Do You Need a Visa for Austria? The Quick Answer by Passport
- EU, EEA, Swiss: no visa
- Visa-exempt list: 90 days in 180
- Others: Schengen visa
Yes, Austria is a Schengen country, so whether you need an Austria visa depends on your passport, not on Austria itself.
| Your passport | What you need for a short trip | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| EU, EEA or Swiss | No visa; a valid passport or ID card | Germany, Italy, Norway, Switzerland |
| On the EU visa-exempt list | No visa for up to 90 days in any 180 days, without work; EES registration at the border | United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Singapore, Japan, Brazil, Mexico |
| Not on that list | A Schengen visa (type C) before you travel | India, the Philippines |
The full visa-exempt list is the one the EU publishes for ETIAS; if your country is not on it, you need a visa. A valid residence permit from another Schengen country also lets you visit Austria for 90 days in 180 without a visa.

Austria Visit Visa (Schengen Type C) or National Visa (Type D)?
- C: up to 90 days in 180
- D: 91 days to 6 months
- Over 6 months: residence permit
| Visa | For | Fee |
|---|---|---|
| C Schengen visa | Tourism, business or visiting family and friends, without work; up to 90 days in 180 | €90 (6 to 12 years: €45) |
| D national visa | Stays in Austria of 91 days to 6 months, for example a long family visit or a course | €195 (under 6: €97) |
A type D visa cannot be extended inside Austria. For more than 6 months you need a residence permit, and work, including a job seeker visa, always needs a visa or permit of its own.

Austria Visa Application: Where to Apply (Embassy, Consulate or VFS)
- Apply where you live
- VFS only collects
- Austria must be the main destination
You apply at the Austrian embassy or consulate responsible for the country where you legally live, not the country of your passport. In many countries the embassy uses an external service provider, usually VFS Global, to take applications; the provider has no role in the decision.
| Situation | Where to apply |
|---|---|
| Austria is your only or main destination | Austrian embassy or consulate for your place of residence (or its VFS centre) |
| No Austrian embassy in your country | The Schengen embassy that represents Austria there; that country decides and its appeal rules apply |
| Most of your trip is in another Schengen country | That country, not Austria |
| D visa, work visa or residence permit | Only the competent Austrian embassy or consulate |

Austria Visa From the UK, US, Canada, Australia or Singapore
- Citizens: no visa
- Residents with another passport: apply there
- Embassy of your country of residence
British, US, Canadian, Australian and Singaporean citizens do not need an Austria visa for up to 90 days in 180 days. If you live in one of these countries on another passport that needs a visa, for example as an Indian national in the UK, you apply at the Austrian embassy responsible for the UK (or its service provider), because the competent embassy is the one for your place of residence.
Bring proof of your residence status there. The embassy's own page and its service provider's site have the local checklist, fee and appointment system.

- No legal right to a visa
- Two legal remedies
- 2025 refusal rate: 11.90%
After checking that the application is admissible, the embassy must be satisfied on each of these points; if one fails, the visa is refused:
- A plausible, verifiable purpose of the trip
- Enough money for the stay and the trip from your own meansOr an electronic declaration of sponsorship from someone in Austria
- Willingness to leave the Schengen area before the visa expiresSupported by evidence of ties to your home country
- Valid travel medical insurance of at least €30,000
- No threat to security or public order

Your questions answered
Is Austria a Schengen country?
Yes. Austria is one of the 29 countries in the Schengen area, so a Schengen visa issued by Austria is valid for the Schengen area unless it carries a territorial limit.
Do US citizens need a visa for Austria?
No, not for tourism or business visits of up to 90 days in any 180 days without work. US citizens are on the EU visa-exempt list; at the border the EES records your entry.
How do I apply for an Austria visa?
Book an appointment with the Austrian embassy or its service provider (usually VFS Global) for the country where you live, prepare the documents in the checklist, attend in person (fingerprints are taken unless recorded in the last 59 months), pay the €90 fee, then wait for the decision.
How long does an Austria visa take?
Normally up to 15 calendar days after a complete application, up to 45 if further checks are needed, plus up to 7 days of consultation for some nationalities. Apply 6 months to 15 days before travel.
How can I track my Austria visa application?
Use the tracking page of the service provider where you applied, for example VFS Global. The embassy itself answers questions only in writing.
What is the Austria visa fee?
€90 for adults, €45 for children aged 6 to 12, free under 6, and usually €35 for nationals with an EU visa facilitation agreement. The service provider's fee is extra.
Can I appeal an Austria visa refusal?
Yes. You can file a remonstration (Vorstellung) with the embassy or an appeal to the Federal Administrative Court; the refusal form explains how. You can also reapply with a new fee.
