Things to Do in Eisenstadt, Austria

Schengen AreaAustriaCity guide

Eisenstadt, Austria, is the capital of Burgenland, 57 km from Vienna and 1 hour 9 minutes away by direct train. Its star is Esterházy Palace, where Joseph Haydn spent much of his career. We came on a day trip from Vienna in December, walked through the Christmas market set up inside the palace, then went on to Rust on Lake Neusiedl. Below: three stops, the Christmas market dates and the easiest way to get here from Vienna.

Things to Do in Eisenstadt: Esterházy Palace and Hauptstraße

3 stops
Centre

Hauptstraße and Esterházy Palace

three stops · on foot

Eisenstadt is small; the main street and the palace are a few minutes apart, and the Haydn Hall is inside the palace.

Eisenstadt is the capital of Burgenland, Austria’s easternmost state. We walked in along Hauptstraße, a pedestrian street lined with low, colourful old houses. In December a small Christmas market fills it: cheese stalls, ornaments and a carousel for kids. Dates and hours are in the Christmas market section below.

Joseph Haydn lived here for decades and wrote most of his music in this town. His house is now a museum; hours and prices are in the FAQ.

My pick for staying nearby: around Hauptstraße. You walk to the market and the palace, and you don’t have to watch the clock for the last train to Vienna.

Esterházy Palace (Schloss Esterházy)

Ticket €19Guided tour €25

The yellow palace, Schloss Esterházy (sometimes called Esterházy Castle), is the reason most people come. It belonged to the Esterházys, one of Hungary’s great noble families, and Haydn worked for them for years. We came during the Advent market, when stalls were set up inside the frescoed state rooms (details in the Christmas section).

A palace ticket is €19 for adults, €25 with a guided tour, and free under 6. In November and December you can visit on your own only on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, 10:00 to 16:00; on weekdays the palace is open by guided tour only.

The English tour runs at 13:00 at weekends (official info, October 2026). The ticket also covers the wine museum in the cellars. Some rooms may close during events.

The 50-hectare Schlosspark behind the palace is open all year and free.

My pick for staying nearby: around the palace. You walk to the first palace tour in the morning, and in Advent the palace market is on your doorstep.

The palace’s great hall is named after Haydn, and its ceiling is frescoed from end to end. On our visit it was full of Christmas stalls, and a choir was singing with a piano in front of the Christmas tree.

You see the Haydnsaal on the “Glanzlichter” route included in the palace ticket, and concerts are held here all year (official info, October 2026).

Esterházy Palace Advent market: inside the state rooms

the palace rooms and courtyard

11 to 13 Dec 2026€9

This is what makes Eisenstadt different: the stalls go up inside the palace’s frescoed rooms, with a choir and a kids’ programme. We paid €7 to get in. We also tried an Erdbeerpunsch, a strawberry punch that tasted like forest berries, and the trdelník stalls were €1 to €1.50 cheaper than in Vienna.

In 2026 it opens Friday 11 December 15:00 to 20:00 and 12 to 13 December 11:00 to 19:00. Adults pay €9, or €7 if you buy before 6 December; under-6s are free. The ticket is per person per day, and the Advent huts in the courtyard are free to enter (official event page , October 2026). Dates and prices can change; check the official page before you go.

After Eisenstadt we went on to Rust on the lake. Its market spreads into old-town courtyards, the courtyard of the town museum and a wine cellar, Friday to Sunday. Hours and the bus are in our Rust and Lake Neusiedl guide .

How to Get from Vienna to Eisenstadt by Train, Bus or Car

By Air

Eisenstadt has no airport; the nearest is Vienna International Airport, 65 km away (official info, October 2026). Airport buses run to Wien Hauptbahnhof every half hour, and the Eisenstadt train leaves from there. Find the cheapest dates for flights to Vienna  Ad

By Bus

The alternative is Regionalbus 200 from Wien Hauptbahnhof: about 75 minutes, or about 60 minutes on express runs (official info, October 2026). From Eisenstadt, bus 286 leaves Domplatz for Rust and takes about 30 minutes; times are in our Rust guide .

By Train

The easiest way from Vienna is the train. A direct REX 64 leaves Wien Hauptbahnhof every hour at :18 and reaches Eisenstadt at :27 the next hour, about 1 hour 9 minutes; for example 9:18 to 10:27.

Trains back leave Eisenstadt at :30 or :31 (ÖBB timetable, October 2026). Fares start at €11 (Omio, October 2026). A new timetable starts on 13 December 2026, so check times again if you’re going for Christmas. Check Vienna to Eisenstadt train times  Ad

By Car

Vienna to Eisenstadt is 57 km: take the A2 towards Graz, switch to the A3 at Guntramsdorf and leave at Müllendorf (official info, October 2026). Parking is covered in the tips section. Burgenland cooking leans Hungarian: paprika, beans, potatoes and cabbage, plus fish from Lake Neusiedl (official info, October 2026). We didn’t sit down for a meal in Eisenstadt, so below is what the region is known for, not a restaurant review.

  • Fogosch (zander): the white fish from Lake Neusiedl; locals call zander Fogosch.
  • Krautstrudel: thin pastry rolled around cabbage.
  • Bohnensterz: a hearty Burgenland bean dish.
  • Grammelpogatscherl: small savoury scones with pork cracklings.
