The Dresden Striezelmarkt, its Christmas tree and the Altmarkt buildings seen from the Ferris wheel

Where to Stay in Dresden, Germany: Best Areas and Hotels

Where to stay in Dresden, Germany, in one line: the Altstadt (old town) if you want the Frauenkirche, the Zwinger and the Christmas markets on your doorstep; Neustadt across the Elbe for cafés, a local feel and the Augustusmarkt; the Hauptbahnhof area if you arrive by train or bus and leave early.

Picking a hotel in Dresden, Germany is mostly a question of which of these three you want. Below we compare hotels in Dresden, Germany by area and name five well-placed Dresden hotels, from the Hilton next to the Frauenkirche to a budget pick near the Zwinger.

We didn't stay overnight in Dresden: we came for the day from Prague by FlixBus, so these are location-based picks, not hotel reviews. The sights themselves are covered in our Dresden city guide , and market dates and hours in the Dresden Christmas market guide . See Dresden, Germany hotels and prices  Ad

Hotels in Dresden, Germany by Area: Old Town, Neustadt and the Station

4 areas

We couldn't read reliable December prices for Dresden, so this table compares the areas by location only. Each area card below links to live prices for your own dates.

Dresden Striezelmarkt: the lit Christmas tree and wooden stalls on Altmarkt square

Altstadt, the Old Town

Best for: a first visit, the Christmas markets and the museums. This is where most of what you came to see stands: the rebuilt Frauenkirche on Neumarkt, the Zwinger, the Semperoper and the Residenzschloss.

In Advent the Striezelmarkt on Altmarkt, the Neumarkt market and the medieval market in the Stallhof are all a few minutes apart. The trade-off: it is the busiest area in December and the first to sell out.

Best for: First visits, Christmas markets, museums

Getting there: Trams to Altmarkt, Postplatz or Pirnaischer Platz

To the Striezelmarkt: On foot, a few minutes

Nearby sights: the Frauenkirche, the Zwinger, the Fürstenzug and the Brühl Terrace; our things to do in Dresden  guide covers each one

Food: trdelník, Mandelstollen, beef sausage and raclette at the Striezelmarkt stalls

Christmas markets: the Striezelmarkt , Advent auf dem Neumarkt , the Stallhof

Neustadt, Across the Elbe

Best for: a stay of several nights, younger travellers and anyone who wants a neighbourhood rather than a museum quarter.

Inner Neustadt starts at the Golden Rider statue just over the Augustus Bridge, with the Baroque Hauptstraße; Outer Neustadt further north is the district of small cafés, independent shops and street art. You walk back over the bridge to the old town, or take the tram.

Best for: Longer stays, cafés and a neighbourhood feel

Getting there: Dresden-Neustadt station; trams over the Elbe bridges

To the Striezelmarkt: Across the Augustus Bridge on foot, or by tram

Christmas market: the Augustusmarkt  on Hauptstraße, open until 3 January 2027

We didn't explore Neustadt in the video; we added it for travellers staying longer than a day.

Around the Main Station (Hauptbahnhof)

Best for: one night on the way through, with a train to Prague, Berlin or Leipzig the next morning. Trains and long-distance buses both stop here; our FlixBus from Prague pulled up right outside.

Prager Straße, a wide pedestrian shopping street lined with hotels, leads straight to Altmarkt in 7 to 10 minutes on foot. The trade-off is atmosphere: the street is modern and has none of the old town's character.

Best for: Arriving by train or bus, moving on the next day

Getting there: Dresden Hauptbahnhof; long-distance buses stop outside

To the Striezelmarkt: 7 to 10 minutes on foot along Prager Straße

Getting around: trains to Prague and Berlin and buses from the forecourt

Christmas market: the walk to the Striezelmarkt  along Prager Straße

More about this area

Altstadt: the Striezelmarkt, Neumarkt and the Stallhof

Three markets within a few minutes of each other. The Hilton and the Steigenberger de Saxe stand right by the Neumarkt market, and the Taschenbergpalais is round the corner from the Stallhof.

Neustadt: the Augustusmarkt

The Augustusmarkt fills Hauptstraße from the Golden Rider to Gomondai-Platz and stays open over New Year (closed 24 to 26 December and 1 January). A good base if you are coming between Christmas and New Year.

Main station: one night, then on to Prague or Berlin

The Striezelmarkt is a 7 to 10 minute walk along Prager Straße, and the walk back at night is straight and well lit.

Book early for Advent weekends

The Stollenfest on Saturday 5 December is the busiest day at the Striezelmarkt; weekday nights are easier to find and usually cheaper. Book a room with free cancellation if you can.

Best Hotels in Dresden, Germany: Five Picks by Location, Including 5-Star

Five Dresden hotels chosen for where they stand. We haven't stayed in any of them, and we couldn't verify current guest scores or prices, so check the latest reviews before you book.

Hotel Hilton Dresden

Altstadt · An der Frauenkirche 5

For a room right next to the Frauenkirche: the Hilton Dresden sits on the edge of Neumarkt, so the Neumarkt market is outside the door and the Striezelmarkt a few minutes' walk away. A good choice if you want the old town and a big international chain.

Hotel Taschenbergpalais Kempinski

Altstadt · 5-star · Taschenberg 3

For a special night: a rebuilt Baroque palace opposite the Residenzschloss, between the Zwinger and the Semperoper. The Stallhof medieval market is just around the corner.

Steigenberger Hotel de Saxe

Altstadt · Neumarkt 9

For waking up on Neumarkt: the hotel faces the Frauenkirche across the square where Advent auf dem Neumarkt is set up.

Motel One Dresden am Zwinger

Altstadt · Postplatz 5

For a budget base in the old town: on Postplatz, by the Zwinger, with tram connections in every direction and a short walk to Altmarkt.

Pullman Dresden Newa

Hauptbahnhof · Prager Straße 2c

For arriving by train: at the station end of Prager Straße, so you can walk from the platform to the hotel and then on to the Striezelmarkt.

Where We Stayed

a Day Trip from Prague

BasePrague
TransportFlixBus from Prague's main bus station to Dresden Hauptbahnhof, about 2 hours
Time in Dresden5 to 6 hours

We didn't spend a night in Dresden. We were staying in Prague, took the bus over in the morning, spent the afternoon and evening at the Striezelmarkt and went back to Prague the same night; the next morning we left for Vienna. For the city itself, see our Prague travel guide .

Halil's Notes

  • The plan: our only goal that day was the Dresden Christmas market, one stop on a Prague, Dresden and Vienna Christmas route.
  • The bus: it took about 2 hours; once we saw snow along the road we knew we were in Germany.
  • Arrival: the bus stops at the main station, 7 to 10 minutes' walk from the old town.
  • Good for: anyone who only wants the Striezelmarkt. If you also want museums or the other markets, book a night.
  • Video: Watch in the video · 0:39  Our trip from Prague to Dresden

Trains from Prague take about 2 to 2.5 hours, so either works for a day trip.

Apartments, Hostels and Guesthouses

Besides hotels, Dresden has holiday apartments, guesthouses and hostels. An apartment makes sense for three nights or more, for families, or if you want a kitchen; a hostel works for a short budget stop.

Which Option Suits Whom

  • Apartment: read the listing for the bed layout, the number of guests and how keys are handed over; many have no reception.
  • Guesthouse: smaller places may close reception in the evening; if you will check in after the market, ask about late arrival before you book.
  • Hostel: mostly in Neustadt and near the station; compare dorm and private-room prices.

Germany's cities often add a local accommodation tax to the room rate; check whether the price you see includes it.

Should I stay in Dresden or do it as a day trip from Prague?

We did it as a day trip: about 2 hours each way by FlixBus, with 5 to 6 hours at the Striezelmarkt in between. That works if the market is your goal. Stay at least one night if you also want the museums, the Frauenkirche dome and the other markets.

First time in Dresden: which part of town makes the best base?

The Altstadt. The Frauenkirche, the Zwinger, the Semperoper, the Fürstenzug and the Brühl Terrace are all within a short walk, and so are three of the four big Christmas markets. If that is over budget, look at hotels on Prager Straße towards the main station: still central, and an easy walk into the old town.

Is there a Dresden city center, and where is it?

Locals mean the Altstadt on the south bank of the Elbe: Altmarkt, Neumarkt and the palace quarter. Hotels in the Dresden city center are in this area and along Prager Straße, which runs from the main station to Altmarkt.

Are there hostels in Dresden?

Yes, mostly in Neustadt and around the main station. Neustadt suits budget travellers who want a lively evening area; near the station suits a one-night stop. Check whether you are booking a dorm bed or a private room.

When should I book a Dresden hotel for Advent?

Months ahead if you are set on an Advent weekend, and earliest of all for the Stollenfest weekend. The Altstadt fills first; if it is full, Neustadt and the station area are both walkable to the markets. Market dates are in our Dresden Christmas market guide .
