Best for: Budget and Dachstein
At the southeast end of the lake with its own station; the closest base for the Krippenstein cable car.
Pros Cheaper and quieter than the village.
Cons 20 minutes by bus to Hallstatt, few evening options.

Where to stay in Hallstatt, Austria, in one line: for one night, sleep in the village itself, in the centre (Markt) or at the quieter south end (Lahn); coming by train on a budget, Obertraun; for several nights, winter or Advent, Bad Ischl. Hallstatt hotels are few and the village fills up by midday, so the real question is whether you want to see it before the tour buses arrive.
Why one night in the village? We came on a day tour from Vienna and did not stay overnight. We arrived at 15:00, the lanes were packed and the salt mine was sold out for the day, so we never got up.
Sleep in the village and you see the square empty before the coaches arrive and can catch the first mine tour; if you are not staying, buy your salt mine ticket in advance. Hotel details come from the hotels' own websites and Hallstatt's tourism listings.
Below we compare six bases for Hallstatt by distance to the village, transport and who each one suits. Each area card lists the sights from our Hallstatt guide you can walk to, and the FAQ covers lake-view hotels, Heritage Hotel Hallstatt, parking and budget options.
One thing to know before you book: Hallstatt station is not in the village but across the lake, and you reach the village by ferry.
Best for: Budget and Dachstein
At the southeast end of the lake with its own station; the closest base for the Krippenstein cable car.
Pros Cheaper and quieter than the village.
Cons 20 minutes by bus to Hallstatt, few evening options.

Lakeside Hotels
The historic heart of Hallstatt: the Marktplatz, the lakeshore and the ferry landing. Every hotel and guesthouse here is within a few minutes' walk of the others; Heritage Hotel's main building is right by the landing stage, and Seehotel Grüner Baum and Seewirt Zauner are on the square.
We did not stay in the village; we came for the day and saw how full the lanes get by the afternoon. The famous viewpoint is five minutes from the square, and the easiest way to shoot it without a queue is to already be there at dawn. Watch the viewpoint in our Hallstatt vlog from 5:25 .
By train, you arrive across the lake and take the MS Stefanie ferry to the village: €4 one way, cash only (official info, October 2026). By car, you cannot drive to your hotel: guests park at P1 and take the shuttle.
For the sights, see our things to do in Hallstatt guide.Walking distance: the Marktplatz , the Protestant church , the village waterfall , the famous photo viewpoint , the boat tour pier about 2-5 min; the salt mine and Skywalk funicular about 10 min.Our verdict: if you only stay one night in Hallstatt, stay here; there is no other way to have the village to yourself in the morning.
Best for: One night, evening and early morning in the village
Trade-offs: Few rooms, centre closed to cars
Vibe: Historic lakeside village
To the village centre: You are in it
Getting there: Train and ferry; by car, P1 and shuttle
Good to know: take a ticket when you enter P1, register at the shuttle point, and press the Hotel-Ticket button before your first exit (official info, October 2026). Tell your hotel your arrival time in advance.
The southern end of the village, with the valley station of the salt mine funicular, the bus stop and a handful of guesthouses. The historic square and the famous viewpoint are at the north end, a short walk away. If you want to be on the first salt mine tour, this is the place to sleep: the funicular starts at 9:00 and the mine tours at 9:30 (official info, October 2026).
When we arrived at 15:00, the day's tickets were gone; see that moment in the second video of our Vienna series from 8:39 . Polreich Bed&Breakfast in Lahn is about 300 metres from the funicular station (Booking listing).
The car rules are the same as in the centre: P1 and the shuttle.Walking distance: the salt mine and Skywalk funicular about 2 min, the village waterfall about 10 min, the Marktplatz about 10 min, the Protestant church about 10 min, the famous photo viewpoint about 10 min.Our verdict: pick Lahn if the salt mine is your priority and you want a little distance from the square; the viewpoint is a 10-minute walk.
Best for: Catching the first salt mine tour
Trade-offs: Square and viewpoint are at the north end
Vibe: South end of the village
To the village centre: About 1 km on foot
Getting there: Bus stop for lines 542 and 543; by car, P1
Good to know: staying in Lahn does not guarantee you a salt mine slot; buy your ticket online at tickets.salzwelten.at in advance.
A quiet village at the far end of the lake rather than opposite Hallstatt. Most places to stay are apartments, guesthouses and small hotels; most Booking listings here are 5 to 6 km from the Hallstatt museum. There are no selfie crowds. There are three ways into Hallstatt: about 5 km on foot along the lake (roughly an hour), buses 543 and 544 in around 20 minutes (rome2rio, October 2026), or from May to September the MS Hallstatt boat between Obertraun, Lahn and the centre (official info, October 2026).
By train, Obertraun is the stop after Hallstatt, so you can get off here instead of taking the ferry. The Dachstein Krippenstein cable car runs from 1 May to 1 November 2026 in summer and from 19 December 2026 to 29 March 2027 in winter (official info, October 2026); it is also the way up to the ice caves.
Campervans are sent to the car park in Obertraun rather than Hallstatt.Walking distance: none of the sights in our guide are close; the Marktplatz is about an hour on foot along the lake. Our verdict: the smartest base for train travellers on a budget and for the Dachstein; not for you if you want to wake up in the village.
Best for: Train travellers, budgets, Dachstein trips
Trade-offs: Boat runs May to September only
Vibe: Quiet village at the southeast end of the lake
To the village centre: About 5 km on foot, 9-10 km by road
Getting there: Own train station, buses 543/544, summer boat
Good to know: the boat stops after September, so check the last bus if you plan a late evening in Hallstatt. The lakeside Seehotel am Hallstättersee is officially rated 2 stars; people choose it for the location, not for luxury.
A small town in the Traun valley north of Lake Hallstatt; the centre is about 3 km from the lake as the crow flies (rome2rio). Most hotels are family-run, and Booking lists places such as Goisererhof, Wohlfühlhotel Goiserer Mühle and the Vivea health hotel.
It is a good fit for a road trip: leave early, reach Hallstatt before the car parks fill up, and drive back in the evening. It works by train too, but allow for waiting time at the ferry.Walking distance: none of the sights in our guide are walkable; you reach Hallstatt by train and ferry or by car.Our verdict: for road trippers who want a quiet family hotel with parking; by train, Obertraun is easier.
Best for: Road trippers who want a quiet base
Trade-offs: Centre is not on the lake
Vibe: Small town in the Traun valley
To the village centre: About 10.5 km, 10 min by car
Getting there: Hourly train, then the ferry
Good to know: day visitors cannot book P1 or P2, and the signs on the road show free spaces; P2 opens in summer only (official info, October 2026). Leave early.
The spa town of Bad Ischl is about 21 km from Hallstatt, 20 minutes by car, or 27 to 37 minutes by train to Hallstatt station, then the ferry (Omio, rome2rio, October 2026). For three nights or more, with separate days for Hallstatt, the Wolfgangsee and Gosau, this is the easiest base, with far more hotels and restaurants than Hallstatt.
It is also where the spa hotels are: EurothermenResort Hotel Royal connects to the Salzkammergut Therme by a heated walkway. Advent markets run from late November to early January; dates are in the Christmas card.Walking distance: Hallstatt's sights are not walkable from here; 27 to 37 minutes by train and ferry, then a few minutes from the pier to the Marktplatz .Our verdict: the best base in the region for three nights or more, for winter and for Advent.
Best for: Several nights, winter and Advent
Trade-offs: Take an early train to beat the crowds
Vibe: Imperial spa town
To the village centre: About 21 km, 20 min by car
Getting there: Train 27-37 min, then the ferry
Good to know: take one of the first trains to be in Hallstatt early. Ferry departures are timed to the trains and can shift if a train is late (official info, October 2026).
If you are combining Hallstatt with Salzburg, or flying in and out of Salzburg, you can base yourself in the city and visit Hallstatt for the day. You get far more hotels and an evening in a real city. On our tour day we stopped in Salzburg after Hallstatt.
As a base for Hallstatt itself, though, it is far: the fastest train takes 2 hours (Omio, October 2026), so reaching the village before the crowds is tough. Our advice is one night in Hallstatt and the rest in Salzburg. For the city, see our Salzburg travel guide .Walking distance: none of Hallstatt's sights; for Salzburg's own walking route, see things to do in Salzburg .Our verdict: stay in Salzburg if Hallstatt is a single day added to a Salzburg trip, but one night in the village is always better.
Best for: Combining Hallstatt with Salzburg
Trade-offs: Hard to reach the village early
Vibe: City with an airport
To the village centre: About 75 km, 1 hour by car
Getting there: Fastest train 2 hours with a change; bus 150
Good to know: there is no direct train between Salzburg and Hallstatt, so plan your return time before you set off.
Hallstatt's Christkindlmarkt is not a big city market. It is a single day on the main square with crafts, ornaments and regional food, a three-dimensional nativity scene made by the local HTBLA school and a large lit Christmas tree (official info, October 2026).
In 2026 it is on 8 December, 10:00-18:00; dates and times can change, so check the official event page before you go. If you want to catch it, book the night of 7 to 8 December in the village; rooms are few, so look early.
For several Advent nights, base yourself in Bad Ischl. The craftspeople's Christkindlmarkt in the Trinkhalle runs on 20 November and 7 to 8 December 2026, the Schmankerldorf on Auböckplatz from 20 November 2026 to 6 January 2027 (closed 24 to 26 December), and the Advent Magic in the Kaiservilla's imperial stables on 28 and 29 November 2026 (official info, October 2026).
The Wolfgangseer Advent, spread across St. Wolfgang, St. Gilgen and Strobl on the Wolfgangsee, opens on 20 November 2026; check the official calendar for later dates. If Advent markets are the main reason for your trip, St.
Gilgen is another option. In Hallstatt in winter the funicular runs 9:00-16:30 and closes on 24 and 31 December; there are no lake tours, but the station ferry runs every day (official info, October 2026).
Good to know: the stone lanes get icy, so pack shoes with grip. Advent dates are announced each year; check the official calendar before you go.
Other Places to Stay in Hallstatt
Hallstatt has few hotels, so guesthouses, B&Bs and apartments are worth a look even in the village. For two nights or more, or with a family, an apartment with a kitchen is often the more comfortable choice.
If you stay in the village centre, you cannot drive to the door; ask your host about P1 and the shuttle before you book. If you come by train, carry cash for the ferry.

Good to know: the stars on booking sites are not always Austria's official rating; if the rating matters to you, check the hotel's own website. Hotels in the village centre cannot be reached by car; Heritage's listing on the Hallstatt tourism site gives the P1 shuttle as €18 per 24 hours (official info, October 2026).

4-star superior, linked by a heated walkway to the Salzkammergut Therme with indoor and outdoor brine pools and a large sauna area. A sensible base for winter and rainy days. Best for: train travellers who want the thermal spa a walk away.See EurothermenResort Hotel Royal prices AdIn the village itself, for one night. The best-known hotels sit around the main square and the ferry landing: Heritage Hotel Hallstatt by the landing stage, and Seehotel Grüner Baum and Seewirt Zauner on the Marktplatz.
If you want the funicular on your doorstep, look at Lahn at the south end. For two nights or more, Obertraun or Bad Ischl give you more choice and easy transport. We compare the hotels one by one in the best-known and luxury hotels card.
Yes, if you want to see Hallstatt quiet. We came on a day tour from Vienna and slept in Vienna, and it worked, but we arrived at 15:00 to packed lanes and a sold-out salt mine. A night in the village gives you the evening and the early morning, before the coaches arrive. If Vienna is your main base, see where to stay in Vienna . See hotels in Vienna Ad
On the official listings: Seehotel Grüner Baum has four suites with large lakeside terraces and rooms with lake balconies; at Seewirt Zauner every room faces the lake or the mountains; Heritage Hotel has some lake-view rooms and balconies; and the suites at Hallstatt Hideaway look over the lake or the mountains. Lake-view rooms are always the first to go, so book these early.
Hallstatt if you have one night and want the village to yourself early and late. Obertraun if you want more space for your money, a train station on the doorstep and quick access to the Dachstein Krippenstein cable car and ice caves.
From Obertraun it is about 5 km on foot along the lake, around 20 minutes by bus 543/544, or a summer boat (May to September) to Lahn and the centre.
Not at your hotel, if it is in the centre. The village is closed to traffic by two barrier systems, and guests cannot drive through it. Park at the P1 multi-storey car park (open all year), register at the shuttle point, and the shuttle takes you and your luggage to your hotel.
Before you first leave, press the Hotel-Ticket button on the machine, or you will pay the higher day rate. Hotels outside the centre have their own parking. Day spaces at P1 and P2 cannot be booked, and P2 opens in summer only (official info, October 2026).
Yes, especially for three nights or more. It is about 21 km and 20 minutes by car, or 27 to 37 minutes by train to Hallstatt station plus the ferry. You get far more hotels and restaurants than in Hallstatt, a thermal spa, the Kaiservilla, and Advent markets from late November. The catch is that you will not wake up in Hallstatt, so take an early train.
You can, but getting there before the crowds is hard: Salzburg to Hallstatt is about 75 km and 1 hour by car, and at least 2 hours by train with a change. A better plan is one night in Hallstatt on the way, then the rest of your stay in Salzburg. Our Salzburg card has the details.
Winter is quieter and often snowy, and staying in the village is lovely. Hours shrink, though: from 2 November 2026 to 6 January 2027 the funicular runs 9:00-16:30, the last salt mine tour starts at 15:00, and both close on 24 and 31 December.
Lake tours and boat hire run in summer only, while the station ferry runs every day of the year (official info, October 2026). For several winter nights, Bad Ischl and its thermal spa make a good base. Some hotels close for a few weeks in November, so check your dates on the listing.
Obertraun and Bad Goisern. Both have train stations and plenty of apartments and guesthouses, usually with free parking. Coming by train also saves you the car and parking costs. If you still want to sleep in the village, look at guesthouses and B&Bs rather than hotels; see the other options card.
Heritage Hotel Hallstatt lists family rooms and free cots for children up to 2, and children can join the salt mine tour from age 4 (official info, October 2026). For more space and a kitchen, an apartment in Obertraun or Bad Goisern works well. Note that Strand Hallstatt and Hallstatt Hideaway are adults only.
