Cologne
North Rhine-Westphalia- Getting there
- We came for the day by train from Düsseldorf, about half an hour away.

Things to do in Germany, from our own trip: in November 2025 we toured North Rhine-Westphalia for the Christmas markets, stayed in Düsseldorf and took the train to Cologne, Dortmund and Essen for the day. Germany is in the Schengen area, the currency is the euro and the capital is Berlin.
This Germany travel guide covers the city guides from our trip, a map of German cities, how to get there and around by train, the visa, the language and the time zone.
This map of German cities marks the six cities we visited: Cologne, Düsseldorf, Dortmund and Essen in the west, along the Rhine and in the Ruhr, Freiburg in the southwest at the edge of the Black Forest, and Dresden in the east on the Elbe. Tap a point to see how to get there and where to stay.

German clocks follow Central European Time, CET (UTC+1), in winter and switch to CEST (UTC+2) in summer; as across the EU, they change on the last Sunday of March and the last Sunday of October.
The whole country is in one time zone, so Cologne, Düsseldorf, Berlin and Munich always show the same time. For most of the year Germany is one hour ahead of London and six hours ahead of New York. We travelled in November, on winter time (CET).
Where is Germany? In Central Europe, with a coast on the North Sea and the Baltic Sea in the north and nine neighbours: Denmark, Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria, Switzerland, France, Luxembourg, Belgium and the Netherlands. The four cities we visited are in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany's western state, close to the Dutch and Belgian borders.
We came in November 2025 for the Christmas markets; we stayed in Düsseldorf and went to the other three cities on day trips by train. In late November and December the Christmas markets are among the best things to do in Germany, and hopping from one city's market to the next by regional train is one of the most fun things to do in Germany in winter. Each city's video and stops are in its own guide. For these western cities the closest airports are Düsseldorf (DUS) and Cologne Bonn (CGN); Frankfurt is Germany's largest hub, where many long haul flights land. We flew into Düsseldorf and took the train from the airport to the main station.
Regional trains link the cities. We bought the Deutschlandticket: a monthly subscription bought in an app on your phone, valid on all local and regional public transport in Germany; long distance trains such as ICE and IC are not included. In 2026 it costs €63 a month (source VRR, October 2026).
The capital of Germany is Berlin. Cologne, Düsseldorf, Dortmund and Essen are in the west of the country, in North Rhine-Westphalia; the capital of that state is Düsseldorf, the city where we stayed four nights. We did not go to Berlin on this trip.
A German visa is simply a Schengen visa, because Germany belongs to the Schengen area; short stays are capped at 90 days in any 180 day period. Whether you need a visa at all depends on your passport.
The general rules are on our Schengen visa page; the official list of who needs a visa, and where to apply, is on the Federal Foreign Office visa pages (last checked 30 Oct 2026).
The city sections come from our own trip in November 2025 and our videos; each city has the details in its own guide. Flight, train and Deutschlandticket information comes from the October 2026 check in our city guides; the visa link was last checked on 30 Oct 2026.
The Christmas markets. We went at the end of November and saw the markets in Cologne, Düsseldorf, Dortmund and Essen; the Deutschlandticket covered the regional trains between them.
We stayed in Düsseldorf and went to Cologne, Dortmund and Essen on day trips by train. If you would rather sleep in Cologne, the areas are compared in where to stay in Cologne .
Winter time is CET, one hour ahead of UTC (UTC+1), and summer time is CEST (UTC+2). The switch happens on the last Sunday in March and the last Sunday in October. The whole country, Cologne and Düsseldorf included, is in the same time zone.
The euro (€), in use since 2002; before that Germany used the Deutsche Mark.
Germany applies the Schengen limit for visitors: 90 days at most within any 180 days. Your nationality decides whether you need one; check our Schengen visa page and the Federal Foreign Office (last checked 30 Oct 2026).
Berlin. The cities we visited are in North Rhine-Westphalia, whose capital is Düsseldorf.
