Rathausplatz and the old houses of Rust
the town square
Rust has governed itself as a “Freistadt” (free town) since 1681, which makes it Austria’s smallest statutory city; the town bought that status with money from its sweet Ausbruch wine.
Its historic centre has been part of the Fertő/Neusiedlersee UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape since 2001 (official info, October 2026). The baroque doorways around the square are why; when we came, the Christmas market filled it.
The Fischerkirche (Fishermen’s Church) at the end of the square holds the oldest organ in Burgenland. It opens only from Easter to September, weekends 15:00 to 18:00, for €7 with an audio guide, and is closed from October to Easter (official info, October 2026).
My pick for staying nearby: the old town itself. When the market closes in the evening, you walk back to your room instead of waiting for a bus.
