Austria accommodation guide: Lake Hallstatt and the Alps with Halil Şımır

Where to Stay in Austria: Best Regions, Towns and Hotels

Where to stay in Austria, in short: make Vienna your base on a first trip, give Salzburg a night, and stay in Innsbruck or Zell am See for the Alps. We stayed in Vienna twice and saw Salzburg and Hallstatt on day trips. Below are the most booked Austria hotels, region by region. See Austria hotels  Ad

Our city guides in Austria

Austria by Region: Where to Stay in the Alps and on the Danube

5 areas

Outside Vienna, Salzburg and Hallstatt we grouped Austria into five regions: two in the Alps, two along the Danube and one in the south.

For every Alpine or Danube base below you get three Austria hotels from Booking's most booked lists and a link that opens the rest of that town's hotels. Times are from Vienna, approximate, from the ÖBB timetable; they vary by service.

Tyrol

Innsbruck

The capital of Tyrol, with the mountains starting right above the rooftops. It is too far from Vienna for a day trip; plan two nights at least. Our pick of the best Innsbruck hotels below: high guest scores and many reviews, all from Booking's list of the city's most booked stays.

Ski resorts such as Kitzbühel (Kitzbuhel) and St. Anton, with Austria hotels of their own for ski weeks, are in Tyrol too: from Innsbruck you reach Kitzbühel by train with a change at Wörgl (seat61), and from Vienna it is about 4 hours 45 minutes with one change (ÖBB, October 2026).

  • An old town with the Golden Roof, and the Nordkette cable car leaving from the city
  • About 4.5 hours from Vienna by direct train (ÖBB, October 2026)
  • 355 properties on Booking

Best for: The Alps with city comforts, cable cars and skiing

From Vienna: Innsbruck: about 4.5 hours by direct train

More about this area
We did not stay in Innsbruck. The three Innsbruck Austria hotels below are on Booking's most booked list for the city, each with a score of 8.9 or more and thousands of reviews.

Salzburger Land

Zell am See and Kaprun

The place to stay for lakeside walks, summer hiking and winter skiing. Kaprun has no railway station: the bus from the square outside Zell am See station takes about 20 minutes to Kaprun centre, every half hour during the day (ÖBB, October 2026). Without a car, a hotel near Zell am See station makes life easier.

  • A town on the Zeller See, with the Kitzsteinhorn glacier above Kaprun
  • About 4 hours 15 minutes from Vienna by train with one change (ÖBB, October 2026)
  • 454 properties on Booking

Best for: Lake, glacier and skiing; mountain walks in summer

From Vienna: Zell am See: about 4 hours 15 minutes with one change

We did not stay in Zell am See either. These three Zell am See hotels have the highest scores among the ten most booked Booking shows for the town.

Styria

Graz

Austria's second largest city, with an old town far calmer than Vienna's. The train runs over the mountain line of the Semmering Railway (seat61, October 2026). A day trip works, but it means 5 hours on the train there and back; stay one night and you get the evening in the old town as well.

  • The old town and Schloss Eggenberg are on the UNESCO World Heritage list
  • 2.5 hours from Vienna by direct railjet, hourly (seat61, ÖBB, October 2026)
  • 685 properties on Booking

Best for: Baroque old town and Schloss Eggenberg, quieter than Vienna

From Vienna: Graz: 2.5 hours by direct train

We did not stay in Graz. Of the Graz hotels on Booking's most booked list, these three score 8.6 or more with over 4,000 reviews each.

Upper Austria

Linz

Every westbound train from Vienna stops in Linz (seat61, October 2026). If you want to split the trip to Salzburg or Hallstatt, a night here works; Attnang-Puchheim, where Hallstatt trains connect, is in the same state.

  • On the Danube, on the main line between Vienna and Salzburg
  • About 1 hour 15 minutes from Vienna by direct train (seat61, ÖBB, October 2026)
  • 229 properties on Booking

Best for: A one night stop between Vienna and Salzburg

From Vienna: Linz: about 1 hour 15 minutes by direct train

Lower Austria

the Wachau and Krems

The stretch of the Danube between Krems and Melk, and the closest escape from Vienna. It is one of Austria's best known wine regions, with vineyards along the river and wine taverns in Krems and Dürnstein (Durnstein), the two places people search most when they look for Austria hotels in the Wachau.

Melk is about 1 hour from Vienna Hauptbahnhof with a change at St. Pölten (ÖBB, October 2026); smaller villages such as Dürnstein need two changes, so without a car Krems is the easier base.

  • The Wachau valley is on the UNESCO World Heritage list; Melk Abbey and Dürnstein are here
  • About 1 hour 5 minutes from Vienna Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof to Krems by direct train (ÖBB, October 2026)
  • 97 properties in Krems on Booking

Best for: A quiet night on the Danube close to Vienna

From Vienna: Krems: about 1 hour by direct train

More about this area
We did not stay in Krems. These three Krems hotels come from the most booked list Booking publishes for the town; there are hotels in Melk and Dürnstein too, but fewer trains.

Where to stay in Austria: your questions answered

Which city should I stay in in Austria?

On a first trip, Vienna. Most international flights land at Vienna airport, and the railjets to Salzburg, Linz and Graz leave from Vienna Hauptbahnhof. We stayed in Vienna on both of our trips and went to Salzburg and Hallstatt for the day. Our where to stay in Vienna guide  compares the Innere Stadt, Neubau, Landstrasse and the other districts.

What are the best day trips from Vienna by train?

Krems in the Wachau is about 1 hour by train, Linz 1 hour 15 minutes, Graz 2.5 hours and Salzburg about 2.5 hours by direct railjet. Hallstatt takes 3 hours 12 minutes at best, and we did it as a day trip too. Innsbruck and Zell am See are more than 4 hours away, so plan at least one night there (ÖBB, seat61, October 2026).

How much are hotels in Austria?

When we checked Booking on 28 October 2026 without dates, the lowest nightly price on each city page started at €53 in Vienna and Linz, €57 in Graz, €65 in Salzburg, €75 in Innsbruck, €94 in Krems and €113 in Zell am See.

Most of the hotels picked on this page cost more than that. Prices change once you enter dates; each region ends with a link to that town's hotels, priced for the nights you choose.

Booking a hotel in the Alps or a small Austrian town: what matters?

Station: Kaprun has no railway station, so you take the bus from Zell am See, and Dürnstein needs two changes by public transport. Without a car, stay near the station in Zell am See or Krems. Skiing: if you are going to ski, check before booking whether you walk to the lift or need the ski bus. December: in the Christmas market weeks we could not get a central room in Vienna, so we ended up in Landstrasse; book Vienna first if you travel in December. Total price: some hotels add a local tax per person per night, so compare the total, not the nightly rate.

Why these hotels in Innsbruck, Graz, Linz, Zell am See and Krems?

Outside Vienna we have not stayed in an Austrian hotel. The hotels in the region cards come from the most booked list on each Booking city page; from that list we took the ones with high guest scores and many reviews. Scores move over time, so check the hotel's Booking page for the current one.
