We paid €49 for a schnitzel, a Mozart dessert, a Melange and a small salad, and we also tried the apple strudel. The real reason to come is the rooms: arched windows, chandeliers, velvet booths and carved wood. The schnitzel was good, but we liked Plachutta's more; come to Landtmann for coffee, strudel and the atmosphere. You can book a table online.

What to order at Cafe Landtmann
Landtmann works as both a coffee house and a restaurant: breakfast in the morning, Viennese dishes at lunch and dinner, and coffee and cake all day. What we tried, and what stands out on the menu:
- Apple strudel (€8.20): served warm; add vanilla sauce (€3.00) or whipped cream (€1.30). The "Apple Strudel Treat" on the menu brings strudel, cream and a Melange together for €15.40, the best value for a coffee and cake break.
- Melange (€6.90): Vienna's milky coffee with foam. To us it was close to a cappuccino, a little milkier and lighter. At Landtmann a small glass of water traditionally comes with your coffee.
- Wiener Schnitzel (€29.20): made from veal. The plate called "The Legend" (€38.70) adds parsley potatoes, green salad and cranberry jam. Our schnitzel was good; still, our favourites in Vienna were Plachutta's and Figlmüller's.
- Mozart desserts: there are two on the menu: a chocolate Mozart cake with pistachio cream (€8.50) and Mozart Dumplings, curd dumplings with pistachio nougat (€15.70). The Mozart dessert felt light to us; we expected something richer.
- Others: Sachertorte (€8.50), Kaiserschmarrn (€15.70), Buchteln with apricot jam (€14.70), Landtmann's marble Guglhupf cake (€5.60) and goulash soup (€10.50).

To choose a cake, look at the display by the entrance: slices of cake, fruit tarts and strudels are all there. Turkish coffee is on the menu too (€8.20), served with Turkish delight.
How much does Cafe Landtmann cost?
Coffee and cake come to about €15 per person: the "Apple Strudel Treat" gives you apple strudel, cream and a Melange for €15.40. With a meal it is about €42 per person: a veal schnitzel €29.20, a Melange (€6.90) and a salad (€5.90) (official menu, October 2026).
We paid €49 for a schnitzel, a Mozart dessert, a Melange and a small salad. On weekdays the lunch menu with soup and a main course is €16.90.
Do you need a reservation at Café Landtmann?
You can book online on the café's own website: Café Landtmann reservations . At busy times such as dinner and weekend breakfast, go with a reservation. When we filmed during the day the salons were quiet and many tables were free.

Café Landtmann history and Freud

Franz Landtmann opened the café on 1 October 1873, meaning it to be the most elegant coffee house in Vienna; at the time the Ringstrasse, the Burgtheater, City Hall and the university were still being built. The interior you see today comes from a 1929 renovation by the architect Ernst Meller and is protected.
In the mid-1970s, when the café was about to become a bank branch, the Querfeld family bought it, and the family still runs it (official info). Viennese coffee house culture is on Austria's national list of intangible cultural heritage.
Landtmann is remembered as a coffee house that Sigmund Freud visited, and the café still presents itself as a meeting place for politics, culture and science (official info).
Where is Café Landtmann and how to get there
The address is Universitätsring 4, 1010 Wien. Take the Ring trams (D, 1, 71) to Rathausplatz/Burgtheater and cross the road, or walk a few minutes from U2 Schottentor. City Hall, the Parliament and the Volksgarten are all on the same walk.

When to go to Café Landtmann
It is open Monday to Saturday 7:30-24:00 and Sunday 7:30-22:00; breakfast is served every day until 11:30 and the lunch menu runs on weekdays 11:30-14:30 (official info, October 2026). Come in the morning for breakfast, at weekday lunchtime for good value, or in the evening before or after a play; the Burgtheater is right next door.
Landtmann or Café Central?
Both are among Vienna's best-known coffee houses. Landtmann is larger, on the Ring, with a fuller food menu, and you can sit there for any meal from breakfast to midnight. Café Central is closed for renovation and is serving at a temporary address; the details are in our guide to what to eat in Vienna . If you are choosing between the two right now, choose Landtmann.
Is Café Landtmann worth it?
For coffee, strudel and the rooms, yes. If you want to see Viennese coffee house culture in one place, Landtmann is a good choice. If you come for a meal, the schnitzel is good but expensive (€29.20); for schnitzel in Vienna our first choices were Plachutta and Figlmüller.
After Landtmann
For Tafelspitz and veal schnitzel go to Plachutta Wollzeile , and for Kaiserschmarrn to Café Demel , both places we went to. The rest of the trip is in our Vienna travel guide , and the sights around the Ring in our guide to things to do in Vienna .
If you stay around the Ring you can walk to Landtmann: See Innere Stadt hotels Ad. Ad Areas and the hotels we stayed at are in our where to stay in Vienna guide.
