What to Eat in Vienna: Schnitzel, Cafes, Desserts

10 placesWhere to eat

What to eat in Vienna: Wiener Schnitzel, Tafelspitz, Kaiserschmarrn and apple strudel. That is the traditional Viennese food to try, and below are the ten places where we ate in Vienna, Austria on two trips; our best schnitzel was at Plachutta and Figlmüller, our best dessert Demel's Kaiserschmarrn.

Many schnitzels are pork, not veal; each card says which, with prices, hours and booking tips. Getting around and budget are in our Vienna travel guide .

Figlmüller

Where to Eat Schnitzel in Vienna

RestaurantsInnere Stadt
Per person
€20.90-28.90
What to order
pork schnitzel, chicken schnitzel, potato salad
Address
Wollzeile 5 and Bäckerstraße 6

Restaurant Figlmüller is the first name that comes up for schnitzel in Vienna. We ate at the original restaurant on Wollzeile. The waiter told us the most original one is the pork schnitzel; Umut ordered the chicken one, and we tried both.

The schnitzel is thin and crispy and hangs over the plate. People had told us it was overrated; we did not find it so, and the potato salad was as good as the schnitzel.

  • Hours: daily 11:00-22:30 (Wollzeile)
  • Reservations: book early
More about this place

Know before you go: there is no veal schnitzel on the Wollzeile menu in Vienna. Figlmüller's own schnitzel is pork (€21.90) and the chicken schnitzel is €20.90. Veal Wiener Schnitzel is only at the Bäckerstraße branch 150 metres away (€28.90). Wollzeile is open daily 11:00-22:30, Bäckerstraße 11:30-23:30 (official info, 19 October 2026).

When we went there was no table for days; we kept checking and caught a slot that opened up. The official site also recommends booking early and tells walk-ins to try their luck.

Plachutta

Tafelspitz and Veal Schnitzel

RestaurantsInnere Stadt
Per person
€28.90-36.90
What to order
Tafelspitz, veal schnitzel
Address
Wollzeile 38

We came after a whole day of museums without a reservation and waited a while at the door. We liked the schnitzel more than the one we had at Landtmann earlier that day. But we came for the Tafelspitz: beef boiled in a clear vegetable broth, served with sauces and potatoes. The beef was meltingly tender; in the video we gave it 10 out of 10.

  • Hours: daily 11:30-23:30
  • Reservations: on its website
More about this place

The two of us had a schnitzel and a Tafelspitz and paid about €80 with drinks. On the current menu the Tafelspitz is €36.90, the veal Wiener Schnitzel €28.90 and potato salad €7.10 extra; open daily 11:30-23:30 (official info, 19 October 2026).

Café Central

CafésInnere Stadt
Per person
€10.30-11.30 (temporary café, cake and coffee)
What to order
Tafelspitz
Address
Herrengasse 14, Palais Ferstel

On our first try we arrived a few minutes before 22:00 and they would not seat us because they were closing. Later in the trip, after Schönbrunn, we sat down and ordered Tafelspitz. We did not like the food; the Tafelspitz at Plachutta was better, and we would not queue again for these dishes.

  • Closed for renovation
  • Temporary address: Freyung 3

Pastry shopsInnere Stadt
Per person
€7.90-12.90
What to order
Kaiserschmarrn, apple strudel
Address
Kohlmarkt 14

We queued for about half an hour before we got a table. Kaiserschmarrn is a pancake torn up as it cooks in the pan and dusted with icing sugar; it comes with fruit compote, and we liked it. The apple strudel was warm and soft; we would have liked it a little crispier. We paid €37 for a Kaiserschmarrn, an apple strudel, a coffee and a water.

  • We paid €37
  • Hours: daily 10:00-19:00
  • Reservations: not taken

Café Landtmann

Schnitzel, Mozart Dessert and Melange

CafésInnere Stadt
Per person
€29.20-38.70
What to order
schnitzel, Mozart dessert, Melange
Address
Universitätsring 4

Our first stop in Vienna, and our first Viennese coffee house. We ordered a schnitzel, a Mozart dessert and a Melange; with a small salad it came to €49. The Melange is close to a cappuccino, a little milkier and lighter.

The Mozart dessert felt light to us; we expected something richer. The chestnut Mont Blanc dessert the waiter recommended is only served in winter, and we missed it.

  • We paid €49
  • Hours: Mon-Sat 7:30-24:00, Sun 7:30-22:00
More about this place

On the current menu the Wiener Schnitzel is €29.20, the Mozart cake €8.50 and a Melange €6.90. It is open Monday to Saturday 7:30-24:00 and Sunday 7:30-22:00, and you can book a table online on its website (official info, 19 October 2026).

6

Naschmarkt

Nusszelten and Cheese Sausage

MarketsNeubau and Mariahilf
What to order
Nusszelten, cheese sausage
Address
Wienzeile, 6th district

The Naschmarkt is Vienna's biggest open-air market: stalls of fresh vegetables, fruit and deli food, with small restaurants in between where you can sit and eat. We tried the Nusszelten everyone was buying; the original is poppy seed, and we took the walnut one.

It is a pastry with a walnut filling; not bad, and it would go well with a cup of tea. The cheese sausage people queue for was greasy but tasty.

  • Hours: stalls Mon-Fri 6:00-21:00, Sat 6:00-18:00
  • Hours: Saturday flea market 6:30-15:00
More about this place

7

Meissl & Schadn

Veal Schnitzel and Goulash

RestaurantsInnere Stadt
Per person
€30.90-35.90
What to order
veal schnitzel, goulash
Address
Schubertring 10-12

We came without a booking on our Christmas trip and were sent to the Gulasch & Söhne room in the same building; the plates still said Meissl & Schadn. The schnitzel came with potato salad, cranberry jam and a parsley and egg garnish.

It was very tender, but we did not find a big difference from Figlmüller, and the potato salad was better at Figlmüller. The goulash was more aromatic, spiced and rich in sauce.

  • Hours: daily 12:00-23:30
  • Reservations: on its website
More about this place

Here the schnitzel is veal only, and you can choose to have it fried in butter, lard or vegetable oil. Breakfast in the Burggarten Greenhouse

CafésInnere Stadt

€10.50-17.00
What to order
Viennese breakfast, croissant, sourdough bread
Address
Burggarten 1

Part of the glass greenhouse in the Burggarten has become a café, right next to the Hofburg. Breakfast brought honey, butter, jam, croissants and bread; the sourdough bread was really good. Of the best cafes in Vienna, Austria that we sat in, this was our breakfast pick.

They told us the stories that link the crescent shape of the croissant and Vienna's first coffee to the siege of 1683; we are not historians, we are only passing on what we were told.

  • Breakfast until 12:00

Zum Renner

A Local Viennese Restaurant in Nussdorf

Restaurants
Per person
€15.80-23.80
What to order
schnitzel, meat dishes
Address
Nußdorfer Platz 4, 19th district

We wanted somewhere away from the centre where Viennese people go rather than tourists, and ended up at Zum Renner in Nussdorf, in the north of the city. In the video we could not read the name on the sign properly; its full name is Gasthof Zum Renner.

We said it again the next day: the meat was very good, the schnitzel was good, and if you are in that part of town, go. We did not share the bill in the video.

  • Hours: Tue-Sat 11:30-23:00, Sun 11:30-22:00
More about this place

Ask which meat the schnitzel is made from when you order: on the menu the veal Wiener Schnitzel is €23.80 and the pork schnitzel €15.80. Hours may be listed differently elsewhere, so check the restaurant's own channel before you go.

Ferhat Döner

Döner Kebab in Vienna

Street foodHauptbahnhof Area
Per person
€8.50-16.90
What to order
dürüm döner
Address
Favoritenstraße 94, 10th district

After our first Vienna video, the comment we got most was "why didn't you go to Ferhat Döner?", so we went on our Christmas trip. The wraps are generously filled. It is a good döner, but it did not wow us. A solid choice for a quick, filling and cheap meal near the Hauptbahnhof.

  • Hours: daily 11:00-22:00
More about this place

Its only branch is at Favoritenstraße 94, near the Hauptbahnhof, open daily 11:00-22:00. A dürüm or a döner in bread costs €8.50 to €16.90 depending on size (official info, 19 October 2026).

What to eat in Vienna

Viennese Food

The Dishes We Tried

The traditional Austrian food we tried. Wiener Schnitzel (Figlmüller, Plachutta, Landtmann, Meissl & Schadn, Zum Renner), Tafelspitz (Plachutta), Kaiserschmarrn and apple strudel (Demel), the Mozart dessert and a Melange (Landtmann), Nusszelten and cheese sausage (Naschmarkt) and goulash (Gulasch & Söhne); we ate all of them at the Vienna places on this list, so if you want the famous food in Vienna, these are the dishes to start with. On the way we also bought a Baumstriezel (chimney cake) from a sweet stall; it was not as good as the one we had at the Thessaloniki Christmas market.

  • Tafelspitz
  • Kaiserschmarrn
  • Apfelstrudel

Food in Vienna: your questions answered

Where can you eat the best schnitzel in Vienna?

We ate it at five places: Figlmüller, Plachutta, Café Landtmann, Meissl & Schadn and Zum Renner, and liked Plachutta and Figlmüller most. For veal schnitzel go to Plachutta (€28.90), Meissl & Schadn (€30.90) or Figlmüller's Bäckerstraße branch (€28.90); Figlmüller on Wollzeile only has pork and chicken schnitzel (official info, 19 October 2026).

Is Wiener Schnitzel made from pork?

It depends on the restaurant. Meissl & Schadn's menu says a real Wiener Schnitzel is only made from veal, and it serves only veal. Figlmüller's own original schnitzel is pork. Before you order, look for Kalb (veal), Schwein (pork) or Huhn (chicken) on the menu.

Can you go to Figlmüller without a reservation?

Its official site recommends booking early, and walk-ins can try their luck. When we went there was no table for days, and we booked a slot that opened up. Wollzeile 5 is open daily 11:00-22:30, Bäckerstraße 6 daily 11:30-23:30 (official info, 19 October 2026).

What desserts should you try in Vienna?

We tried Kaiserschmarrn and apple strudel at Demel and the Mozart dessert at Café Landtmann. At Demel we paid €37 for two desserts, a coffee and a water.

Does Demel take reservations?

No. Demel's website says it does not take reservations; you queue. We waited about half an hour. It is at Kohlmarkt 14 and open daily 10:00-19:00 (official info, 19 October 2026).

Is Cafe Central in Vienna open now?

No. Café Central has been closed for renovation since 16 March 2026; reopening is planned between autumn and winter 2026. Meanwhile the same company's temporary DECENTRAL café at Freyung 3 is open daily (official info, 19 October 2026).

When is the Naschmarkt open?

The stalls are open Monday to Friday 6:00-21:00 and Saturday 6:00-18:00; on Sunday the stalls are closed and the market restaurants open 9:00-21:00. On Saturday morning a flea market sets up at the Kettenbrücke end (official info, 19 October 2026).

What food is Vienna famous for?

Wiener Schnitzel, Tafelspitz (boiled beef), Kaiserschmarrn, apple strudel and Sachertorte, and coffee house classics such as the Melange. These are the traditional Austrian dishes we ate at the places in this guide.

What are the best cafes in Vienna?

Of the ones we sat in: Café Landtmann on the Ring for coffee, strudel and the rooms, Demel for Kaiserschmarrn, and Palmenhaus in the Burggarten for breakfast. Café Central is closed for renovation for now.
