Where to Stay in Dortmund, Germany: Best Areas and Hotels

Where to stay in Dortmund comes down to why you are going. For the Christmas market or a short city break, pick the centre between the Hauptbahnhof and Westenhellweg, where most hotels in Dortmund are. Kreuzviertel suits anyone after a quieter, local street; Phoenix See in Hörde suits lakeside walkers; and the Westfalenhallen and stadium area suits match days, concerts and trade fairs.

To be clear about our own trip: we did not sleep in Dortmund. In November 2025 we took the morning train from our hotel in Düsseldorf, spent the day in Dortmund and went back at night, so there is a section below on whether that plan makes sense for you. Base in Düsseldorf or Stay in Dortmund? How to Decide

We came to Dortmund from Düsseldorf as a day trip by train, to see the Christmas markets and a bit of the city. Because the Hbf drops you right in the centre, a day trip works well here. Still, the ride is about twice as long as the one to Essen, so it is worth thinking it through. Watch in the video · 1:08

Stay in Dortmund if

  • you want time for the giant tree's light show and the market in the evening,
  • you are going to a match, a concert or a fair at the Westfalenhallen,
  • your other stops are Ruhr cities such as Essen and Bochum.

Base in Düsseldorf if

  • Cologne and Düsseldorf are on the plan as well and Dortmund gets one day,
  • you fly into Düsseldorf and want the same bed every night.

Dortmund to Cologne is also a straight train ride, but an hour each way every day adds up; with two or more Dortmund days, stay in Dortmund. See Düsseldorf to Dortmund train times  Ad Browse Düsseldorf hotels  Ad

Use this table to compare hotels in Dortmund, Germany by neighbourhood before you open a map of Dortmund Germany hotels. Times are approximate and measured from Dortmund Hauptbahnhof.

We do not list nightly rates: Borussia Dortmund home games, Westfalenhallen fairs and Christmas weekends move prices from one day to the next, so use the hotel link in the introduction for today's rates.

Shoppers on Westenhellweg, the pedestrian shopping street in central Dortmund

City Centre and the Hauptbahnhof (Westenhellweg)

Best for: arriving by train, walking the Christmas market at night and shopping. Westenhellweg is Dortmund's busiest shopping street, and in December the market stalls run between it, the Alter Markt and Hansaplatz.

For Dortmund hotels in the city centre this is the walking loop to search. One example is the Hotel Esplanade Dortmund, which its own website places at Burgwall 3, about 11 minutes on foot from the station and 7 minutes from Westenhellweg.

Best for: Newcomers, rail arrivals, market evenings and shops

Getting around: Dortmund Hbf; Westenhellweg on foot

To the Christmas market: You are in it

Nearby sights: the German Football Museum, the Dortmunder U, St Reinold's Church, the Alter Markt; each one is covered in our Dortmund sightseeing guide

Christmas market: 10 squares in the centre; the giant tree is on Hansaplatz

When we reached Westenhellweg, Halil recommended it as the street for shopping. Watch in the video · 3:51

Kreuzviertel (Southwest of the Centre)

Best for: a residential street instead of the shopping district. Kreuzviertel is where many Dortmund locals live, with older apartment blocks, corner cafes and Westpark, and it sits between the centre and the stadium. Hotels are scarce here and apartments more common. It also works for football fans who want a quiet street after the match.

Best for: Neighbourhood cafes, quiet streets, close to the stadium side

Getting around: U-Bahn or a walk into the centre

To the Christmas market: A short U-Bahn ride

Close by: Westpark; the stadium and Westfalenhallen side of town

Christmas market: a short U-Bahn ride into the centre

We did not film here; we added it as the calm option just outside the centre.

Phoenix See lake in Dortmund-Hörde with new homes along the shore

Phoenix See and Hörde (Southeast)

Best for: a morning walk by the water, if you do not mind the trip into town at night. Phoenix See is a man-made lake dug where one of Dortmund's largest steelworks used to be, now ringed by new homes, cafes and restaurants. Hörde has only a handful of hotels, and you reach the centre by public transport.

Best for: Walking and cycling round the lake

Getting around: Public transport from Hörde

To the Christmas market: The longest ride back

Nearby sights: the walking and cycling path around Phoenix See

Christmas market: the furthest of the four areas; plan your ride back

Halil describes walking and cycling round the lake, with cafes along the edge to sit at. Watch in the video · 6:20

Westfalenhallen and the Stadium (South)

Best for: a Borussia Dortmund match, a concert in the Westfalenhalle or a show at Messe Westfalenhallen. The stadium, the exhibition halls and Westfalenpark are side by side.

The Radisson Blu Dortmund sits in the middle of the three; Radisson's page gives its address as An der Buschmühle 1. On match and fair days rooms here go fast, while on other evenings the area is quiet.

Best for: Matches, concerts, fairs; Westfalenpark

Getting around: A few U-Bahn stops from the centre

To the Christmas market: U-Bahn into the centre

Nearby sights: Westfalenpark and the Florianturm, which has a lift to the top; in the video Halil shows Dortmund from up there Watch in the video · 7:02

Where to Stay in Dortmund for the Christmas Market and Match Days: How to Choose

The Dortmund Christmas market covers most of the city centre: get off at the Hbf, walk along Westenhellweg and you are already among the stalls. That makes the centre the easy pick for December. The other calendar to keep an eye on belongs to the stadium and the Westfalenhallen.

City centre and the Hauptbahnhof

the tree on Hansaplatz

One of Europe's largest Christmas trees goes up on Hansaplatz, and the official site lists short light shows every day from 17:00. On the day we visited, the tree lights were not on yet; when we asked, we were told they would be switched on a few days later. Keep that in mind for an early-season trip. Watch in the video · 8:42

Kreuzviertel

a quiet street after the market

Suits travellers who like a market evening followed by a silent street to sleep on. It is a few U-Bahn stops away; on Fridays and Saturdays the market stays open until 22:00, so plan your ride back.

Westfalenhallen and the stadium

check fair and fixture dates

HEATEXPO runs on 24 to 26 November and GERMAN FILM & COMIC CON on 5 and 6 December, both inside the first weeks of the market. Weekends with a Borussia Dortmund home game fill this side of town too.

Phoenix See

far from the market

The lakeshore is peaceful in December; if you want the market every evening, choose the centre instead.

Our nights were all in Düsseldorf, not Dortmund. We spent four nights here from 20 to 24 November 2025; on the Dortmund day we caught a morning train from Düsseldorf Hbf and rode the same line back in the evening. Essen and Cologne were day trips from here too.

What Halil noticed

  • Arrival: out of Dortmund Hbf you are in the middle of town, with the German Football Museum next door to the station.
  • The day: the centre is small, and the markets and shopping streets sit close together, so one day gave us a good feel for the city.
  • At the market: the giant tree had not been lit yet; we had the fire-grilled salmon in a bun with sauce and lettuce, which Halil had liked the day before as well.
  • Who it suits: anyone fitting Dortmund into one day and sleeping in Düsseldorf; allow about an hour each way.

What are the best hotels in Dortmund for the Christmas market?

The best hotels in Dortmund for the market are simply the ones in the centre. The market spreads across 10 squares with more than 250 stalls, and the giant tree stands on Hansaplatz.

In 2026 it runs from 19 November to 30 December: Monday to Thursday 11:00 to 21:00, Friday and Saturday 11:00 to 22:00, Sunday 12:00 to 21:00, closed on 22 November and 25 December (weihnachtsstadt-do.de, checked 16 October 2026). More in our Dortmund guide .

Where should I stay in Dortmund on a first visit?

In the city centre, between the main station and Westenhellweg. You step out of the Hbf straight into town: the German Football Museum is right beside the station, and the Dortmunder U, St Reinold's Church and the Alter Markt are a few minutes away on foot. Halil says in the video that the centre is compact enough to see on foot.

Should I stay in Dortmund or Düsseldorf?

Dortmund, if your trip is Dortmund alone or Dortmund plus Essen. Düsseldorf works if Cologne and Düsseldorf are on the list too, but the ride is longer than to Essen: direct trains from Düsseldorf Hbf take roughly 47 to 61 minutes to Dortmund Hbf (VRR timetable for Wednesday 25 November 2026, checked 30 October 2026). We chose Düsseldorf; the decision section below sets out both options.

Are there cheap hotels or hostels in Dortmund?

For cheap hotels in Dortmund, avoid Borussia Dortmund home weekends and big fair dates; that saves more than any choice of area. Hostels in Dortmund show up in the same search: if you want a dorm bed, use the hostel filter in the hotel search linked in the introduction, then check how far the bed is from the Hbf.

Is it easy to find a hotel on a match or fair day?

Only if you book early. The stadium and the Westfalenhallen share one district, and that is the part of town that fills first.

The Westfalenhallen calendar lists HEATEXPO on 24 to 26 November 2026, GERMAN FILM & COMIC CON on 5 and 6 December 2026 and JAGD & HUND on 2 to 7 February 2027 (westfalenhallen.de, checked 30 October 2026). On those dates, staying central and riding the U-Bahn is calmer.

Which airport is best for Dortmund?

Dortmund has its own airport, and Düsseldorf Airport is the bigger alternative: direct trains run from Düsseldorf Airport station to Dortmund Hbf in about 46 to 50 minutes (same VRR sample). Compare flights to Dortmund and Düsseldorf  Ad
