Where to stay in Cologne, in short: the best area for a first visit is Altstadt-Nord, around the cathedral and the main station; to balance location and budget, the Neumarkt side (Altstadt-Süd); for a trade fair, a concert or if you come by car, Deutz across the Rhine.
All of these areas are in Innenstadt, the city's District 1; only Ehrenfeld is in District 4. Below we compare hotels in Cologne, Germany area by area, with December prices and 13 picks. We did not stay in Cologne; we stayed in Düsseldorf and came over by train for the day.
Hotels in Cologne by Area: Where to Stay Near the Cathedral, Old Town or Messe
6 areas · nightly rates
Prices per area are rough Booking ranges for one Tuesday night, 8 to 9 December 2026, 2 adults, checked on 15 October 2026; the link under each area card shows current prices for your dates.
Altstadt-Nord, the Cathedral and the Old Town (District 1)
Best for: a first visit, or arriving by train or from the airport. Step out of the main station and the cathedral is in front of you; the cathedral market and the two squares of Heinzels are within walking distance, which makes this the area for hotels close to Cologne Cathedral.
The trade-off is that at Christmas it is the busiest and most expensive area; on Booking it is listed as Altstadt-Nord, near the main station of Cologne, Germany.
Nightly rate: 100-€275
Best for: First-timers, arriving by train or from the airport
Getting there: Köln Hauptbahnhof; the S19 airport train and the Düsseldorf trains stop here
Nearby sights:Cologne Cathedral , the Heinzelmännchen fountain with its house gnomes, the colourful Old Town façades, the house where Eau de Cologne was born and the Rhine promenade; our things to do in Cologne guide walks through each one
Food: Reibekuchen potato fritters and raclette at the cathedral market
Altstadt-Süd, Neumarkt and Rudolfplatz (District 1)
Best for: balancing location and budget. This is Cologne's shopping centre; from Neumarkt you walk along Schildergasse to the cathedral, and the Rudolfplatz side sits on the Ring, a little further out.
Nightly rate: 90-€210
Best for: Balancing location and budget
Getting there: U 1, 3, 4, 7, 9, 16, 18 Neumarkt
Nearby sights: Schildergasse, the main shopping street of Cologne; the things to do in Cologne guide says more about it
Food: flame-grilled salmon at the Neumarkt market, Baumkuchen layered tree cake
Rheinauhafen and the Chocolate Museum (Altstadt-Süd, District 1)
Best for: quiet evenings and families with children. The old harbour, the Crane Houses and the Chocolate Museum are on this stretch of the river; the cathedral is 20 to 30 minutes on foot along the Rhine. Most hotels are in the streets behind the harbour; some have complaints about cold rooms in winter reviews, so read the December reviews.
Nightly rate: 130-€270
Best for: Quiet evenings, families with children
Getting there: Bus 133 to Schokoladenmuseum; 20 to 30 minutes on foot along the river to the cathedral
Nearby sights: the Kranhäuser (Crane Houses) and the Chocolate Museum (Schokoladenmuseum); the things to do in Cologne guide covers both stops by the harbour
Food: the seafood stalls at the harbour market; at the Chocolate Museum a member of staff lets you taste from the chocolate fountain on a wafer
Deutz and the Messe (District 1, right bank of the Rhine)
Best for: a trade fair, a concert at the LANXESS Arena or arriving by car. Hotels in this part of Cologne, Germany are the ones near Koelnmesse and the LANXESS Arena, and Köln Messe/Deutz station is on this bank too; according to guest reviews the cathedral is 15 to 20 minutes on foot over the Hohenzollern Bridge.
This is also the bank with the best view of the cathedral; the bridge is windy on the way back in the evening, so in December bring a hat and gloves.
Nightly rate: 70-€230
Best for: Trade fairs and concerts, travellers with a car
Getting there: Köln Messe/Deutz station; 15 to 20 minutes over the bridge to the cathedral
Nearby sights: the KölnTriangle viewing platform and the love locks on the Hohenzollern Bridge; for the Deutz bank, open the things to do in Cologne guide
Christmas market: none on this bank; you walk over the bridge to the cathedral market
Best for: a second visit, or staying on the less touristy side of the city. The Belgian Quarter (Belgisches Viertel) west of the centre, MediaPark to the north and Ehrenfeld a little further out show a more local Cologne, with cafes and small shops. You get to and from the cathedral side by public transport.
Nightly rate: 70-€200
Best for: Second visits, a more local feel
Getting there: Public transport to the cathedral side, about 2 to 4 km
Where to Stay in Cologne for the Christmas Markets
Most of Cologne's big Christmas markets cluster in the historic core, only a few minutes' stroll apart. The 2026 season starts on 13 November at the harbour and in Stadtgarten; the cathedral, Neumarkt and Rudolfplatz follow from 16 November to 23 December, while Heinzels on Heumarkt stays open until 10 January 2027 (official info, 28 October 2026).
To stroll back to your room once the stalls shut, base yourself in the area of the Cologne market you plan to visit most. Hours and closing days are in our Cologne Christmas market guide .
More about this area
Altstadt-Nord: the cathedral market and Heinzels on your doorstep
The cathedral market on Roncalliplatz and Heinzels Wintermärchen on Alter Markt and Heumarkt are in this area, a few minutes' walk apart. CityClass Hotel Alter Markt is right on the square where Heinzels is set up. On Totensonntag, 22 November, the cathedral market is closed, and Heinzels opens on 23 November.
Neumarkt and Rudolfplatz: Markt der Engel and Nikolausdorf
The Angels' Market is on Neumarkt square and Nikolausdorf on Rudolfplatz, on the Ring; both close on 23 December. You walk along Schildergasse to the cathedral market.
Rheinauhafen: the harbour market, first to open in November
The market in front of the Chocolate Museum opens three days before the big ones, on 13 November; from 26 December to 3 January 2027 a New Year market takes its place. A good base if you are going after Christmas.
Deutz: the other side of the bridge
There is no big market on this bank; you walk over the Hohenzollern Bridge to the cathedral market. Booking showed 148 properties with rooms around Messe/Deutz for 8 to 9 December on 15 October, against 60 around the cathedral; if the centre is full, look here first.
Belgian Quarter: the Stadtgarten market
The Stadtgarten market opens its gates at 16:00 on weekdays; on Sunday 22 November it is closed until 18:00. If you stay in this area you can walk to this market in the evening and take public transport to the markets in the centre.
Book early for December
For the Saturday night of 12 to 13 December, about 71% of Cologne's accommodation was already taken when we looked on Booking on 15 October 2026; on Tuesday 8 to 9 December, 335 properties had rooms.
The same hotels looked about 35 to 45% cheaper for 12 to 13 January 2027 than for 8 to 9 December. If you can, book a room with free cancellation and choose a weeknight rather than a Saturday.

Getting to Cologneabout 30 minutes by train from Düsseldorf main station to Cologne main station
AddressGraf-Adolf-Straße 94, Düsseldorf
This is where we stayed: we did not stay in Cologne, but spent 4 nights at this hotel from 20 to 24 November 2025 and went to Cologne, Dortmund and Essen by train as day trips. For other German cities, see our Germany travel guide .
Halil's Notes
The plan: stay in Düsseldorf and visit Cologne as well as the Christmas markets of the cities around it.
Train: the trip to Cologne took about 30 minutes; we bought the ticket for €8 in an app we downloaded to the phone.
Arrival: with this ticket we got off at Cologne main station, right next to the cathedral; the cathedral was our first stop.
Good for: anyone who wants to see the Düsseldorf, Dortmund and Essen markets as well as Cologne. If you are staying late at the cathedral market, check your return train in advance.
Beyond hotels, Cologne has apartments, guesthouses and hostels; in trade fair and Christmas weeks they fill up early along with the hotels. An apartment makes sense if you are staying more than three nights or want a kitchen, and a hostel for a short trip on a budget.
Which Option Suits Whom
Apartment: the apartments on Booking and Cologne listings on Airbnb; also the widest choice for big families. Read the listing for the bed layout, how many people can stay and how the keys are handed over.
Guesthouse: at small places the reception may not be open at night; if you will check in late after an evening at the market, ask about the time in advance.
Hostel: solo and budget travellers. Check whether there are dorms or private rooms, and how far it is from the main station or the U-Bahn.
To see Cologne's hotels, apartments and guesthouses in one list:
Apartments can list a cleaning fee separately from the nightly price; compare options by the total price.
How early should I book a Cologne hotel for the Christmas markets?
As early as you can, especially for a weekend. Market dates are in our Cologne Christmas market guide . For Saturday 12 to 13 December, Booking showed only 206 properties with rooms. In Cologne, picking a weeknight over a weekend helps with both availability and price.
First time in Cologne: which area should I stay in?
Around the cathedral, the main station and the Old Town. Trains from the airport and from Düsseldorf arrive at the main station right next to the cathedral, and the cathedral market, the markets on Alter Markt and Heumarkt, the Heinzelmännchen Fountain and the Hohenzollern Bridge are all within walking distance.
If you want somewhere a little cheaper but still central, look at the Neumarkt side.
How much are hotels in Cologne?
It depends a lot on the date: for the Saturday night of 12 to 13 December hotels were €130 to €380, and for Tuesday 12 to 13 January 2027 €60 to €160 (Booking, 15 October 2026). Prices by area are in the cards above.
Should I stay in Cologne or Düsseldorf?
Cologne, if it is your only stop: that way the lit-up cathedral market is a short evening walk from your hotel. If you are visiting the Christmas markets of several cities, we based ourselves in Düsseldorf, and the train ride over to Cologne took roughly 30 minutes. Details are in the card for the hotel we stayed in below.
How do I get from Cologne Bonn Airport to my hotel?
The S19 suburban train and the RE6 regional train run from the airport to Cologne main station; the regional train takes 11 minutes. From the main station, cathedral-area and Old Town hotels are just a few minutes' walk.
If you are staying in Neumarkt, Rheinauhafen or the Belgian Quarter you continue by public transport from the main station, which is why hotels near the main station are easiest if you have luggage.
What should I check before booking a Cologne hotel?
Breakfast: it is not included everywhere; some reviewers mention paying separately for breakfast, €21 per person at one hotel. Parking: hotel car parks in the centre are paid; January 2026 and 2025 reviews mention €22 to €25 a day. Heating: in winter reviews some guests at some hotels say the room was cold at night; read December and January reviews before you choose. 24 and 25 December: the cathedral and Neumarkt markets close on 23 December, and the Heumarkt and harbour markets are closed on 24 and 25 December; if you are coming for the markets, choose your hotel dates with this in mind.
