighbourhood, read where to stay in Strasbourg .

Colmar: the closest city to the villages and the starting point of the shuttle; see where to stay in Colmar .

Villages and Obernai: quiet once the day trippers leave, but better with a car. For every Alsace base side by side, see where to stay in France .

Alsace Christmas Market Food: What to Eat and Drink

Halil Şımır tasting a glass of white mulled wine at a restaurant table in Colmar

Vin chaud: the French name for what Germans across the Rhine call glühwein. Over dinner in Colmar we tried red and then white; I had never met the white version and liked it better.

Tarte flambée: thin dough with cream and onion, often bacon. Ours in Colmar also came with cheese and mushrooms.

Pretzels and waffles: easy to eat while you walk. In Riquewihr we also found a chocolate-covered marshmallow on a honey wafer, sold by a dessert shop.

To take home: bredele, the Alsace Christmas cookies, sold by the box, plus pain d'épices, kougelhopf and Obernai's cured meats.

Cups: in Strasbourg hot drinks come in a returnable cup with a €1 deposit, refunded at any drinks stall (official information, checked 1 November 2026).

Before You Go: Alsace Christmas Market Tips

Christmas crowds by the canal in Colmar, with half-timbered houses behind

Book dinner and boats: Colmar and Strasbourg were the two places where going without a booking cost us, in tables and in canal rides.

Choose your day: Strasbourg's organisers point to mornings and weekdays as the calmer times. Save Kaysersberg for a Friday to Sunday and do Riquewihr on a weekday.

Pay and dress: nearly all Strasbourg chalets take cards, but queues build at island ATMs, so carry some cash. It was cold on our trip, and layers helped more than any single coat.

Papers: France, Germany and Switzerland are all in Schengen, so one entry covers a route through Basel. Our Schengen visa guide  explains who needs to apply.

Where can I find a map of the Alsace Christmas markets?

The five towns sit on our map of the Alsace region ; the squares of each town are in its own guide.

When do the Christmas markets start in Alsace?

Colmar opens first in 2026, on 23 November. Strasbourg, Riquewihr, Kaysersberg and Obernai follow on 27 November.

Are the Alsace Christmas markets open after Christmas?

Only some. Colmar runs to 29 December and Obernai to 31 December. Strasbourg ends on 24 December, and Riquewihr and Kaysersberg end on 20 December.

Are they open on Christmas Day?

Colmar is. Strasbourg, Riquewihr and Kaysersberg have closed by then, and Obernai shuts on 25 December.

Can you visit without a car?

Yes. Trains link Strasbourg, Obernai and Colmar, and the Christmas shuttle from Colmar reaches Riquewihr and Kaysersberg from Friday to Sunday until 20 December.

Are there Alsace Christmas market tours?

Yes. We travelled on a coach tour, and day tours from Strasbourg and Colmar stop at the village markets; the links are under each market above.
