Christmas Markets in Germany 2026: Dates by City

Christmas markets in Germany start from 13 November in 2026: Cologne and Essen open first, and Dresden, the oldest, opens last on 25 November. We based ourselves in Düsseldorf and took the train to Cologne, Dortmund and Essen, then reached Dresden from Prague and Freiburg from Basel. Here is each city, in short.

When Do German Christmas Markets Open? 2026 Start Dates by City

German Christmas markets (Weihnachtsmärkte) do not share one calendar, so when they are open changes by city. In the cities we walked, opening day falls between 13 and 25 November and most markets end between 23 and 30 December.

The linked cities have their hours on their own guides, and the most searched Nuremberg, Munich, Frankfurt and Berlin Christmas market dates follow them.

Any of these dates can move, so open the city card's official page before you book.

Best German Christmas Markets: Which One to Pick

We can only rank what we walked, and our pick of the best Christmas markets in Germany is Dresden: on our wider European trip the Striezelmarkt came first. Good German Christmas markets are in almost every town, so the real question is what you want from yours.

  • The most traditional German Christmas market: Dresden, running since 1434.
  • A market under a famous landmark: Cologne, right beside the cathedral. Go after dark.
  • Several cities without changing hotel: stay in Düsseldorf; Cologne, Dortmund and Essen are a short train ride away.
  • A giant tree: Dortmund's Hansaplatz, from 23 November and around dusk.
  • An early trip in mid-November: Essen, or the harbour market in Cologne.
  • Between Christmas and New Year: Cologne's Heumarkt and harbour markets, Dresden's Neumarkt and Augustusmarkt, Düsseldorf and Dortmund until 30 December.
  • A small walkable city: Freiburg.
  • Size: Leipzig's tourism site counts about 300 stalls and Dortmund's official site over 250.

German Christmas Market Tours and Trips: Do You Need One?

We did every city on our own by train, so a trip to the Christmas markets in Germany does not need a tour. A guided tour of these markets earns the fee if you have only one evening in a city and want to go straight to the good stalls.

If you are weighing multi-city trips, coach holidays or a river cruise, our route page  shows how we linked the markets ourselves by rail.

Where to Stay for German Christmas Markets

We only slept in Düsseldorf: four nights at the Garner Hotel beside the main station, with a train to a different city each day. December weekends book up early. For every German city, see our guide on where to stay in Germany .

Getting to German Christmas Markets by Train and Plane

From Düsseldorf we used regional trains: Cologne takes about half an hour, Essen 22 minutes on the fastest train and Dortmund 45 minutes. The Deutschlandticket covered these regional trains, though not fast ICE services. Non-EU visitors should check our Germany visa guide .

German Christmas Markets Food: What to Eat, Drink and Buy

What to buy at the German Christmas markets we walked: handmade candles, wooden ornaments and local jam in Essen; wooden toys and wool scarves in Freiburg; Erzgebirge woodcraft and a box of Christstollen in Dresden.

Do you pay to enter German Christmas markets?

The markets in Cologne, Düsseldorf, Dortmund and Freiburg and Dresden's Striezelmarkt are free. Dresden's medieval market in the Stallhof charges on Advent weekends, and Berlin's Gendarmenmarkt charges at the gate.

Are German Christmas markets open after Christmas?

Some are. Düsseldorf and Dortmund run until 30 December, Berlin's Gendarmenmarkt until 31 December; Dresden's Neumarkt and Augustusmarkt and Cologne's harbour market until 3 January 2027; Cologne's Heumarkt until 10 January. Essen and Freiburg end on 23 December.

Why are markets closed on 22 November?

It is Totensonntag, a quiet day of remembrance for the dead. The Cologne cathedral market, Düsseldorf, Dortmund, Essen and Freiburg all close. Dresden's markets have not opened yet by then.

How many days do you need?

We saw Düsseldorf, Cologne, Dortmund and Essen in four nights from one hotel. Dresden and Freiburg are far from that cluster, so treat each as its own trip.
