Striezelmarkt Dresden
Germany's Oldest Christmas Market
The Striezelmarkt has been held since 1434, and the city presents it as the oldest Christmas market in Germany; 2026 is the 592nd edition. Entry is free. The official site counts more than 200 stalls, a 14.61 metre Erzgebirge step pyramid billed as the largest in the world, a walk-through Schwibbogen (a lit wooden candle arch) and a historic Ferris wheel.
This year's tree is a 23 metre Nordmann fir from Pirna, and the lights get a test run on 20 November, five days before opening (striezelmarkt.dresden.de). Locals call strolling round the market in Advent striezeln.
More about this market
Our experience: the Prague bus dropped us outside the main station, and on the short walk up to Altmarkt we passed a few small Christmas markets before reaching the big one.
On Altmarkt the huge tree and the wooden pyramid stand in the middle, ringed by decorated huts, and the air smells of cinnamon and vanilla. By evening it was hard to move between the stalls. Of all the Christmas markets we had filmed so far, none was bigger or prettier. Watch in the video · 2:48
