Rust, Austria: Storks and Lake Neusiedl

Schengen AreaAustriaCity guide

Rust, Austria, is a small Burgenland town on the west shore of Lake Neusiedl (Neusiedler See), 30 minutes by bus from Eisenstadt and about 2 hours from Vienna. Its old town is UNESCO-listed, its chimneys carry stork nests and its sweet Ausbruch wine once bought the town its freedom. We came in December after Eisenstadt , when the Christmas market spilled from the square into old courtyards and a wine cellar. Below: three stops, the market dates and the easiest way to get here.

Things to Do in Rust on Lake Neusiedl: Old Town and Storks

Rust has governed itself as a “Freistadt” (free town) since 1681, which makes it Austria’s smallest statutory city; the town bought that status with money from its sweet Ausbruch wine.

Its historic centre has been part of the Fertő/Neusiedlersee UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape since 2001 (official info, October 2026). The baroque doorways around the square are why; when we came, the Christmas market filled it.

The Fischerkirche (Fishermen’s Church) at the end of the square holds the oldest organ in Burgenland. It opens only from Easter to September, weekends 15:00 to 18:00, for €7 with an audio guide, and is closed from October to Easter (official info, October 2026).

My pick for staying nearby: the old town itself. When the market closes in the evening, you walk back to your room instead of waiting for a bus.

As we said in the video, the old centre is something else: narrow cobbled lanes, low whitewashed houses and a church tower at the end of the street, like a postcard. Step one lane back from the busy square and the town goes quiet.

Rust is known as the town of storks. A local stork society, the Storchenverein, looks after them, and the chimneys carry special platforms so the nests stay put. On the old town wall you’ll find the society’s sign and a woven nest.

The storks arrive in late March or early April, and about 22 pairs stay from spring into summer (official info, October 2026). In winter the nests are empty; come in summer to see whole stork families.

Rust Christmas Market 2026: Ruster Adventmeile Dates and Hours

Advent

Rust Christmas market: the Ruster Adventmeile

square, courtyards and a cellar

The market isn’t on one square: it runs from Rathausplatz to Haydnplatz, into old courtyards and down into a wine cellar.

Ruster Adventmeile: dates and hours

Rathausplatz, Conradplatz and Haydnplatz

20 Nov to 20 Dec 2026Free

In 2026 it runs from 20 November to 20 December, Friday to Sunday 14:00 to 20:00, plus 7 and 8 December. Entry is free. There’s a Christmas concert on the Rathausplatz stage from 17:00 to 18:00 every market day (official event page , October 2026). Dates and hours can change; check the official page before you go.

We found carved wooden figures, handmade soaps, woolly hats and honey. Even on a Sunday it was busy, and it gets busier towards evening, so come in the early afternoon for a calmer walk.

Courtyards and a wine cellar: what makes it different

Kremayrhaus courtyard and Ruster Zechkeller

CourtyardsCellar

What sets Rust apart is that the stalls move into the courtyards of old houses. In the inner courtyard of the Kremayrhaus (Conradplatz 2), the town-owned museum, local clubs run stands, the stork society among them.

At the Ruster Zechkeller (Conradplatz 4) the market goes underground into a wine cellar, Friday to Sunday and 7 to 8 December, 13:30 to 19:00. Winemakers also open their courtyards along Hauptstraße (official info, October 2026).

Look for Burgenland Kipferl, roast chestnuts, crêpes, Kaiserschmarren and mulled wine; there’s Kinderpunsch for kids, plus a carousel and a little train on Conradplatz.

You can add Eisenstadt’s two Christmas markets the same day; dates are in our Eisenstadt guide .

How to Get to Rust from Vienna and Eisenstadt

By Air

The nearest airport is Vienna International. From the airport, take a bus or train to Wien Hauptbahnhof, then the Eisenstadt train. Find the cheapest dates for flights to Vienna  Ad

By Bus

Rust has no train station. In the video we said about 1.5 hours from Vienna by train; to be precise, the train goes to Eisenstadt and a bus does the rest. The easiest way: train from Vienna to Eisenstadt (1 hour 9 minutes, direct, hourly), then bus 286 from the Domplatz stop to Rust, about 30 minutes.

The bus runs all year; at weekends it leaves Eisenstadt roughly every two hours (10:35, 12:35, 14:35 and so on), and buses back leave from Franz-Josef-Platz in Rust (official timetable; check current times before you go).

On 24 and 31 December buses run on the Saturday timetable. Bus 120 runs direct from Vienna to Rust, but only a few times on weekdays, so it doesn’t work for a day trip. Check Vienna to Eisenstadt train times  Ad

By Car

By car you come via Eisenstadt; Rust sits on the lake just east of it. In town there are car parks at Franz-Josefs-Platz (P1), Seezeile by the lakeside hotel (P2) and Am Hafen at the harbour (P3) (official info, October 2026).

A car is the most flexible option if you also want Eisenstadt and more of the lake the same day. Compare Vienna Airport car rental prices  Ad

Where to Stay: Rust, Eisenstadt or Vienna?

Best for: combining Rust and Eisenstadt and staying close to the train back to Vienna.

Keep in mind: getting to Rust and back depends on the bus timetable.

Where we stayed

Best for: anyone in Austria mainly for Vienna who has a day for Burgenland. We stayed in Vienna too.

Keep in mind: it’s about 2 hours each way by train and bus; plan your evening return.

Getting around: the town is walkable; train and bus from Vienna are in the getting there section.

Tickets and tours: Fischerkirche €7 (summer season only), town walk €9 (25 March to 25 October).

Food: we didn’t eat a meal in Rust, so the food line is an estimate.

Free: Rathausplatz, the cobbled lanes, the stork nests and the Christmas market.

What to Eat and Drink in Rust: Ruster Ausbruch and Lake Fish

Rust cooks Pannonian, meaning Hungarian-influenced: paprika, beans, potatoes and cabbage, and zander from the lake, which locals call Fogosch (official info, October 2026). It’s also a wine town, and Ruster Ausbruch is its signature; before leaving we stopped for a glass of local white and red with some cheese.

We didn’t sit down for a full meal here, so below is what Rust is known for, not a restaurant review.

  • Ruster Ausbruch: the town’s famous sweet wine, made at Trockenbeerenauslese level; Rust has carried its “R” wine privilege since 1524 (official info, October 2026).
  • Fogosch (zander): Lake Neusiedl’s fish; pike, carp and catfish are on lake menus too.
  • Paprika: used as both a vegetable and a spice, a Hungarian influence.
  • Krautfleckerl: pasta squares with cabbage, also sold at the Christmas market.
  • Burgenland Kipferl: crescent biscuits, a market classic.
