Things to Do in Cologne, Germany 2026: 10 Stops, Food and Getting There

SchengenGermanyCity guide

Where is Cologne, Germany? In the west of the country, in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia on the Rhine; in German the city is Köln, and its landmark is the cathedral. The cathedral , the Hohenzollern Bridge and the Old Town are all within walking distance of each other. We came by train on a day trip from Düsseldorf while the Christmas markets were open. Below are the best things to do in Cologne from our video, 10 stops in all, plus the Christmas markets , what we ate, a daily budget and the best areas to stay.

three stops · on foot

The first 8 minutes of the video. On a map of Cologne all three are a few steps from the main station; the ten stops in this guide are on both banks of the Rhine, and you can walk between them all.

Walk out of the main station and it is right in front of you: the Gothic cathedral, completed after 632 years, with towers over 157 metres tall, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996. We didn’t climb the tower; we looked at it from KölnTriangle on the opposite bank.

Since 1 July 2026 tourist entry requires a ticket. Ticket prices, opening hours, the tower, the stained glass and the cathedral’s legends are in our Cologne Cathedral guide .

The fountain of Cologne’s sweetest city legend. The story goes that little house gnomes once came out at night and finished the work of the baker, the carpenter and the tailor while everyone slept. The tailor’s wife wanted to know who was doing it, so she scattered peas on the stairs. The gnomes slipped on the peas, got angry and never came back to Cologne.

You can see the tailor’s wife on top of the fountain. It was completed in 1899 (koeln.de).

Locals call it the love lock bridge. Thousands of couples have written their names on padlocks and hung them here, turning the railings into a colourful wall. Trains rumble across, the cathedral rises on the other side; it is one of the most photogenic spots in Cologne. We even found a lock dating back to 2017.

In the video we said 40 tonnes of locks sounded like a lot; the city portal estimates 40 to 60 tonnes (koeln.de).

The best view of Cologne we found. We went up in the lift and paid €5 each; the price is still the same. From the terrace on the 29th floor of the 103.20-metre building you get a 360-degree view of the city, with the cathedral and the bridge straight ahead.

From May to September it is open Sunday-Thursday 11:00-20:00 and Friday-Saturday 11:00-22:00; under-12s go free. The terrace closes in storms (koeln.de, October 2026).

At the entrance there is a small tropical greenhouse where you see real cocoa trees. Then, behind glass, machines show the whole process from roasting the beans to pouring the chocolate into moulds.

The best part is the chocolate fountain: a member of staff dips a wafer into the flowing warm chocolate and hands it to you. Inside there is also a tasting machine where we pressed a button for chocolate, and the museum’s own shop at the exit.

An adult ticket is €17.50 on weekdays and €19 at weekends and on public holidays; under-6s go free. Last entry 17:00. Closed on 24 and 25 December; in November 2026 it is also closed on Mondays 2, 9 and 16 November (schokoladenmuseum.de, October 2026).

Three buildings shaped like an upside-down L, inspired by the old cargo cranes of the harbour; inside are flats and offices, and they stand almost 60 metres tall (koeln.de). We were told this is one of the most popular spots in Cologne; honestly, we didn’t quite see why.

The heart of the Old Town: narrow lanes, historic colourful houses and small squares opening onto the river. With its cafés and restaurants, this is where you see the city’s everyday life.

The square with the colourful houses on the riverfront is one of the most photographed places in Cologne; take a slow stroll and stop for a coffee.

Eau de Cologne: the fragrance named after the city

historic perfume shops in the Old Town

Walking around the Old Town we came across a historic fragrance shop. The word cologne comes from this city: in the 1700s a light, fresh scent called Eau de Cologne, literally water of Cologne, was made here, became a favourite across Europe, and the city’s name stuck to it.

The oldest producer still in business, Farina, was founded on 13 July 1709; the German Patent and Trade Mark Office describes it as probably the oldest perfume factory still operating (dpma.de).

How to Get to Cologne: Flights and Trains from Amsterdam, Paris and Frankfurt

By Air

Flights to Cologne, Germany land at Cologne Bonn Airport (CGN), Köln Bonn Flughafen in German, 12 km from the city centre. Frankfurt and Düsseldorf airports are the big hubs nearby if you are flying from further away; both have direct trains to Cologne.

The S19 suburban train runs from Cologne Bonn Airport to Cologne main station every 20 minutes and takes about 14 minutes (bahn.de). Walk out of the station and the cathedral is right in front of you. Compare flights to Cologne, Düsseldorf or Frankfurt  Ad

By Train

We came to Cologne on a day trip from Düsseldorf. The train took about half an hour; we bought an €8 ticket in the app on our phone and got off at Cologne main station (Köln Hauptbahnhof, Köln Hbf on signs), right next to the cathedral.

The fastest trains from Düsseldorf main station to Cologne main station take about 20 to 25 minutes. You can also fly into Düsseldorf Airport and come on from there. Düsseldorf to Cologne train times and fares  Ad

Amsterdam to Cologne by train: the two cities are 259 km apart, and the fastest train from Amsterdam to Cologne takes about 2 hours 40 minutes. Frankfurt to Cologne: about 1 hour 6 minutes by ICE, or 178 km by car. Check current times and fares with Deutsche Bahn (bahn.de) before you book. Amsterdam to Cologne train times  Ad

Paris to Cologne by train: direct Eurostar trains run between Paris Gare du Nord and Cologne main station in about 3 hours 20 minutes, around five a day (eurostar.com; check the operator for exact times). By road it is about 500 km. We didn’t use this route ourselves.

By Car

Central Cologne is easy on foot and by train; you don’t need a car in the city. A car is handy if you want to combine the Dortmund and Essen markets in the Ruhr on the same day or build your own route. See Cologne car rental prices  Ad

6 areas

Cologne's areas to stay are on both banks of the Rhine: on the left bank, Altstadt-Nord with the cathedral and the main station, the Neumarkt and Rudolfplatz side, Rheinauhafen by the Chocolate Museum, and a little further west the Belgian Quarter and Ehrenfeld; on the right bank, Deutz with the trade fair grounds.

We didn't stay in Cologne; we came by train from Düsseldorf. In December, rooms in the centre sell out first. See all hotels in Cologne  Ad

Is Cologne Expensive? Daily Budget 2026

On a Budget
40-€55

Return train from Düsseldorf, the free stops (the bridge, the Heinzelmännchen fountain, the Old Town, the Rhine riverside), the KölnTriangle terrace, two snacks at the market and one meal at an inexpensive restaurant.

Mid-Range
90-€120

Cathedral and tower tickets, the Chocolate Museum, KölnTriangle, an inexpensive lunch and a mid-range dinner. A classic day in Cologne falls in this range.

Luxury
150-€200

All the tickets plus a guided cathedral or Christmas market tour, a Rhine boat trip and two restaurant meals. Tours push the price up the most.

Prices are per person, for one day. Food included; accommodation and flights not included.

Admission prices are from official sites (koelner-dom.de, schokoladenmuseum.de, koeln.de); the train ticket and KölnTriangle are what we paid ourselves; restaurant costs are estimates. Tour prices vary, so the high range is approximate.

In Cologne the biggest costs are museum tickets and restaurant meals; the stops you walk to and the market stalls keep the budget down. The figures below are from official tariffs and our own tickets

Getting around: the centre is walkable, and you can walk from the cathedral over the bridge to Deutz. Airport and Düsseldorf trains are in the getting there section above.

Admissions and tours: each Cologne place card shows its own ticket price. The cathedral, the tower and the Chocolate Museum at the weekend come to €39 together; KölnTriangle is €5. Check current Cologne tour and ticket prices  Ad

Food: market stalls are the easiest way to snack.

Free: the Hohenzollern Bridge, the Heinzelmännchen fountain, the Old Town and its colourful houses, the Rhine riverside, the front of the Crane Houses, Schildergasse, strolling the Christmas markets, and entering the cathedral by the north door to pray (details on the cathedral card).

What to Eat in Cologne: Halve Hahn, Reibekuchen and Flame-Grilled Salmon

4 food stops

Cologne’s best-known dishes: Halve Hahn, rye bread with a thick slice of Gouda, mustard and onion (the name means half a chicken, but there is no chicken in it); Himmel un Ääd, mashed potato and apple sauce served with Flönz, a black pudding made from pork blood; and Reibekuchen, potato fritters eaten with apple sauce. At the Christmas markets, flame-grilled salmon, Baumkuchen and raclette stand out. What we tried: fried potato dumplings, flame-grilled salmon, Baumkuchen, raclette, sausages at the markets and a wafer from the Chocolate Museum’s fountain. Left for our next Cologne visit: Halve Hahn and Himmel un Ääd; we skipped Flammkuchen because we had already tried it in Alsace.

At a historic restaurant we ordered the fried potato dumplings the menu called famous: potato that seems boiled and then pan-fried, topped with red pepper, onion and spring onion. Nice, but not a dish that made us say wow. The restaurant is right in front of the Heinzelmännchen fountain.

We stopped when we saw salmon nailed to wooden boards cooking in front of the flames. Fresh crusty bread, smoky salmon, lettuce and a little sauce. I’m not usually a big fan of fish, but I really liked this one; it was delicious. The stall is at the Markt der Engel Christmas market , where you’ll also find the market’s 2026 dates and hours.

The batter goes in the oven 20 times

They spread batter over a rotating cylinder and put it in the oven; once it bakes a little, they dip it in batter again and back it goes. They told us they repeat this 20 times.

The result is a layered cake with cinnamon. We loved the taste; put it at the top of your list for the markets. Dates for the Neumarkt market are in our Cologne Christmas market guide .

Anyone who watches our vlogs knows how much we love raclette; we joined the queue the moment we saw it. They scrape the melted cheese onto bread and drizzle a garlic and herb oil over it, which adds a flavour of its own. It was good. The market’s hours and its Totensonntag closure are on our cathedral Christmas market card .

Things to Know Before You Go to Cologne

Before

Things to know before Cologne

four points

Cathedral crowds, the winter cold and the visa come first. For Cologne’s Christmas market dates, see the Christmas section further down. Cologne Carnival opens every year on 11 November at 11:11, but the big crowds come in Carnival week in February or March. Cologne Central Mosque is in the Ehrenfeld district, about 3 km west of the cathedral. If you are looking for an outlet, there is no big one in the city; the nearest is Bad Münstereifel City Outlet, about 55 km south. For what to do around Cologne, add Bonn and the UNESCO palaces in Brühl; both are under half an hour by train.

Calmer on weekday daytimes

At the cathedral market in the evening we queued for a long time just to buy something. At busy times carry your bag in front and don’t keep your wallet in a back pocket. For a more relaxed visit go on a weekday during the day, then come back for a second round in the evening to see the lights. Dates and hours are in the Christmas section below.

Do you need a visa for Cologne?

Germany is in the Schengen area

SchengenGerman

Cologne follows the Schengen rules, since Germany is a Schengen country. Our Schengen visa guide  lists which passports need one and walks through the application; planning Cologne at Christmas?

Book the appointment early, since slots can take a while. German is the official language, but at Cologne’s main sights English is widely spoken. A few handy words for your Cologne trip are in our German phrases for travel .
