Where to stay in Düsseldorf comes down to five areas: the Altstadt (old town) for a first visit and the Christmas markets, Königsallee for shopping and luxury hotels, the main station (Hauptbahnhof) for day trips by train to Cologne or Essen, MedienHafen for a quiet modern evening by the Rhine, and the Messe side for trade fairs and early flights. We spent four nights by the station in November 2025. See Düsseldorf hotels and prices Ad
The best areas to stay in Düsseldorf
5 areas
A side-by-side view of the five areas. We left prices out: the gap between areas swings with the date and with the trade fair calendar, so check the live rates through the link above.
Altstadt
Düsseldorf Old Town Hotels by the Marktplatz and the Rhine
Best for: first-timers on a short break who want to stroll home once the market lights go off. Bombing in the Second World War levelled the old town; it was rebuilt on its medieval street plan rather than with towers, so the lanes still follow the old layout.
The town hall, the Jan Wellem statue, the Schlossturm and the Rhine promenade are minutes apart. The trade-off: this is the busiest and loudest part of town in the evening, and hotels in Düsseldorf old town are fewer and smaller than near the station.
Best for: First visit; walking back from the markets at night
Nearest stop: U-Bahn Heinrich-Heine-Allee
To the Christmas markets: On your doorstep
Nearby: Marktplatz and the town hall, the Schlossturm, the Rhine promenade, the Rheinturm along the river
Best for: shopping, a stroll by the canal and a special hotel. Locals shorten Königsallee to the Kö: a long boulevard with a canal down the middle, chestnut trees on both banks and luxury shops along it.
The best-known luxury hotels in Düsseldorf stand here, Steigenberger Icon Parkhotel and Breidenbacher Hof among them. East of the Kö, Immermannstraße is the heart of Little Tokyo; west of it, between the Kö and the old town, Carlstadt has the Carlsplatz food market.
Search for a city hotel in Düsseldorf, or for hotels in the Düsseldorf city centre, and this is mostly where you will land; a hotel in Düsseldorf's Stadtmitte puts the Kö and the old town on foot.
Best for: day trips to Cologne, Essen and Dortmund, and arriving from the airport on the S11. This is where we stayed.
South and west of the station, Graf-Adolf-Straße and Harkortstraße are lined with chain hotels, which makes this the easiest area for cheap hotels in Düsseldorf: Premier Inn Düsseldorf City Friedrichstadt, Hampton by Hilton Düsseldorf City Centre, Mercure Hotel Düsseldorf City Center and Stage 47 are all here. The walk to the old town is long-ish, so we rode the U-Bahn for evening markets.
Best for: Day trips by train, budget chains
Nearest stop: Düsseldorf Hauptbahnhof
To the Christmas markets: Three U-Bahn stops to Heinrich-Heine-Allee
Getting around: trains to Cologne, Essen, Dortmund and Amsterdam from the Hauptbahnhof; three U-Bahn stops to the old town
Nearby: Little Tokyo on Immermannstraße, the south end of the Kö
Hotels: Garner Hotel Düsseldorf Main Station, Premier Inn, Hampton by Hilton, Mercure City Center, Stage 47, NH Düsseldorf Königsallee
Best for: modern architecture and a calm evening. The old port now holds offices, restaurants and Frank Gehry's three twisted buildings, with the Rheinturm next door.
Hyatt Regency Düsseldorf sits at the tip of the harbour on Speditionstraße. The old town and the Burgplatz market are a walk north along the Rhine; on a December night that riverside path is windy and cold.
Best for: Modern architecture, quiet evenings by the Rhine
Nearest stop: Tram and bus; the Rheinturm is a walk away
To the Christmas markets: Along the Rhine on foot to Burgplatz
Nearby: the Gehry buildings (Neuer Zollhof), the Rheinturm observation deck, the Rhine promenade
Best for: a trade fair at Messe Düsseldorf or a dawn flight; these are the hotels near Messe Düsseldorf and the airport. Maritim Hotel Düsseldorf is on the airport grounds, linked by footbridge to the SkyTrain; the hotel puts the fairground 4.5 km away.
Hilton Düsseldorf is in Golzheim on Georg-Glock-Straße, between the centre and the Messe. Both are far from the sights; we would not pick them for a Christmas market trip.
Best for: Trade fairs, early flights
Nearest stop: U78, U79, U80 Messe stops; SkyTrain
To the Christmas markets: U-Bahn or train into the centre
Getting there: U78 to the north entrance (Merkur Spiel-Arena/Messe Nord); U78, U79 and U80 to the east entrance (Messe Ost/Stockumer Kirchstraße); U80 starts at the main station
We did not film this area; it is here for fair visitors and early flyers.
Best Hotels in Düsseldorf: 14 Picks by Area, Including 5-Star
The Düsseldorf hotels people search for most, grouped by area with who each one suits. We did not stay at these; addresses come from the hotels' and chains' own websites, checked on 30 October 2026. For guest scores and today's rates, use the Düsseldorf hotels link at the top.
Steigenberger Icon Parkhotel
Stadtmitte · Königsallee 1a, north end of the Kö
The classic Kö address, still searched for as the Steigenberger Parkhotel Düsseldorf. The Hofgarten park and the old town are a short walk; the Kö Christmas market starts at the door.
Despite the name, it stands a few streets behind the southern Kö; the hotel says the Berliner Allee tram and U-Bahn stop is around the corner. A middle point between the Kö and the station.
For ramen and Japanese supermarkets on the doorstep. The hotel lists the Oststraße U-Bahn stop beside it and the station about five minutes away; it used to be the Hotel Nikko.
The pick among hotels in Düsseldorf airport for a first-wave departure: a footbridge from the SkyTrain's Terminal C stop leads in, per the hotel. U81 runs to the Messe on fair days.
Where to Stay for the Düsseldorf Christmas Markets: How to Choose an Area
The Christmas markets spread across the old town, the Rhine bank, Königsallee and Schadowstraße, all close enough to walk between.
The city's tourist board lists 2026 dates of 19 November to 30 December, open 11:00 to 20:00 Sunday to Thursday and 11:00 to 21:00 on Fridays and Saturdays (visitduesseldorf.de, checked 30 October 2026). Each market's hours and exact spot are listed in our Düsseldorf Christmas markets guide .
Altstadt
closest to Marktplatz and Burgplatz
The town hall market, Burgplatz with its Ferris wheel and the Rhine promenade are all here, so you are back at the hotel minutes after the stalls close. The price is noise: these lanes stay busy late.
Königsallee
the new winter village and Kö on Ice
In 2026 a winter village opens on the Kö for the first time, beside the Kö on Ice rink (visitduesseldorf.de). Steigenberger Icon Parkhotel and Breidenbacher Hof look straight onto it.
Main station
U-Bahn to the markets, trains to other cities
This was our base. We rode three U-Bahn stops to Heinrich-Heine-Allee for evening markets and walked to the platform for the next morning's train to Cologne or Dortmund.
Book early for December
Over the six market weeks, central hotels fill first on Fridays and Saturdays. A free-cancellation room on a weeknight is the easy way round it. To see the markets with a local guide:
Getting aroundthree U-Bahn stops to the old town; about half an hour by train to Cologne
AddressGraf-Adolf-Straße 94, Düsseldorf
This is where we stayed: four nights, 20 to 24 November 2025. We walked Düsseldorf by day and used the other days for train trips to Cologne, Essen and Dortmund. The other German cities we filmed are in our Germany travel guide .
Halil's Notes
Location: very close to the central station, which made it a good choice for seeing both Düsseldorf and the nearby cities.
Price: we found it quite reasonable.
From the airport: we took a train to the main station with a Deutschlandticket bought in an app. It covers city transport and regional trains, not high-speed ICE trains.
Good for: a Christmas trip that takes in several cities. If you only want the Düsseldorf markets, an old town hotel shortens the walk home.
The building used to be the Novum Hotel Madison. On Booking it scored 7.4 from 1,961 reviews on 16 October 2026, with 8.7 for location. Reviewers like the station on the doorstep and the breakfast; a few mention no air conditioning and patchy wifi. Which is the best area to stay in Düsseldorf for a first visit?
The Altstadt or Königsallee. The town hall, Burgplatz, the Rhine promenade and the Kö sit within walking distance of each other; we covered the whole city on foot and never needed a tram. If day trips by train are part of the plan, the streets around the main station work better.
How early should I book a hotel for the Düsseldorf Christmas markets?
Early, and Friday and Saturday nights in December go first. In 2026 the markets run from 19 November to 30 December and close on 22 November and 25 December (visitduesseldorf.de, checked 30 October 2026). A weeknight is easier to find and usually cheaper. Market by market details are in our Düsseldorf Christmas markets guide .
Is it better to stay in Düsseldorf or Cologne?
If you plan to see several cities, Düsseldorf made a good base for us: Cologne was about half an hour away by train, and Essen and Dortmund are on regional lines too. For a Cologne-only trip, read our where to stay in Cologne guide. Düsseldorf to Essen train times Ad
How do I get from Düsseldorf Airport to my hotel?
Below the terminal building sits a suburban rail platform; the S11 from there runs straight to the main station, as we show in our video. All other regional and long-distance trains stop at the airport's separate long-distance station, reached from the terminals by SkyTrain.
The airport says the SkyTrain is closed for maintenance from 2 to 7 November, with replacement buses (dus.com, checked 30 October 2026).
Are there good hotels in Düsseldorf airport?
Yes. Maritim Hotel Düsseldorf stands inside the airport grounds at Maritim-Platz 1; the hotel says a footbridge links it to the SkyTrain's Terminal C stop. It suits an early flight or a trade fair, less so a city break, since the old town is a train ride away.
Before booking a Düsseldorf hotel, what is worth checking?
Trade fairs: when a big fair is on at Messe Düsseldorf, rooms across the city fill up and prices jump; look at the fair calendar before fixing dates. Noise: old town streets stay busy late, so ask for a quiet room. Breakfast: not always included. Air conditioning: our room had none; fine in November, worth checking for summer.

Apartments, Guesthouses and Hostels in Düsseldorf
Besides hotels, Düsseldorf has rental apartments, small guesthouses and hostels, and in fair weeks and December weekends they sell out alongside the hotels.
Which One for You
Apartment: worth it from about four nights, or when the kids need a kitchen. Check the floor, the lift and how keys are handed over; old town buildings often have no lift.
Guesthouse: reception may not be staffed late. If you will come back from a market after dark, agree a check-in time first.
Hostel: solo travellers on a budget. One near the station or an U-Bahn stop makes evening returns simple.
