Hallstatt Hotels: Where to Stay in Hallstatt

The historic heart of Hallstatt: the Marktplatz, the lakeshore and the ferry landing. Every hotel and guesthouse here is within a few minutes' walk of the others; Heritage Hotel's main building is right by the landing stage, and Seehotel Grüner Baum and Seewirt Zauner are on the square.

We did not stay in the village; we came for the day and saw how full the lanes get by the afternoon. The famous viewpoint is five minutes from the square, and the easiest way to shoot it without a queue is to already be there at dawn. Watch the viewpoint in our Hallstatt vlog from 5:25 .

By train, you arrive across the lake and take the MS Stefanie ferry to the village: €4 one way, cash only (official info, October 2026). By car, you cannot drive to your hotel: guests park at P1 and take the shuttle.

Getting there: Train and ferry; by car, P1 and shuttle

The southern end of the village, with the valley station of the salt mine funicular, the bus stop and a handful of guesthouses. The historic square and the famous viewpoint are at the north end, a short walk away. If you want to be on the first salt mine tour, this is the place to sleep: the funicular starts at 9:00 and the mine tours at 9:30 (official info, October 2026).

When we arrived at 15:00, the day's tickets were gone; see that moment in the second video of our Vienna series from 8:39 . Polreich Bed&Breakfast in Lahn is about 300 metres from the funicular station (Booking listing).

The car rules are the same as in the centre: P1 and the shuttle.Walking distance: the salt mine and Skywalk funicular  about 2 min, the village waterfall  about 10 min, the Marktplatz  about 10 min, the Protestant church  about 10 min, the famous photo viewpoint  about 10 min.Our verdict: pick Lahn if the salt mine is your priority and you want a little distance from the square; the viewpoint is a 10-minute walk.

A quiet village at the far end of the lake rather than opposite Hallstatt. Most places to stay are apartments, guesthouses and small hotels; most Booking listings here are 5 to 6 km from the Hallstatt museum. There are no selfie crowds. There are three ways into Hallstatt: about 5 km on foot along the lake (roughly an hour), buses 543 and 544 in around 20 minutes (rome2rio, October 2026), or from May to September the MS Hallstatt boat between Obertraun, Lahn and the centre (official info, October 2026).

By train, Obertraun is the stop after Hallstatt, so you can get off here instead of taking the ferry. The Dachstein Krippenstein cable car runs from 1 May to 1 November 2026 in summer and from 19 December 2026 to 29 March 2027 in winter (official info, October 2026); it is also the way up to the ice caves.

Campervans are sent to the car park in Obertraun rather than Hallstatt.Walking distance: none of the sights in our guide are close; the Marktplatz  is about an hour on foot along the lake.Our verdict: the smartest base for train travellers on a budget and for the Dachstein; not for you if you want to wake up in the village.

A small town in the Traun valley north of Lake Hallstatt; the centre is about 3 km from the lake as the crow flies (rome2rio). Most hotels are family-run, and Booking lists places such as Goisererhof, Wohlfühlhotel Goiserer Mühle and the Vivea health hotel.

It is a good fit for a road trip: leave early, reach Hallstatt before the car parks fill up, and drive back in the evening. It works by train too, but allow for waiting time at the ferry.Walking distance: none of the sights in our guide are walkable; you reach Hallstatt by train and ferry or by car.Our verdict: for road trippers who want a quiet family hotel with parking; by train, Obertraun is easier.

The spa town of Bad Ischl is about 21 km from Hallstatt, 20 minutes by car, or 27 to 37 minutes by train to Hallstatt station, then the ferry (Omio, rome2rio, October 2026). For three nights or more, with separate days for Hallstatt, the Wolfgangsee and Gosau, this is the easiest base, with far more hotels and restaurants than Hallstatt.

It is also where the spa hotels are: EurothermenResort Hotel Royal connects to the Salzkammergut Therme by a heated walkway. Advent markets run from late November to early January; dates are in the Christmas card.Walking distance: Hallstatt's sights are not walkable from here; 27 to 37 minutes by train and ferry, then a few minutes from the pier to the Marktplatz .Our verdict: the best base in the region for three nights or more, for winter and for Advent.

If you are combining Hallstatt with Salzburg, or flying in and out of Salzburg, you can base yourself in the city and visit Hallstatt for the day. You get far more hotels and an evening in a real city. On our tour day we stopped in Salzburg after Hallstatt.

As a base for Hallstatt itself, though, it is far: the fastest train takes 2 hours (Omio, October 2026), so reaching the village before the crowds is tough. Our advice is one night in Hallstatt and the rest in Salzburg. Hallstatt's Christkindlmarkt is not a big city market. It is a single day on the main square with crafts, ornaments and regional food, a three-dimensional nativity scene made by the local HTBLA school and a large lit Christmas tree (official info, October 2026).

In 2026 it is on 8 December, 10:00-18:00; dates and times can change, so check the official event page  before you go. If you want to catch it, book the night of 7 to 8 December in the village; rooms are few, so look early.

For several Advent nights, base yourself in Bad Ischl. The craftspeople's Christkindlmarkt in the Trinkhalle runs on 20 November and 7 to 8 December 2026, the Schmankerldorf on Auböckplatz from 20 November 2026 to 6 January 2027 (closed 24 to 26 December), and the Advent Magic in the Kaiservilla's imperial stables on 28 and 29 November 2026 (official info, October 2026).

The Wolfgangseer Advent, spread across St. Wolfgang, St. Gilgen and Strobl on the Wolfgangsee, opens on 20 November 2026; check the official calendar for later dates. If Advent markets are the main reason for your trip, St.

Gilgen is another option. In Hallstatt in winter the funicular runs 9:00-16:30 and closes on 24 and 31 December; there are no lake tours, but the station ferry runs every day (official info, October 2026).

Other Places to Stay in Hallstatt

Hallstatt has few hotels, so guesthouses, B&Bs and apartments are worth a look even in the village. For two nights or more, or with a family, an apartment with a kitchen is often the more comfortable choice.
