Riquewihr, France: Things to Do, Christmas Market 2026 and Getting There from Colmar

SchengenFranceCity guide

Riquewihr, France, is a walled medieval village in Alsace, about 13 km north-west of Colmar, and one of the Most Beautiful Villages of France. Things to do in Riquewihr fit into one walk: the Dolder gate tower, the main street, the back lanes and, in Advent, a Christmas market. We came on a December morning tour and didn’t stay overnight. Below: our route, what we ate, 2026 market dates, hotels and the bus from Colmar.

In the order of our video. Inside the walls everything is close together, so we covered all four stops in a single loop of roughly ninety minutes to two hours, without paying for a single ticket.

1

The town hall, the main street and the Dolder tower

Rue du Général-de-Gaulle, the spine of the village

Free to walkDolder built in 129125 m tall

We walked in past the old town hall at the bottom of the village. From there the main street climbs gently uphill, lined with painted half-timbered houses, and ends at a clock and bell tower.

The town hall dates from 1809. The tower at the top is the Dolder, raised in 1291 together with the first ring of walls as the town’s gate. It stands 25 metres high and its three upper floors hold a small local museum (French Wikipedia). Walk under its arch and you reach the second line of fortifications.

2

Lit-up lanes and half-timbered houses

Free16th-century look

Walking these streets felt like stepping into an old storybook. Our timing was lucky: in December every facade was decorated and lit.

Some people call Riquewihr overrated. We disagree; it really does look like a dream town. The village has kept most of its 16th-century appearance and was one of the few in the area to come through the Second World War without heavy damage (English Wikipedia).

Riquewihr and Beauty and the Beast: travel writers often name Riquewihr as a model for Belle’s village in Disney’s 1991 film, and nearby Ribeauvillé is mentioned too. We could not find any statement from Disney confirming it, so treat it as a popular story rather than a fact.

3

The lower village and its little market

cheese counters below the main street

Open most daysSwiss and Alsatian cheese

Down at the bottom of the village we found a small market that, we were told, sets up almost every day. Alsace sits where France, Germany and Switzerland meet, so Swiss cheeses share the counters with local ones.

The pastry shops are on these streets too; our sweet stop is in the food section below.

When is the Riquewihr Christmas market in 2026?

Friday 27 November to Sunday 20 December

The Christmas market in Riquewihr opens on Friday 27 November 2026 and closes on Sunday 20 December, running daily in between. Weekday hours are 10am to 6.30pm; on Saturdays and Sundays it stays open until 7pm. That means the stalls are gone before Christmas Eve, so a trip between 21 and 31 December finds the lights but no market (noel-colmar.com ).

The same page also lists one late opening until 8pm on “Friday 28th Nov”, a date that falls on a Saturday in 2026; check with the tourist office before planning around it.

The stalls line the main street and the lanes around it, inside the medieval walls. The official site describes thousands of lights, decorated streets and illuminated facades and monuments (noel-colmar.com).

When we came in December 2023 the whole village glowed, and a small market with cheese counters was set up in the lower town (4:10 in our video). The Riquewihr tourist office desk is at 2 Rue de la 1ère Armée.

For decorations, Féerie de Noël at 1 Rue du Cerf is the Riquewihr branch of the German Christmas-ornament chain Käthe Wohlfahrt and is open all year: weekdays 10am to 12.30pm and 1.45pm to 6.30pm, weekends 10am to 6.45pm (kaethe-wohlfahrt.com).

To eat, look for bredele (small Alsatian Christmas biscuits), kougelhopf (a ring cake with raisins) and pain d’épices (spiced gingerbread) at the stalls and bakeries. We had a pretzel and the marshmallow treats described in the food section.

Shuttle

Christmas shuttle bus from Colmar to Riquewihr

lines 1 and 2 via Kaysersberg and Ribeauvillé

Fridays and weekends only€17 day ticket

Two loop lines from Colmar station stop in Riquewihr: line 1 runs Colmar, Kaysersberg, Riquewihr, Ribeauvillé and back to Colmar, and line 2 does the same loop the other way round. In 2026 they run between 27 November and 20 December, but only on Fridays (hourly), Saturdays and Sundays (every 30 minutes); there is no service on these lines from Monday to Thursday.

A day ticket costs €17 per adult with unlimited rides, children under 12 travel free, and online sales open on Thursday 12 November 2026 at noon CET (noel-colmar.com ).

Park

Driving? Use the park-and-ride

The “Perles de Noël” park-and-ride for Riquewihr is the Naturoparc car park on Route de Ribeauvillé in Hunawihr, with 220 spaces. It opens on four weekends in 2026: 28 and 29 November, then 5 and 6, 12 and 13, 19 and 20 December.

One €10 fee per vehicle covers parking and the shuttle for everyone in the car, and buses leave every half hour from 9.45am to 6.30pm (noel-colmar.com).

Stay

Where to stay for the Christmas market

inside the walls, or in Colmar

December weekends sell out early

Stay inside the walls if you want the village after the day-trippers leave and the lights come on. If you plan to ride the shuttle to several markets, Colmar station is the better base. Our where-to-stay section further down compares four bases and names a few hotels inside and outside the walls.

How to Get to Riquewihr: Bus from Colmar, Trains from Strasbourg and Basel

By Air

The nearest airport to Riquewihr is Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg EuroAirport (BSL), about an hour away by car. It has flights from across Europe; we flew in there ourselves for our Alsace Christmas trip. Strasbourg airport is the other option for northern Alsace. Compare flights to Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg airport  Ad

EuroAirport is shared by France, Switzerland and Germany. Leave through the French side: bus 11 (Distribus) runs to Saint-Louis station, where trains leave for Colmar (euroairport.com).

By Train

Riquewihr has no railway station; the closest one is Colmar. From Basel there are around 20 trains a day to Colmar, 11 of them direct, and the fastest takes 37 minutes (Omio, October 2026). See Basel to Colmar train times  Ad

Strasbourg to Riquewihr: take a regional train to Colmar (or Sélestat), then the bus. See Strasbourg to Colmar train times  Ad

Colmar to Riquewihr by bus: regular service is Fluo line 816 (Colmar, Riquewihr, Ribeauvillé centre). Buses are infrequent, so note the last return before you set off; timetables can be downloaded from the Fluo journey planner and the tourist offices’ Christmas site (noel-colmar.com).

On Sundays and public holidays a TER coach also links Sélestat, Ribeauvillé and Riquewihr. During Advent the Christmas shuttle adds Friday and weekend buses; see the Christmas section.

By Car

The old town is pedestrian, so a car only helps if you want to string several Alsace villages into one day. Colmar to Riquewihr is roughly 14 km, about 15 minutes by road (rome2rio, October 2026).

Our own tour went on from Riquewihr to Kaysersberg and finished in Colmar. On Christmas weekends use the park-and-ride described in the Christmas section. Compare car hire in Colmar  Ad

Where to Stay in Riquewihr: Inside the Walls, Outside, Nearby Villages or Colmar

Riquewihr has four practical bases: the old town inside the walls, a few hotels with parking just outside, neighbouring villages such as Ribeauvillé and Mittelwihr, and Colmar for anyone arriving by train. We didn't sleep in Riquewihr; our tour arrived early in the morning. The choice below is based on location.

Village at dawn and after dark: inside the walls. Driving: just outside the walls with parking, or a neighbouring village. Train travellers touring several villages: Colmar. We didn’t stay overnight, so this is based on location. Riquewihr hotels are few and December weekends fill months ahead.

Before the crowdsFew rooms

Best for: seeing the village early in the morning and after the lights come on, when the day-trip coaches have gone.

Keep in mind: rooms are few and go first in Advent. Old buildings often mean steep stairs and small rooms; if you drive, ask the hotel about parking.

2

Just outside the walls, with parking

Arriving by carWalk in

Best for: drivers, and anyone with big luggage who would rather skip narrow medieval staircases.

Keep in mind: the choice is small. On Christmas weekends the village car parks fill up, so leaving the car at the hotel and walking in is easier.

3

Neighbouring villages

Ribeauvillé, Hunawihr, Mittelwihr

A few minutes by carRibeauvillé is on the shuttle loop

Best for: drivers who can’t find a room in Riquewihr and want to see more than one village market. Ribeauvillé is on the Christmas shuttle loop and on regular bus line 816 from Colmar.

Keep in mind: evenings in Riquewihr mean driving back or catching the shuttle.

4

Colmar

Trains from Basel and StrasbourgShuttle starts here

Best for: arriving by train and visiting Riquewihr and Kaysersberg as day trips. Far more rooms and price levels, and the Christmas shuttle leaves from Colmar station.

Keep in mind: Colmar is just as busy in December; book early.

Per person, per day. Food included; accommodation and flights not.

Sources: the shuttle fare from noel-colmar.com; meals from Numbeo’s Colmar data (May 2025: inexpensive restaurant meal €15, mid-range dinner for two €60); the guided tour from GetYourGuide (from $146, about €130 at the ECB rate of €1 = $1.1225 on 2 October 2026). Meal and tour prices

Riquewihr itself costs nothing to explore: the village, the Dolder from outside and the Christmas market are all free. Your money goes on food, transport and tours. We confirmed the shuttle fare on 31 October 2026 and looked up everything else on 3 October 2026.

Getting around: on foot. The Colmar connection is in the getting-there section and the Christmas shuttle fare in the Christmas section.

Tickets and tours: none of the four stops in our video charges entry. Without a car, day tours from Colmar and Strasbourg cover several villages; the link is in the first sight card.

Food: a pastry and a street pretzel are the quickest, cheapest snacks; restaurants are full in Advent, so book or eat early.

Free: the Christmas market, the main street and the outside of the Dolder, the lit lanes, the little market in the lower town and the back lanes.

What to Eat in Riquewihr: Pretzels, Pastries and Tarte Flambée

2 food stops

Alsace’s best-known dishes: thin, crisp tarte flambée, kougelhopf ring cake with raisins, bredele biscuits sold at Christmas, and the bretzel (pretzel) it shares with Germany. What we tried: two marshmallow treats from a sweet shop and a sesame and poppy-seed pretzel on the street. What we didn’t try this time: tarte flambée, kougelhopf and the cheeses, so we don’t describe them as if we had. Riquewihr restaurants serving these dishes fill up fast in Advent; book a table or eat lunch early.

Food

What we ate in Riquewihr

two stops · in video order

The classic tarte flambée (flammekueche) is topped with bacon lardons; if you don’t eat pork, ask for a vegetarian or cheese version when you order.

Chocolate-coated marshmallow treats

Two flavours triedWafer base

While wandering we found a sweet shop with trays of chocolate-coated marshmallow treats and ordered two: one rolled in crunchy croquant, one plain chocolate. Each sits on a thin sweet wafer.

Honestly, there wasn’t much difference between them, and both were a little too sweet for us. The pastries in Riquewihr are very good, though, so a sweet stop is worth it.

2

A pretzel on the street: sesame and poppy seed

the bread that crosses borders

Eaten standing upCrisp crust

Alsace shares the pretzel (bretzel) with Germany, so we bought one topped with sesame and poppy seeds. Crisp outside, soft inside, exactly as it should be.

When I did my internship in Germany we had one every morning. In Riquewihr we carried on walking, pretzel in hand.

Things to Know Before Visiting Riquewihr

Before

Things to know before visiting Riquewihr

six points

Crowds, market dates and the bus back are the three things that change a plan most. For this year’s market dates, scroll to the Christmas guide further down.

1

Come early; it still gets busy

the streets fill towards midday

Weekends are busiest

We arrived early in the morning and the village was already packed. Do the main street first for photos, then slip into the back lanes when the coaches arrive.

2

The market closes before Christmas

last day in 2026: 20 December

Dates below

Riquewihr’s market ends on 20 December, a few days before Christmas. Come later in December and you’ll still see the decorations, but the stalls will have gone.

3

Buses are sparse: plan the return

no train station in the village

Line 816 from Colmar

Regular bus 816 from Colmar runs only a handful of times a day, so check the last bus before you leave. In Advent the shuttle adds more buses from Friday to Sunday.

4

Signs are hard to read

French, German and Alsatian mixed together

German-sounding names

We struggled with the street signs: this is where France, Germany and Switzerland blend, and most names have German roots. Download an offline map before you go.

5

December cold and cobblestones

Colmar average: 0.2 to 6.3 °C

Non-slip bootsGloves and hat

Riquewihr weather in winter follows Colmar’s long-term record: in Météo-France’s 1991-2020 averages, December nights drop to 0.2 °C and days reach 6.3 °C (via Wikipedia). Wet cobbles are slippery, so bring boots with grip, a warm coat and gloves.
