Obernai, France: Things to Do, Christmas Market 2026 and Where to Stay

SchengenFranceCity guide

Obernai, France, is a small Alsace town about 25 km south-west of Strasbourg, half an hour away by train. Its Place du Marché, the Kappelturm belfry, the Halle aux Blés and the ramparts take a few hours on foot. We stopped here by day on our Alsace Christmas trip, on the way to Strasbourg, without staying the night. Below: things to do, the 2026 Christmas market, a daily budget and where to stay.

Obernai old town: half-timbered houses and cobbled lanes

our stop on the road to Strasbourg

On footFree

Obernai was the surprise stop on our way to Strasbourg. Like the Alsace villages we had seen the day before, it is small, tidy and calm: painted half-timbered houses, cobbled lanes and one main square ringed by cafés. Everything is within walking distance.

What we liked most was how well the old fabric has been kept. Obernai became a town around 1240 and a free imperial city around 1280 (fr.wikipedia.org).

Place du Marché and the Christmas stalls

the main square

Free to enterCafés and pastry shops

In December the square fills with wooden chalets selling small gifts, tree decorations, pastries and sweets. We walked the stalls one by one, looking at the cured meats and the confectionery. As we say in the video, the town is known for its charcuterie.

Cafés and pâtisseries line the square, so a coffee at a window table is the easiest way to watch it. Market dates, hours and squares are in the Christmas section below.

3

Kappelturm (the Beffroi): the town’s belfry

Place du Beffroi, home of the tourist office

Seen from the square59.60 m

Whichever lane you leave the square by, this pointed tower stays in view; it is the easiest landmark for finding your way back. The tourist office says it served as the town belfry and watchtower and as the bell tower of a medieval chapel to the Virgin.

The chapel was pulled down in the 19th century, but its Gothic choir still stands. The tip of the spire is 59.60 m up.

In December the miniature Christmas village exhibition opens in the Beffroi hall right beside it; hours are in the Christmas section.

Town hall and the Six-Bucket Well (Puits aux Six Seaux)

FreeWell from 1579

The painted town hall (Hôtel de Ville) fills one side of Place du Marché and is the most photographed corner of the square. According to the tourist office, it keeps traces of the arcaded building where the medieval town court sat. On each of the first 24 evenings of December a light show is projected onto this façade.

A few steps away stands the Six-Bucket Well, the prettiest photo stop on the square: three columns hold up an eight-sided carved canopy. Strasbourg craftsmen made it in the Renaissance, and it was once painted (tourisme-obernai.fr).

Halle aux Blés and a walk along the ramparts

the old butchers’ hall and the wall promenade

FreeInner wall 1,400 m

Walk past the Halle aux Blés and look up at its gabled front: two carved cattle heads flank the town’s coat of arms, a clue that this Renaissance hall began life as the public butchers’ market.

The inner wall around the old town runs for 1,400 m and once had about twenty towers and four gates. The broad terrace in front of it is now a promenade (tourisme-obernai.fr), a good loop when the market gets crowded.

The tourist office presents the hilltop convent as one of the great pilgrimage sites of Alsace. You can see the tomb of Saint Odile, the Chapel of Tears and the Chapel of Angels, and a terrace with a view across the Alsace plain; the spring said to heal is a 15-minute walk away.

The Mur Païen, an ancient wall of about 300,000 large stone blocks and up to 3 m high, rings the plateau for 11 km. Fluo regional buses run from Obernai to the summit (tourisme-obernai.fr). We did not go up ourselves.

According to the tourist office, 45 chalets are spread over five squares, led by Place du Marché, Place du Beffroi, Place de l’Étoile and Place Neher. All are a few minutes’ walk apart.

The market was still open when we arrived. Like the villages we had seen the day before, it is small; nothing like the crowds and noise of a big-city market.

With children: the Christmas train and a treasure hunt

a first for 2026

From 28 NovemberWednesday to Sunday 14:30-18:30

For the first time, the little tourist train runs in Christmas lights. From 28 November it leaves hourly from 14:30 to 18:30, Wednesday to Sunday, from the forecourt of Saints-Pierre-et-Paul church; no service on 25 December. The ride climbs to the Mont National viewpoint above the town.

The tourist office’s Christmas treasure hunt is a 2 km walk of riddles and clues that takes about an hour and a half (tourisme-obernai.fr, 31 October 2026).

By train, Obernai station is about 500 m from Place du Marché; times are in the getting there section. On market weekends free Pass’O shuttles run to the centre from car parks on the edge of town and from the VVF holiday village. The timetable is under “Infos Navettes de Noël” on the tourist office’s Christmas page.

7

Where to stay for the Christmas market

a small town that fills early

Weekends fill firstPlan B: Strasbourg

Obernai is small, so free rooms get scarce on market weekends. Areas and hotels are in the where to stay section below; if the town is full, stay in Strasbourg and come over by train.

Both markets fit in one day: Obernai’s little square in the morning, Strasbourg’s lit streets in the evening. That is how we did it. In our long Alsace Christmas vlog, the Obernai part starts at 53:37 .

How to Get to Obernai: Strasbourg Train and Basel Airport

By Air

Flying in: Obernai has no airport. The closest ones are Strasbourg-Entzheim (SXB) and EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg (BSL), which has far more international routes and is where our Alsace trip began. Long-haul travellers often land in Paris and take a direct TGV from Paris Gare de l’Est to Strasbourg. Compare flights to Basel-Mulhouse  Ad

EuroAirport to Obernai: leave by the French exit. Distribus bus 11 reaches Saint-Louis station in 10 to 15 minutes, every 15 to 30 minutes between 05:00 and midnight, and direct trains run from Saint-Louis to Strasbourg every half hour (euroairport.com, October 2026).

The fastest Basel to Strasbourg train takes 1 hour 5 minutes (Omio, October 2026). Change at Strasbourg for Obernai. Check Basel to Strasbourg train times  Ad

By Train

Strasbourg to Obernai by TER train takes 28 minutes at best, 34 on average, with no change; fares from €4 (Omio, October 2026). From Obernai station it is about 500 m on foot to Place du Marché. There is no direct train from Obernai to Colmar; with one change the fastest trip is 47 minutes, fares from €12 (Omio, October 2026). Check Strasbourg to Obernai train times  Ad

By Car

You don’t need a car in Obernai; the old town is walkable. A car helps for Alsace villages the train skips and for Haut-Kœnigsbourg castle. On market weekends free Pass’O shuttles run from car parks on the edge of town; see the Christmas section.

Where to Stay in Obernai: Areas and Hotels

Obernai has three areas to stay: around Place du Marché inside the walls, near the station and the edge of town with parking, or Strasbourg, half an hour away by train. Below them are the named Obernai hotels people search for, plus apartments. We didn't stay overnight; we passed through by day on the way to Strasbourg.

What to Eat in Obernai: Charcuterie, Flammekueche and Bredele

Obernai eats like the rest of Alsace, a mix of French and German tables. In the video we mention that the town is known for its charcuterie. We didn’t sit down for a meal here; we walked the stalls, so the cards below say what the town is known for and where you find it.

1

Which exit at EuroAirport?

an airport with two countries’ exits

French sideEuro and Swiss franc

EuroAirport has separate French and Swiss exits. For Obernai, leave on the French side, where the Saint-Louis bus starts. Basel itself uses the Swiss franc; Alsace uses the euro.

2

Do you need a visa for Obernai?

France is in the Schengen area

Schengen rulesEES: fingerprints and photo

No special permit exists for Obernai: arriving in Alsace means entering France, so your passport decides whether a short-stay Schengen visa is needed. Check france-visas.gouv.fr, the French government’s official visa site, before booking.

The EU Entry/Exit System has been fully in use since 10 April 2026: non-EU travellers give fingerprints and a facial image at their first border check (travel-europe.europa.eu).

December average 0.8 / 5.9 °CNon-slip soles

At Strasbourg-Entzheim, the nearest weather station, December averages a low of 0.8 °C and a high of 5.9 °C (1991-2020 normals). Obernai’s lanes and square are cobbled and get slippery when wet, and a market visit means hours on your feet: wear waterproof shoes with good grip.

Yes, especially in December. It is small enough to see in half a day, the train from Strasbourg is quick, and the Christmas market is calmer than the big-city ones. We liked how well the old town has been kept.

What time zone is Obernai in?

Obernai runs on Paris time (CET), so in winter it is UTC+1 and in summer UTC+2. France turned its clocks back on 25 October 2026.
