Things to Do in Essen, Germany 2026: Christmas Market, Zollverein and Getting There

SchengenGermanyCity guide

Where is Essen, Germany? It sits in the heart of the Ruhr, the old coal and steel region of North Rhine-Westphalia in the west of the country, and Düsseldorf is less than half an hour away by train. The city grew rich on coal and steel, and its former colliery, Zollverein, is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In winter an international Christmas market fills the centre. We came on a day trip by train from Düsseldorf in November 2025. Below are the best things to do in Essen from our video, eight stops in all, the potato fritter we tried at the market, the Essen Christmas market 2026 dates, a daily budget and where to stay.

Things to Do in Essen, Germany: Zollverein, Villa Hügel and Baldeneysee

8 stops
City

The eight stops in our video

in video order · blue cards are outside the centre

The white cards are in the centre, a short walk from each other. For the blue cards (Zollverein, Baldeneysee, Villa Hügel, Grugapark) you need a tram, the U-Bahn or an S-Bahn train.

1

Zeche Zollverein: the coal mine on the UNESCO list

Gelsenkirchener Straße, north of the centre

Ruhr Museum €10Daily 10:00-18:00

For us, this is what makes Essen special: the city did not erase its past, it turned an old coal mine into a centre for culture and art. You wander between red brick halls, steel headframes and the old plant buildings of this former coal mine industrial complex.

The Ruhr Museum, in the old coal washing plant, is open daily from 10:00 to 18:00 and closed on 24, 25 and 31 December. The permanent exhibition costs €10, or €15 for all exhibitions. Tram 107 runs from Essen Hbf to the Zollverein stop, and the museum is a 4-minute walk from there (ruhrmuseum.de, October 2026).

2

Baldeneysee: a lake on the Ruhr

south of the city, between Essen-Werden and Essen-Hügel

FreeWalking and cycling

For an industrial city, Essen turned out to be far greener than we expected. Along the lake there is plenty of open space for walks and bike rides.

3

Kennedyplatz and the Christmas market

city centre, on foot from the Hbf

Walk from the HbfThe main market is here

As soon as you leave the train station, little Christmas markets begin; the big one fills the main square, and it is ringed by more small markets. After the small ones, seeing the big one made us very happy.

A giant crown of lights hangs over the square. Dates, hours, the lights and where the market stands are in the Christmas section below.

4

Villa Hügel: the Krupp family home

Hügel 1, on the hill above the Baldeneysee

Entry €8Free on the first Friday of the month

The former home of the Krupp industrial dynasty, and a real history stop. The interior is very well preserved and the grounds are huge; the higher you climb, the wider the view over the city. A good choice for a quiet stroll.

Entry is €8, or €5 reduced; the ticket covers the park, and you can visit the houses when they are open. Entry is free on the first Friday of every month. Opening hours change with the season; on 3 October 2026 the park was open 9:30-19:00 and the main house 10:00-18:00 (villahuegel.de).

5

Grugapark: a big park inside the city

Rüttenscheid, 3.5 km southwest of the centre

About 60 hectaresAdmission charged

Much bigger than your usual city park, with walking paths, ponds and flower gardens. Perfect if you want a breath of fresh air without leaving town.

The park covers about 60 hectares (grugapark.de). There is an admission charge; we couldn’t verify the current price, so check the park’s website before you go.

6

Museum Folkwang

Museumsplatz 1, south of the centre

Collection freeClosed Mondays

For art lovers, the strongest stop in Essen. Inside there is modern art as well as classic works, and the building itself is elegant and full of light.

The permanent collection has been free since summer 2015, and this was made permanent (Krupp Foundation announcement, 2020); temporary exhibitions need a ticket.

Folkwang opens at 10:00 and stays open until 20:00 on Thursdays and Fridays and until 18:00 on the other opening days. It is closed on Mondays and on 24, 25 and 31 December (museum-folkwang.de, October 2026).

7

Essen Cathedral and the Golden Madonna

Burgplatz, in the middle of the shopping streets

Golden MadonnaA quick visit

If you are walking around the centre, you will almost certainly pass it. It doesn’t take long to see, but it has a lovely historic atmosphere.

8

Old Synagogue: House of Jewish Culture

Edmund-Körner-Platz, near the town hall

House of Jewish CultureWalking distance from the cathedral

The Alte Synagoge looks striking from outside. Once you step in, both the architecture and its story give you a lot to think about.

Today it is used as the House of Jewish Culture (Haus jüdischer Kultur); we couldn’t verify the visiting hours.

How to Get to Essen: Nearest Airports, Flights and Trains

By Air

Essen has no airport with scheduled passenger flights of its own, so for flights to Essen, Germany, the easiest choice is Düsseldorf Airport (DUS), about 30 km away. From the terminal, the SkyTrain takes you to the airport railway station, and regional trains reach Essen Hbf in about 25 minutes (uni-due.de).

If you are flying in from outside Europe, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, London and Paris all have connecting flights to Düsseldorf. The smaller Dortmund Airport is another option if the dates and fares suit you.

By Train

From Düsseldorf to Essen the fastest train takes 22 minutes and the average is 26 minutes; there are 8 direct trains a day, with tickets from €2 (Omio, October 2026). Step off at the Hbf and you are right in the city centre. Düsseldorf to Essen train times and fares  Ad

From Essen, the fastest train to Dortmund takes 21 minutes, and Cologne is 57 minutes away on average (Omio, October 2026). Links are in the side column.

By Car

The centre is easy on foot, and Zollverein and Grugapark are on public transport, so driving in town is pointless. Renting one is worth it only to link up Villa Hügel, the Baldeneysee and other Ruhr cities in a single day. See Essen car rental prices  Ad

Areas to Stay in Essen at a Glance

There are two ways to stay for Essen: the city centre around the Hbf and the Christmas market, or Düsseldorf, half an hour away by train, if you want to see several Ruhr and Rhine markets on the same trip.

Essen was a day trip from our Düsseldorf base, the Garner Hotel Düsseldorf Main Station; we went there and back by train. Our where to stay in Essen  guide compares five neighbourhoods, fair weeks and train times from Düsseldorf.

Choice

Where to stay in Essen

two options · decide in 30 seconds

Wake up next to the market: central Essen. See the markets of several cities: Düsseldorf. Book early for the Christmas season.

1

Central Essen

around the Hbf, Kennedyplatz and the cathedral

Walk to the marketZollverein tram from the Hbf

Best for: anyone who wants to walk back to the hotel from the market in the evening. The cathedral, the Old Synagogue and Kennedyplatz are all within walking distance, and the tram to Zollverein leaves from the Hbf.

Keep in mind: the streets around Kennedyplatz are noisy on Christmas evenings; ask for a room at the back.

2

Düsseldorf

on the Rhine, close to the airport

Close to the airportMore hotels to choose from

Best for: combining Essen with the Düsseldorf, Cologne and Dortmund markets, or flying in and out of Düsseldorf Airport.

Keep in mind: you will spend half an hour on the train to Essen each morning and again each evening.

What we did: no night in Essen for us; a day train brought us over from our Düsseldorf hotel (Garner Hotel Düsseldorf Main Station).

Is Essen Expensive? Daily Budget 2026

On a Budget
40-€50

Enough for a 24-hour transit pass and two cheap sit-down meals, with free sights filling the rest of the day: the Christmas market, the Museum Folkwang collection, the cathedral and the Baldeneysee shore.

Mid-Range
80-€95

The Ruhr Museum and Villa Hügel, a 24-hour ticket, a simple lunch and dinner at a mid-range restaurant. A classic day in Essen falls in this range.

Luxury
110-€125

All the Ruhr Museum exhibitions, Villa Hügel, two mid-range restaurant meals, a coffee break and public transport. Sit-down meals are the biggest cost driver here.

Every figure covers one traveller for a single day. Meals are in; rooms and flights are out.

Admissions and transport are taken from official tariffs (ruhrmuseum.de, villahuegel.de, vrr.de), and food costs from Numbeo’s Essen prices (updated 2 October 2026), since there is no official food tariff.

Like the other Ruhr cities, Essen is about average for Germany. The figures below come from official tariffs and Numbeo

Getting around: on the tariff in force from 1 June 2026, a single ticket within the city (zone A) costs €3.80, a 4-trip ticket €15.20 and a 24-hour ticket €7.60; the monthly Deutschlandticket is €63 (vrr.de). If you are going to Zollverein, Grugapark and Villa Hügel, the 24-hour ticket makes more sense.

Admissions and tours: prices are on the place cards. The Ruhr Museum and Villa Hügel together come to €18. Check current Essen tour and ticket prices  Ad

Food: a meal at an inexpensive restaurant costs about €18 per person, and a three-course meal for two at a mid-range restaurant about €77.50, drinks not included (Numbeo, 2 October 2026).

Free: the Christmas market and the lights, Museum Folkwang’s permanent collection, Essen Cathedral, the Baldeneysee shore, and Villa Hügel on the first Friday of the month.

What to Eat in Essen: Potato Fritters and Christmas Market Treats

1 food stop

The Ruhr’s Christmas market classics: Reibekuchen, potato fritters eaten with apple sauce, sugar-roasted almonds, waffles and Christmas biscuits. Classic German sausages are on sale at every market too. What we tried: potato fritters with apple sauce. Market treats we skipped in Essen: roasted almonds and Christmas biscuits.

Served with apple sauce

We found these at the market: fried patties of grated potato with the traditional side of apple sauce. They taste good, not bad at all; but to be honest, you won’t miss much if you skip them.

A giant crown of lights hangs above the market; in the video we said it has more than 100,000 lights, but we couldn’t verify an official figure. Once the evening lights go on, the Essen market sparkles from end to end.

At the same time, the streets of the city centre are decorated for the Essen Light Weeks (Essener Lichtwochen).

The 2026 Light Weeks run from 25 October 2026 to 2 January 2027, with animal-shaped light sculptures on Kettwiger Straße, Willy-Brandt-Platz and nearby, and arches of light along the street (festivalsindeutschland.de). The lights stay on after the market closes.
