Street of arcaded buildings in Freiburg Altstadt

Where to Stay in Freiburg: Old Town, Station Area, Wiehre or Vauban

Where to stay in Freiburg, Germany, in short: for a first visit, the Altstadt around the Minster, where the Christmas market and almost every sight are a short walk away; with luggage or day trips planned, the streets between the main station and Colombipark; for quieter nights, Wiehre south of the Dreisam; and for an eco-minded stay, the Vauban district.

Below we compare hotels in Freiburg, Germany area by area, with the stops nearest each one and a list of example hotels. We did not stay overnight in Freiburg: we visited for the day in December and crossed to Basel that evening. For sights, see our things to do in Freiburg  guide. See Freiburg hotels and prices  Ad

Street of arcaded buildings in Freiburg Altstadt

Altstadt, Around the Minster (Old Town)

Best for: a first visit and the Christmas market. The medieval core around the Minster is compact and largely pedestrian; hotels here put you minutes from Münsterplatz, Martin's Gate and the Bächle lanes. The trade-off: in Advent it fills up first, and cars cannot always reach the door, so check parking and access before you book.

Best for: First-timers, walking everywhere

Getting there: Trams to Bertoldsbrunnen; the old town itself is pedestrian

Christmas market: On your doorstep

Nearby sights: the Minster and its tower, the Münstermarkt, Rathausplatz and Martinstor; our things to do in Freiburg  guide covers each one

Food: the Markthalle food hall and flammkuchen near Rathausplatz

Christmas market: Rathausplatz, Kartoffelmarkt, Unterlindenplatz and Franziskanerstraße are all in this area

Main Station and Colombipark

Best for: arriving with luggage and planning day trips. Freiburg Hbf has trains to Basel, Frankfurt and the Black Forest, and the airport coach stops at the bus station next door.

Colombipark, between the station and the old town, is one of the Christmas market sites and home to the 5-star Colombi Hotel. The streets right by the tracks are busy with buses and taxis in the evening, without the old town's lit-up lanes.

Best for: Arriving with luggage, day trips by train

Getting there: Freiburg Hbf; the airport coach stops at the bus station next to it

Christmas market: Colombipark and Rotteckring sites close by

Nearby: Colombipark, Rotteckring and the walk into the Altstadt

Transport: Freiburg Hbf, the bus station and trams from the station into town

Christmas market: the Colombipark and Rotteckring sites

Station-area hotels show on the map behind the Freiburg-wide link at the top of the page.

Wiehre, South of the Dreisam

Best for: quiet nights and longer stays. Wiehre is a residential district of old villas and tree-lined streets just across the river Dreisam from the old town. It has its own station, Freiburg-Wiehre, on the line up the Höllental valley, which helps for Black Forest trips. Hotel choice is small; many visitors who like Wiehre pick a guesthouse or apartment.

Best for: Quiet nights, longer stays

Getting there: Freiburg-Wiehre station and trams; a walk across the Dreisam to the old town

Christmas market: A short walk north

Nearby: the Dreisam riverside path and the walk up to Schlossberg

Transport: Freiburg-Wiehre station and trams into the centre

Wiehre is not in our video; it is here for readers who would rather sleep away from the market crowds.

Vauban, the Eco District

Best for: travellers curious about Freiburg's sustainable city side, and conference guests. Around 5,500 residents live in Vauban, where cars are kept out of most streets; the district went up on old barracks land to low-energy building rules (freiburg.de).

The Green City Hotel Vauban is here. It is about 3.5 km south of the centre, so you will ride the tram into town every day.

Best for: Eco-minded travellers, conferences

Getting there: Tram or bus to Paula-Modersohn-Platz, about 3.5 km south of the centre

Christmas market: Tram into town

Nearby: passive and plus-energy housing, quiet green streets

Transport: Paula-Modersohn-Platz stop

Not in our video; we list it for its eco credentials, not because we stayed there.

Apartments, Guesthouses and Hostels in Freiburg

Freiburg is a university city, so apartments and small guesthouses are easy to find outside term-time peaks; in Advent they go as fast as the hotels.

A Freiburg flat that looks cheap per night can end up dearer than a hotel once the cleaning fee is added, so line up the final totals.

Which Option Suits Whom

  • Apartment: three nights or more, families, or if you want a kitchen. Check the floor and lift if you have heavy bags; many old town buildings have neither.
  • Guesthouse: small places may close reception in the evening; tell them your arrival time, especially if you come in on a late coach from the airport.
  • Hostel: the budget choice for solo travellers. Read whether the price is for a bunk in a shared room or a room of your own, and find the nearest Freiburg tram stop on the map.

Where to Stay in Freiburg for the Christmas Market

The Freiburg market is spread over nine sites in and around the old town, so there is no single best street. For 2026 it opens on 19 November and closes on 23 December; it is shut on 22 November (weihnachtsmarkt.freiburg.de). Market dates and hours are in our Freiburg guide .

We Didn't Stay in Freiburg

How Our Day Trip Worked

We flew into EuroAirport, took the French-side exit to our coach, and reached Freiburg after about 40 minutes. We spent the day on foot in the old town and left for Basel in the evening rain, so we have no Freiburg hotel to review.

  • Trip: December 2023, part of our Christmas markets tour from Basel
  • Arrival: EuroAirport, then about 40 minutes by tour coach
  • Time in Freiburg: one day, on foot
  • Night: we crossed to Basel the same evening

If you are also visiting Basel, you can do what we did: base yourself there and come to Freiburg for the day. Basel to Freiburg train times  Ad

Halil's Notes

  • One day is enough for the old town if you only want the sights; stay a night if you want the Christmas market lights without rushing.
  • Next time we would book in the Altstadt so the Black Forest cake hunt could start early.
  • Video: Watch in the video · 0:52  Arriving in Freiburg

First trip to Freiburg: which part of town should I book?

The Altstadt. The Minster, Münsterplatz, Martin's Gate and the market squares are a few minutes apart on foot, and you can drop back to the hotel between sights. If old town rooms are full, the streets around Colombipark sit between the main station and the old town.

Where should I stay in Freiburg for the Christmas market?

Anywhere in the Altstadt or by Colombipark. The 2026 stalls open on 19 November and stay until 23 December, spread across nine sites, from Rathausplatz to Colombipark (weihnachtsmarkt.freiburg.de). Book early for Advent weekends.

Are there cheap hotels in Freiburg?

The lower prices tend to be outside the old town: around the station, in Wiehre or further out. Guesthouses and hostels are another option; see the alternatives card below. We could not read reliable prices, so compare your own dates on Booking.

Should I stay in the Black Forest instead?

Only if the forest is the point of your trip. Black Forest hotels around Titisee or Schauinsland are quieter, but you depend on trains or a car to reach Freiburg's old town. For a city break with one or two forest trips, stay in Freiburg and ride out.

How do I get from EuroAirport to my hotel?

The Freiburger Reisedienst coach leaves the airport's French sector hourly and takes about 60 minutes to the bus station beside Freiburg Hbf (euroairport.com). Station-area hotels are then a short walk; for the old town, take a tram.
