France Hotels: Where to Stay in France, from Alsace to Paris (2026)

Where to stay in France on an Alsace trip, and which France hotels to pick: base yourself in Strasbourg or Colmar and see Obernai, Riquewihr and Kaysersberg as day trips. We toured all five and Haut-Kœnigsbourg Castle in December 2023 without sleeping in Strasbourg or Colmar, so the areas come from our walks and the scores from Booking. We have not been to Paris. Decide First: Which Area Suits You?

The best places to stay in France for this trip depend on how you travel, so we split it into four situations; jump to the card under the one that matches yours.

  • Arriving by train and seeing several places: the Strasbourg card; trains to Colmar, Obernai and Basel use the same station.
  • Staying in one small town: the Colmar card; the old town and Little Venice run into each other.
  • Driving and after quiet evenings: the Alsace villages card; Riquewihr and Kaysersberg have few rooms.
  • Coming from Paris: the Paris card; Gare de l'Est puts the Strasbourg train a walk away.

France Hotels by Area: Strasbourg, Colmar, the Alsace Villages and Paris

4 areas

Four areas side by side. Strasbourg, Colmar and the villages come from our December 2023 trip; we have not been to Paris. Journey times are the quickest scheduled options, rounded (Omio and Fluo Grand Est, October 2026; the Paris train on 31 October 2026); confirm departures with the operator.

Strasbourg Hotels

Grande Île and La Petite France

On the final day of our Alsace tour we drove into Strasbourg, parked, and covered the cathedral, La Petite France and Kléber on foot; the island is small enough that we never needed a tram. For a first visit, or to wake up among the Christmas markets, stay on the Grande Île.

La Petite France gives you canal views and slightly calmer evenings. Arriving by train with luggage? The station area is practical, and the first market stalls are about a 10 minute walk along a signposted route (noel.strasbourg.eu). All five areas, including the European Quarter and Kehl across the border, have a guide of their own.

  • The largest city in Alsace; the cathedral, Place Kléber and La Petite France share one island
  • Booking treats the cathedral area and La Petite France as a single district, "City Centre - Petite France - Cathedral"
  • 1 hour 45 minutes from Paris Gare de l'Est on the fastest TGV (Omio)

Best for: First visits, rail travellers, walking to the Christmas markets

Getting there: About 1 hour 45 minutes from Paris by TGV; 25 minutes to Colmar by train

Good to know: drivers lose access to the island during market hours, so settle the parking question with your hotel first.

Colmar Hotels

the Old Town and Little Venice

We did not stay overnight in Colmar: we reached town in the evening after Riquewihr and Kaysersberg and filmed the line of boats on the canal and the crowd outside Au Vieux Pignon. First time here? Pick Little Venice or the old-town streets right above it; they merge into one walkable area with every market a few minutes away.

In December these two are the priciest and the first to sell out. Rail travellers on a budget should look around the station, about 15 minutes' walk from the Dominicans market.

  • Little Venice, known for the half-timbered houses along the Lauch, sits at the southern tip of the old town
  • Basel is 37 minutes away on the quickest train (Omio, October 2026)
  • Six separate Christmas markets, all inside the old town (noel-colmar.com)

Best for: A small canal town and its evening lights

Getting there: The shortest Basel train is 37 minutes; village buses start in Colmar

Alsace Villages Hotels

Obernai, Riquewihr and Kaysersberg

Obernai was a daytime stop on our drive north to Strasbourg, with no overnight. Riquewihr was a morning visit on a tour, with Kaysersberg straight after; Haut-Kœnigsbourg Castle stands on the same Vosges slopes. A village night means seeing the ramparts and the stone bridge lit up once the day crowds leave.

The price is scarcity: when we looked on 15 October 2026, the second Tuesday night of December had only 12 free places in Kaysersberg and 15 in Riquewihr. Without a car, Obernai is the easier pick, a direct 28 minute TER ride from Strasbourg.

  • Alsace lies in the north-eastern corner of France, on the west bank of the Rhine with Germany on the far shore
  • 8,580 properties across the whole Alsace region on Booking
  • Riquewihr and Kaysersberg have no railway; from the Colmar Théâtre stop, Fluo line 813 reaches Kaysersberg in roughly 29 minutes

Best for: Drivers who want a quiet village evening

Getting there: Obernai is 28 minutes from Strasbourg by TER; Kaysersberg about 29 minutes from Colmar on bus 813

Where to Stay in Paris

Hotels by Gare de l'Est (We Have Not Been)

Paris, France hotels draw far more searches than anywhere else in the country, so a France page without Paris would leave most readers short. Our French trip stayed in Alsace; we have not spent a night in Paris and suggest no districts or hotels here. Where to stay in Paris for a first time is therefore a question we cannot answer from experience.

What we can offer is the rail link: if Alsace comes next, the Strasbourg trains leave from Gare de l'Est, and a hotel within walking distance of it makes the morning departure painless. For cheap hotels in Paris, sort Booking's Paris list by price and check the walk to the nearest metro stop.

  • The capital; 13,244 properties in Paris on Booking
  • 4,069 properties listed near Gare de l'Est (Booking, 31 October 2026)
  • Strasbourg is 1 hour 45 minutes away on the fastest TGV (Omio, 31 October 2026)

Best for: Pairing the capital with Alsace; we have not been

Getting there: Strasbourg trains leave from Gare de l'Est, 397 km away

Apartments, Guesthouses and Hostels in Strasbourg and Colmar

In the Christmas weeks most free beds in Alsace are not in hotels. A search we ran on 15 October 2026 for Tuesday 8 December found 200 open properties in Strasbourg, only 42 of them hotels; in Colmar, 82 of the 120 free places were apartments.

Which Suits Whom

  • Apartment: families staying three nights or more who want a kitchen. If you usually book on Airbnb, Booking's apartment list carries the same kind of listing; read the key handover time.
  • Guesthouse (chambre d'hôtes): a room in the owner's home; check whether breakfast is included.
  • Hostel: solo and budget travellers. Colmar has few, Strasbourg more.

Cleaning fees and tourist tax often appear only at the payment step of an apartment booking, so compare the totals on that last screen.

How much are hotels in France?

It depends heavily on the week. Our own check was in Strasbourg: price bands on Booking for the second Tuesday night of December came to roughly four times those for the second Tuesday of January (looked up on 15 October 2026).

We made no price check in Paris or the villages; each card's Booking link gives the current rate for your dates. For cheap hotels in France, the January weeknights and the apartments card below are where the lower rates sit.

Strasbourg or Colmar: which is the better base in Alsace?

Strasbourg if you want more hotels and better rail links; Colmar if you would rather wake up in a small town and stroll through the market lights at night. The fastest train between them takes 25 minutes (Omio, October 2026), so the other one is always an easy day out.

How do I get from Paris to Alsace?

The Strasbourg TGV leaves from Paris Gare de l'Est and covers the 397 km in 1 hour 45 minutes on the fastest service (Omio). Most travellers heading for Colmar change in Strasbourg.

I land at Basel airport: how do I reach my hotel?

Use the French exit of EuroAirport, ride the bus to Saint-Louis station and change there to a TER heading for Colmar or Strasbourg (euroairport.com). With luggage, a hotel within walking distance of the station saves the most effort.

How early should I book a room for the Christmas markets?

The Strasbourg market runs from 27 November to 24 December 2026 (noel.strasbourg.eu). Our Colmar search on 15 October 2026 showed roughly 87% of places gone for the Tuesday night of 8 December, rising to 96% for Saturday the 12th. Booking a weeknight with free cancellation keeps your options open.

What are the sources behind this page?

The Strasbourg, Colmar, Obernai, Riquewihr and Kaysersberg sections come from our December 2023 trip and videos. Train times are from Omio, bus details from Fluo Grand Est, hotel scores from Booking's hotel pages and property totals from Booking's destination pages. The Paris card has no first-hand visit behind it.
