Strasbourg Christmas Market 2026: Dates, Hours and All 8 Markets

The Strasbourg Christmas market 2026 opens on Friday 27 November and runs to Thursday 24 December, daily from 11:00 to 21:00, across eight markets in the Grande Île old town. The oldest, the Christkindelsmärik on Place Broglie, dates from 1570 according to the official site; the Great Christmas Tree stands on Place Kléber. We spent the last evening of our Alsace Christmas trip walking between them.

Where Is the Strasbourg Christmas Market? Location and Map

The Strasbourg Christmas market is not a single square but eight markets spread across the Grande Île, the island old town wrapped by the river Ill, plus its edges. Place Broglie, the cathedral squares, Place Kléber, Place du Temple Neuf, the Rohan terrace by the river, La Petite France, Square Louise Weiss and Place Grimmeissen are all a few minutes apart on foot (noel.strasbourg.eu).

From the main station the first chalets are about ten minutes' walk along a signed pedestrian route; tram lines A, C, D and F also stop close to the squares. On a map, the cathedral sits in the middle: Broglie to the north, Kléber to the west, La Petite France at the western tip.

The official tip: climb the 332 steps to the cathedral platform, 66 m up, for the view over the market roofs.

Our experience: we walked up Rue Mercière from the car park and the facade appeared at the end of the street, framed by Christmas decorations. We went inside too; entry was free.

Our experience: after the Apple Store and Fnac on the square, we sat with a coffee under the tree on our last evening of the trip; once the lights came on, it was the busiest square of all.

Strasbourg Christmas Market Food and What to Buy

Bredele: small spiced Alsatian Christmas biscuits, sold by the box; the bakers' stalls at the Quai des Délices are the official place for them.

Pain d'épices: honey spice bread, a gift that survives the flight home.

Bretzel and tarte flambée: the warm pretzel and Alsace's thin cream-and-onion tart are the easiest things to eat while you walk.

Hot drinks: served in a reusable cup with a €1 deposit; hand it back at any drinks chalet for your euro, or drop it in a charity bin and the euro goes to a Strasbourg charity (official FAQ).

To take home: wooden decorations, candles, jams and chocolate from the small producers, and Alsace pottery. Food details are on our Strasbourg food section .

Getting to the Strasbourg Christmas Market and Around It

From the station: follow the signed walking route from the forecourt; the first chalets are about ten minutes away. Tram lines A, C, D and F stop near the market squares.

By car: while the chalets are open, motor vehicles stay off the island and staff check access on the bridges. Leave the car at a P+R site on the edge of town: €4.20 buys a day's parking plus the tram there and back for all on board (official FAQ). We left ours outside the old town and walked.

Bikes and scooters: banned on the market squares between 11:00 and 21:00.

From further away: TGV from Paris Gare de l'Est takes about 1 hour 46 minutes; regional trains from Basel 75 to 90 minutes.

Staying Overnight: Which Part of Strasbourg for the Markets

Sleep on the island and you stroll back to bed when the last chalet closes at 21:00, but those rooms disappear first.

Near the station you are ten minutes from the first stalls and right by the trains for Colmar; the EU district and Kehl, the German town over the Rhine, cost less and are linked by tram. Our Strasbourg hotel guide  lines up each area with its prices.

Before You Go: Strasbourg Christmas Market Tips

Reserve first: the canal boats were sold out for weeks when we asked on the day, and tables were hard to find in the evening. Sort out cruises, dinners and rooms online before you leave. Watch in the video · 4:56

Timing: come on a Monday or Tuesday, or in the first hours after 11:00; the organisers flag Wednesday afternoons, Friday evenings and weekends as the most crowded.

Paying: almost every chalet takes cards, but cash machines on the island get long queues, so bring some cash before crossing the bridges.

Christmas week: the market closes for good at 18:00 on 24 December.

Entry rules: France belongs to Schengen, so the paperwork for a December trip to Alsace hinges on the passport you hold; our Schengen visa guide  sets out who must apply.
